  • In the design of experiments for response surface analysis, sometimes it is of interest to estimate the difference of responses at two points. If differences at points close together are involved, the design that reliably estimates the slope of response surface is important. This idea was conceptualized by slope rotatability by Hader & Park (1978) and Park (1987). Until now, second order polynomial models were only studied for slope ratatability. In this paper, we will propose the necessary and sufficient conditions for slope rotatability over all directions for the thired order polynomial models in two, three and four independent variables. Also practical slope rotatable designs over all directions for two independent variables are suggested.

  • Our country is serious difference of precipitation seasonally and about 66% of yearly mean rainfall is happening in concentration rainfall form between September on June. It requires consideration because of a lot of natural disasters by this downpour are produced. Slope failure is happened by artificial factor of creation of slope according to the land development, fill slope etc. and natural factor of rainfall, topography, nature of soil, soil quality, rock floor. Usually, Direct factor of failure slope is downpour. In this study, the Slope about among 55 places happened failure by downpour investigated occurrence position, geological etc and executed and inquire into character of rainfall connected with failure slope. Among character of rainfall, executed analysis about Max. hourly rainfall and cumulative rainfall of place that failure slope is situated and grasped the geological character of failure slope. Through this, inquire to character of failure slope by rainfall and take advantage of basis study for Hazard map creation.

  • This paper studies a method to minimize the baseline wandering that make hard to extract R-wave in ECG. This method uses a difference signal between ECG and ascending slope tracing waves to minimize the baseline wandering. When the slope of ECG signal maintains the value or falls, the ascending slope tracing wave follows ECG signal directly, and this wave holds that value of ECG signal when the slope begins to rises in a certain time(=hold time). After this hold time, this wave traces ECG signal again. This method has been applied to MIT/BIH database to verify its efficacy and validity in practical applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the relationship between standing posture biomechanics and physical fitness in the elderly. Physical fitness variables and postural variables for 227 (140 women and 87 men) elderly individuals were tested. Physical fitness tests (Korean Institute of Sports Science, 2012) included 3m sit, walk, and return, grip test, 30 second chair sit and stand, sit and reach, figure 8 walks, and 2 minute stationary march. Postural biomechanics variables included resting calcaneal stance position (RCSP), shoulder slope, pelvic slope, knee flexion angle, leg length difference, thoracic angle, and upper body slope. In statistical analysis, multiple regression was conducted by using stepwise selection method via SAS (version 9.2). Analysis for both men and women revealed significant relationships between physical fitness and age, upper body slope, knee flexion angle, leg length difference. Pelvic and thoracic angle were only related to figure 8 walking and sit and reach in women, while RCSP and shoulder slope had no relationship with any physical fitness variables.

  • In order to develope a road landscape that is in harmony with landscaping purpose, degree of sight occupation by slopes at road sides was measured and physical elements composing the slope scenery were visually evaluated and the results are as follows : In analysis of sight occupation ratio by perspective method, gradient of the slopes influenced more on the sight occupation than height did and the driving lane occupied 2 to 3% more proportion of sight than the passing lane. When there is slope at one side of the road, difference in sight occupation between the lanes was increasing with deceased height and with increased gradient of the slopes. In visual analysis of the slope scenery, negative image was increasing with narrow road, increased height and gradient of the slopes. In visual analysis of the slope scenery, negative image was increasing with narrow road, increased height and gradient of the slopes. Particularly, the effect of gradient was critical on scenery. The effect of the slopes was negative at 60$^{\circ}$ or more but positive at 45$^{\circ}$or less gradient. This phenomenon was more conspicuous with wide 4 lane roads than wide 2 lane roads. Although direct comparison is difficult due to a great difference between Korea and U.S.A. in climate, land condition, road dimension, and public process of purchasing land, etc, it is desirable to treat road sides so that the scenery is in harmony with landscape around as well as emphasizing the regional characteristics, also giving friendly and comfortable image to drivers and nearby residents in addition to safety as can be seen in U.S.A.

