  • Objectives : Skin color deformation by cupping has been widely used as a diagnostic parameter in Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). Skin color deformation such as ecchymoses and purpura is induced by local vacuum in a suction cup. Since existing studies have relied on a visual diagnostic method, there is a need to use the quantitative measurement method. Methods : We conducted an analysis of cross-polarization photographic images to assess the changes in skin color deformation. The skin color variation was analyzed using $L^*a^*b^*$ space and the skin erythema index(E.I.). The meridian theory in TKM indicates that the condition of primary internal organs is closely related to the skin color deformation at special acupoints. Before conducting these studies, it is necessary to evaluate whether or not skin color deformation is influenced by muscle condition. Hence, we applied cupping at BL13, BL15, BL18, BL20 and BL23 at Bladder Meridian(BL) and measured blood lactate at every acupoint. Results : We confirmed the high system measurement accuracy, and observed the diverse skin color deformations. Moreover, we confirmed that the $L^*$, $a^*$ and E.I. had not changed after 40 minutes(p>0.05). The distribution of blood lactate levels at each part was observed differently. Blood lactate level and skin color deformation at each part was independent of each other. Conclusions : The negative pressure produced by the suction cup induces a reduction in the volumetric fraction of melanosomes and subsequent reduction in epidermal thickness. The relationship between variations of tissue and skin properties and skin color deformation degree must be investigated prior to considering the relationship between internal organ dysfunction and skin color deformation.

  • This paper presents an automatic facial feature point extraction algorithm in sequential color images. To extract facial region in the video sequence, a moving color detection technique is proposed that emphasize moving skin color region by applying motion detection algorithm on the skin-color transformed images. The threshold value for the pixel difference detection is also decided according to the transformed pixel value that represents the probability of the desired color information. Eye candidate regions are selected using both of the black/white color information inside the skin-color region and the valley information of the moving skin region detected using morphological operators. Eye region is finally decided by the geometrical relationship of the eyes and color histogram. To decide the exact feature points, the PCA(Principal Component Analysis) is used on each eye and mouth regions. Experimental results show that the feature points of eye and mouth can be obtained correctly irrespective of background, direction and size of face.

  • To assess the functional structure of prepro-melanin-concentrating hormone (pMCH), we isolated and cloned pMCH (of-pMCH) mRNA from the brain of the olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, and compared its amino acid sequence with those from other animals. In addition, to examine whether activation of the brain of-pMCH gene is influenced by background color, density, and feeding, we compared pMCH mRNA activities against different background colors (bright and dark) and at different densities (100% PCA and 200% PCA). To examine whether the pMCH gene is related with malpigmentation of blind-side skin and appetite, we compared pMCH gene expression between ordinary and hypermelanic flounders, and between feeding and fasting flounders. The of-pMCH cDNA was 405 bp in the open reading frame [ORF] and encoded a protein of 135 amino acids; MCH was 51 bp in length and encoded a protein of 17 amino acids. An obvious single band of the expected size was obtained from the brain and pituitary by RT-PCR. In addition, of-pMCH gene activity was significantly higher in the bright background only at low density (< 100% PCA) making the ocular skin of fish whitening, and in ordinary fish. However, the gene activity was significantly decreased in dark background, at high density (>200% PCA), and in hypermelano fish. These results suggest that skin whitening camouflage of the flounder is induced by high MCH gene activity, and the density disturbs the function of background color in the physiological color change. Moreover, our data suggest that a low level of MCH gene activity may be related to malpigmentation of the blind-side skin. In feeding, although pMCH gene activity was significantly increased by feeding in the white background, the pMCH gene activity in the dark background was not influenced by feeding, indicating that the MCH gene activity increased by feeding can be offset by dark background color, or is unaffected by appetite. In conclusion, this study showed that MCH gene expression is related to ocular-skin whitening camouflage and blind-skin hypermelanosis, and is influenced by background color and density.

