  • This paper develops a four-unknown refined plate theory and the Galerkin method to investigate the size-dependent stability behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) under the thermal environment and the FGM having temperature-dependent material properties. In the current study two scale coefficients are considered to examine buckling behavior much accurately. Reuss micromechanical scheme is utilized to estimate the material properties of inhomogeneous nano-size plates. Governing differential equations, classical and non-classical boundary conditions are obtained by utilizing Hamiltonian principles. The results showed the high importance of considering temperature-dependent material properties for buckling analysis. Different influencing parametric on the buckling is studied which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

  • Stimulated by novel phenomena observed in molecular aggregates, recent developments in engineering fields of microscopic scales are creating tremendous opportunities for future nanotechnology-based applications. Investigation in the field involves sub-nanosecond or sub-micrometer interactions between extremely small systems, but researches, to date in these physical extremes have been quite limited. Here, we shed light on some of nanoscale phenomena using molecular dynamics simulation: visualization of various phenomena of nanoscales and exploration of size-dependent mechanical properties.

  • Calculating size-dependent mechanical properties of the nano-scale materials usually involves cumbersome numerical and theoretical works. In this paper, we aim to present a closed-form relation to calculate the length-dependent Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on nonlocal elasticity theory. In this regard, a single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is considered as a rod structure and the governing nonlocal equations are developed under uniaxial tensile load. The equations are solved using analytical methods and strain distribution, total displacement and the size-dependent equivalent Young's modulus are obtained. Further, the results are compared with the molecular dynamics results from the literature. The outcome indicates that the calculated relations are coincident with the molecular dynamics results.

  • A one dimensional time dependent acid rain model considering size distribution of aerosols and hydrometeors is developed to predict observed chemical and physical properties of precipitation. Temporal variations of anions and cations observed are predicted fairly well with acid rain model simulations. It is found that aerosol depletion rates are highly dependent on aerosol sizes under the assumption of Marshall - Palmer raindrop size distribution. Also, the aerosol depletion during the initial rain event largely influences on ion concentrations in rainwaters.

  • This paper briefly reviews various existing methods to account for the effect of particle size on mechanical properties of particulate metal matrix composites. A simple and easy method is to use a size-dependent constitutive equation for the matrix. The suggested method does not require the development of a new computational algorithm and is compatible with any standard finite element software. Finite element analyses have been carried out to show how the deformation behavior of a metal matrix composite changes as the particle size and volume fraction are varied.

  • Purpose of this study is to investigate the size-dependent mechanical properties in micron scale medium. Theories such as the couple stress theory and strain gradient theory explain that the deformation in the micron scale is dependent upon the size of the medium. Specimens of the cantilever type, bridge type and paddle type beam that have thickness of 900, 1000 and 1200 nm and width of 10, 20, 30 and $50{\mu}m$ were fabricated by the MEMS technique. We carried out the bending and torsion test to measure the mechanical properties such as the young's modulus, yield strength and torsional rigidity using the AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy).

  • This paper deals with the problem of determining the retailer's optimal price and order size under the condition of order-size-dependent delay in payments. It is assumed that the length of delay is a function of the retailer's total amount of purchase. The constant price elasticity demand function is adopted which is a decreasing function of retail price. Investigation of the properties of an optimal solution allows us to develop an algorithm whose validity is illustrated through an example problem.

  • In the present investigation, thermal buckling and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) Timoshenko nanobeams subjected to nonlinear thermal loading are carried out by presenting a Navier type solution. The thermal load is assumed to be nonlinear distribution through the thickness of FG nanobeam. Thermo-mechanical properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to vary smoothly and continuously throughout the thickness based on power-law model and the material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is exploited to describe the size dependency of nanobeam. Using Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion together with corresponding boundary conditions based on Timoshenko beam theory are obtained for the thermal buckling and vibration analysis of graded nanobeams including size effect. Moreover, in following a parametric study is accompanied to examine the effects of the several parameters such as nonlocal parameter, thermal effect, power law index and aspect ratio on the critical buckling temperatures and natural frequencies of the size-dependent FG nanobeams in detail. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FG nanobeams as compared some cases in the literature. Also, it is found that the small scale effects and nonlinear thermal loading have a significant effect on thermal stability and vibration characteristics of FG nanobeams.

  • $TiO_2$ pastes was synthesized to obtained of high efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells using size dependent co-polymer. SBM co-polymer binder is consist of styrene, n-butyl acrylate, and methacrylic acid (SBM) monodisperse co-polymer binder materials and this $TiO_2$ pastes were applied of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photoanodes were characterized by ATR-Fourier Transform spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and morphology was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The photoelectrochemical properties of the thin films and the performance of DSSCs were measured by photovoltaic-current density, AC impedance and monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE). DSSC based on the 100nm size co-polymer binder was obtained conversion efficiency of 8.1% under irradiation of AM 1.5(100 $mWcm^2$).

  • Effects of particle size, crystal structures and multilayer structures of $ATiO_3$, $ATa_2O_6$, $ANb_2O_6$, $AWO_4$, and $AMoO_4$ (A=Ni, Mg, Zn, Co) ceramic fillers on the dielectric properties of polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer matrices were investigated at microwave frequencies. The microwave dielectric properties of $ATiO_3$ (ilmenite), $ATa_2O_6$ (tri-rutile), $ANb_2O_6$ (columbite), AWO4 (wolframite), and AMoO4 (wolframite) ceramics were largely dependent on the structural characteristics of oxygen octahedra. The dielectric constant (K) of the composites was increased with the ceramic content. However, the dielectric loss (tan ${\delta}$) of the composites was affected by the type of ceramics and the crystallinity of polymers. For the composites with same amount of ceramics, the K was decreased and the tan ${\delta}$ was increased with the particle size of ceramics. Also, the dielectric properties of the composites were dependent on the multilayer structures with different arrangements. Several theoretical models have been employed to predict the effective dielectric properties of the composites. The frequency dependence of dielectric properties and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) of the composites were also discussed.