  • Probability distribution of the sea surface slope is estimated using sun glitter images derived from visible radiometer on Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) and surface vector winds observed by spaceborne scatterometers. The brightness of the visible images is converted to the probability of wave surfaces which reflect the sunlight toward GMS in grids of 0.25 deg $\times$ 0.25 deg. Slope and azimuth angle required for the reflection of the sun's ray toward GMS are calculated for each grid from the geometry of GMS observation and location of the sun. The GMS images are then collocated with surface wind data observed by three scatterometers. Using the collocated data set of about 30 million points obtained in a period of 4 years from 1995 to 1999, probability distribution function of the surface slope is estimated as a function of wind speed and azimuth angle relative to the wind direction. Results are compared with those of Cox and Munk (1954a, b). Surface slope estimated by the present method shows narrower distribution and much less directivity relative to the wind direction than that reported by Cox and Munk. It is expected that their data were obtained under conditions of growing wind waves. In general, wind waves are not always developing, and slope distribution might differ from the results of Cox and Munk. Most of our data are obtained in the subtropical seas under clear-sky conditions. This difference of the conditions may be the reason for the difference of slope distribution.

  • The movement of soil along a slope during rainfall can cause serious economic damage and can jeopardize human life. Accordingly, predicting slope stability during rainfall is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Due to rainwater penetrating the soil, the negative pore water pressure will decrease, in turn causing a loss of shear strength in the soil and ultimately slope failure. More seriously, many constructions such as houses and transmission towers built in/on slopes are at risk when the slopes fail. In this study, the numerical simulation using 2D finite difference program, which can solve a fully coupled hydromechanical problems, was used to evaluate the effects of soil properties, rainfall conditions, and the location of a foundation on the slope instability and slope failure mechanisms during rainfall. A slope with a transmission tower located in Namyangju, South Korea was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the correlation between permeability and rainfall intensity had an important role in changing the pore water pressure via controlling the infiltrated rainwater. The foundation of the transmission tower was stable during rainfall because the slope failure was estimated to occur at the toe of the slope, and did not go through the foundation.

  • The influence of gas hydrate dissociation on submarine slope stability was studied in this paper. Gas hydrates are stable under high pressure and low temperature conditions. Once gas hydrate dissociates due to natural or human activities, it generates large amount of gas and water. During gas hydrate dissociation, a pore pressure between soil particles increases and results in the loss of an effective stress and degradation of soil stiffness. A pore pressures model was proposed to calculated excess pore pressures generated by gas hydrate dissociation at the Storegga Slide. A slope stability analysis for the Storegga Slide using a two dimensional finite difference method was carried out by considering excess pore pressures due to gas hydrate dissociation. Since the excess pore pressure calculated by the proposed method resulted in the considerable loss of stiffness and strength in slope, a submarine slope failure occurred at the Storegga slide was well simulated.

  • The concept of slope rotatability introduced by Hader and Park(1978) is available when we are interested in the difference of the responses. Since there can be constraints on the factor levels in mixture experiments, there arises a need for adaptation of the concept of slope rotatability and the measure to assess it. In this article, measures of slope rotatability in mixture experiments are proposed to quantify the amount of slope rotatability for a given design. Measures for a restricted region design as well as for an unrestricted region design are presented. Then, the designs having different optimalities are compared with respect to these measures by some examples.

  • In this study we calculate discharge by slope-area method using continuously observed water level data and analyse the results. This study is performed in the Dalcheon river reach of 960 m length including riffles and a pool, which is located downstream of the Goesan Dam. Three values of roughness coefficient are applied to discharge calculation, which are established using bed material size analysis. Another roughness coefficient value obtained from the river improvement plan is also used. Calculated discharges by slope-area method are compared with dam discharges. Relative difference from dam discharges appears to be largely affected by roughness values and a value of 0.042 or more seems most suitable for the entire study reach. Smaller roughness value is suitable to the reach which has gentler water surface slope than mean channel slope of the entire study reach, while a larger value to steeper reach. In case roughness value is set considering overall slope of the channel, it is desirable to select the entire calculation reach including both gentler and steeper sub-reaches. Since relative difference becomes nearly constant at over 500 cms, in case that verification of applied roughness is conducted with other directly measured discharge, accuracy of measurement by slope-area method for larger discharge may be improved.