  • The body color pattern in fish is a distinctive feature for species identification. The blass bloched rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus is a commercially important marine fish species, distributed in the central and southern parts of Korea and south Hokkaido of Japan. It has a morphological feature divided into four subspecies according to with or lacking distinct spots on the body surface, and to the location of markings on the body surface. However, the genetic basis of body color pattern of S. pachycephalus is still unknown. Thus we analyzed the transcriptome of S. pachycephalus skin samples using RNA-seq analysis to investigate functional genes related to body color patterns. The experimental skin samples were prepared by classified into 'Wild type' (lacking distinct spots and markings) and 'Color type' (with distinct spots and marking). Two skin sample transcriptomes were compared pairwise and the results revealed that were 164 differentially expressed unigenes in the skin samples of 'Wild type' and 'Color type'. Gene Ontology analysis of 164 differentially expressed unigenes showed that these genes were included in the functional group of molecular function (2 genes), biological process (46 genes), and cellular component (6 genes). There were several genes that body color type skin specific expression and the genes were CTL (Galactose-specific lectin nattectin), CUL1 (Cullin-1), CMAS (N-acylneuraminate cytidylyltransferase), NMRK2 (Nicotinamide riboside kinase 2), ALOXE3 (Hydroperoxide isomerase ALOXE3), SLC4A7 (sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 3). Our study is the first attempt to search for functional genes involved in the formation of body color patterns in S. pachycephalus. The differentially expressed unigenes obtained in this study can be used as candidate genes for functional gene study related to body coloration of fish.

  • The visual sensing of human hands plays an important part in many man-machine interaction/interface systems. Most existing visionbased hand detection techniques depend on the color cues of human skin. The RGB color image from a vision sensor is often transformed to another color space as a preprocessing of hand detection because the color space transformation is assumed to increase the detection accuracy. However, the actual effect of color space transformation has not been well investigated in literature. This paper discusses a comparative evaluation of the pixel classification performance of hand skin detection in four widely used color spaces; RGB, YIQ, HSV, and normalized rgb. The experimental results indicate that using the normalized red-green color values is the most reliable under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, individuals, and hand postures. The nonlinear classification of pixel colors by the use of a multilayer neural network is also proposed to improve the detection accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a color quantization method regarding facial image for mobile services. For facial images, skin colors are more emphasized. First, we extract skin-color mask in the image and divide the image into two regions. Next, we extract color pallette for two regions respectively. In the proposed method, the loss in the face region is minimized and it can be useful for mobile services considering facial images. From the 8-bit color quantization experiment, we show that the proposed method works well.

  • Accurately extracting skin color regions is very important in various areas such as face recognition and tracking, facial expression recognition, adult image identification, health-care, and so forth. In this paper, we evaluate the performances of several skin color detection algorithms in indoor environments by changing the distance between the camera and the object as well as the background colors of the object. The distance is from 60cm to 120cm and the background colors are white, black, orange, pink, and yellow, respectively. The algorithms that we use for the performance evaluation are Peer algorithm, NNYUV, NNHSV, LutYUV, and Kimset algorithm. The experimental results show that NNHSV, NNYUV and LutYUV algorithm are stable, but the other algorithms are somewhat sensitive to the changes of backgrounds. As a result, we expect that the comparative experimental results of this paper will be used very effectively when developing a new skin color extraction algorithm which are very robust to dynamic real environments.

  • For an effective pre-treatment process of a face input image, it is necessary to detect each of face components, calculate the face area, and estimate the rotary angle of the face. A proposed method of this study can estimate an robust result under such renditions as some different levels of illumination, variable fate sizes, fate rotation angels, and background color similar to skin color of the face. The first step of the proposed method detects the estimated face area that can be calculated by both adapted skin color Information of the band-wide HSV color coordinate converted from RGB coordinate, and skin color Information using histogram. Using the results of the former processes, we can detect a lip area within an estimated face area. After estimating a rotary angle slope of the lip area along the X axis, the method determines the face shape based on face information. After detecting eyes in face area by matching a partial template which is made with both eyes, we can estimate Y axis rotary angle by calculating the eye´s locations in three dimensional space in the reference of the face area. As a result of the experiment on various face images, the effectuality of proposed algorithm was verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a new hand gesture recognition scheme using hand poses captured from a web camera. The key idea of this scheme is to extract skin color from the background-subtracted image. To extract skin color, in the first phase, we subtract background by repeatedly comparing the stored initial frame with next frames. And then we eliminate noise using dynamic table. In the second phase, we exactly recognize hand gesture by extracting skin color from ${YC_b}{C_r}$ color region.
