Coercivity of Near Single Domain Size Nd2Fe14B-type Particles

  • The coercivity of near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles prepared by ball milling of HDDR-treated $Nd_{12.5}Fe_{80.6}B_{6.4}Ga_{0.3}Nb_{0.2}$ alloy was investigated. The feasibility of a surface nitrogenation for improving the coercivity stability of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles was also studied. The near single domain size $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles had a high coercivity of over 9 kOe. However, the coercivity radically deteriorated as the temperature increased in air (< 2 kOe at $200^{\circ}C$). This coercivity reduction was attributed to the soft magnetic phases, ${\alpha}$-Fe and $Fe_3B$, which formed on the surface of the fine particle due to oxidation. Surface nitrogenation of the fine particles significantly improved the stability of their coercivity. The improvement in coercivity stability was attributed to the formation of a thin nitrogenated layer on the surface of the fine $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$-type particles, which enhanced the anisotropy field and gave improved resistance to oxidation (dissociation).

Dependence of Phase Stability of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal on Dopants

  • The effect of aliovalent dopants, $ Nb_2O_5$ and MnO, on the phase stability of 12 mol% ceria partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) polycrystals was studied. Both dopants (MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$) significantly increased the stability of the tetragonal zirconia phase (Mb temperature lower than liquid nitrogen temperature). The enhancement of the stability of the tetragonal phase in Ce-TZP doped with 1 mol% of Mno(Ce-TZP/MnO) andCe-TZP doped with 1 mol% of $ Nb_2O_5$(Ce-TZP/$ Nb_2O_5$) were explained by the significant reduction of the driving force, -${\Delta}$Gchem, for the tetragonal-to-mono-clinic phase transformation caused by the addition of MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$. The enhanced stability of the tetragonal phase in the Ce-TZP and Al2O3 composite (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$) is believed to be caused by smaller grain size, moderate reduction in the chemical driving force and increase in the strain energy barrier to the transformation. Mechanical properties of the Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ with (i) the same grain size and (ii) the same Mb temperature were examined by measuring stress-strain behavior in 3 point bending. The Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite doped with 1.3w% MnO (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO), which had the same grain size as the Ce-TZP and De-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ showed more transformation plasticity than either the Ce-TZP or the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite. The Ce-TZP wihch had the same Mb temperature as that of the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO did not show any transformation plasticity.

A Study on the Shape and Size Effects on the Stability of Underground Openings (지하공동의 형상과 규모가 공동의 안정성에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • In this study, the analytic solutions and numerical methods were used to estimate the shape and size effects on the stability of underground openings. The stability of underground openings was evaluated by scrutinizing the effects of the rock mass quality, the state of in-situ stresses and the lateral earth pressure coefficient on the displacement, the stress concentration and the plastic region developed in the vicinity of the openings. The analytic solutions have shown that the stress concentration factor is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature of openings. Through parametric study on the various shapes and sizes of underground openings the characteristics of the controlling factors concerned with the stability were analyzed. Then, the study was extended to the horseshoe-shaped openings commonly used for under ground storage. Through the extended study the effects of the stress ratio and the height-towidth ratio of openings on the maximum displacement and plastic region developed around the openings were estimated. The results have shorn that the height-to-width ratio of domestic storage caverns can be increased economically without stability problem, as far as the lateral earth pressure coefficient is appropriate.

A Comparison of Emulsion Stability as Affected by Egg Yolk Ratio in Mayonnaise Preparation (마요네즈 제조시에 난황 사용량에 따른 유화 안정성의 비교)

  • Emulsion stability, viscosity, and oil particle size of mayonnaise, prepared at various egg yolk contents, were investigated. With increasing of the egg yolk ratio, emulsion stability became stronger, viscosity became higher, and oil particle size became smaller. Freezing stability of mayonnaise containing below 6.5% egg yolk was reduced significantly. Referring to vibration separation, it was observed that stability of mayonnaise containing 2% and 3.5% egg yolk was very low and containing over 5% egg yolk was stable relatively. Viscosity of mayonnaise, stored at $-10^{\circ}C$, was reduced significantly during first 24hrs. and then levelled off. Oil particle size of mayonnaise, stored at $-10^{\circ}C$, became larger with increasing the storage time and the tendency to change was apparent in the sample containing below 6.5% egg yolk.

  • Increasing the filler content of sheet improves the optical properties and printability of paper and provides an opportunity for saving production cost through fiber replacement with relatively low-priced filler. But increasing the filler content tends to decrease the strength of paper and filler retention. It also tends to deteriorate drainage on the paper machine. To overcome these problems, preflocculation technology of fillers may be employed. Many research efforts have been made on the properties of preflocculated filler, namely prefloc, whose size and size distribution were influenced by polymer type and shear level. But there is much to be investigated about the effect of the prefloc characteristics on the physical properties of paper. To evaluate the effect cationic polymers on the size and size distribution of preflocculated GCC and their shear stability, cationic PAM and cationic starch were used. The influence of the preflocculation on filler retention and its surface distribution, and the changes of physical and optical properties of handsheets affected by the characteristics of preflocs were examined. Filler distribution on sheet surface was also analyzed by EPMA. Results showed that cationic PAM formed large preflocs at low dosage. Cationic starch was required to add 15 times as much as cationic PAM to obtain the preflocs with similar size. But preflocs formed with cationic starch was superior in shear stability to those formed with cationic PAM. Filler preflocculation technology could provide an opportunity of increasing filler content significantly without loss in tensile strength. And increased filler contents could compensate brightness loss which often accompanies filler preflocculation. When excessively large preflocs were used, however, brightness loss rather than the improvement in tensile strength was predominant. Therefore it is of great importance to produce preflocs with proper size and shear stability for maximizing the improvement of physical properties of papers.

  • Liposome-amino acid conjugates were prepared using dipalmitolyphosphatidylcholine(DPPC) and hydrophobically modified asparagine. A microdialyzer was used to measure glucose diffusion. The glucose binding affinity of DPPC-ODA-asparagine liposomes higher than that of DPPC liposomes and distilled water. The size of DPPC-ODA-asparagine was approximately 75-150 nm. Cholesterol increased the stability of liposomes, and reduced the size of liposome particles.

Preparation of Porous Inorganic Materials by Foaming Slurry (슬러리 발포에 의한 연속성 무기질 다공체의 제조)

  • Foaming method is presented the preparation of porous materials from high-concentrated kaolin silica and flyash slurries. The slurries were foamed dried and sintered respectively. The porosity of sintered ma-terials was about 70-75% Mean pore-size was the range of 70-150$\mu\textrm{m}$ and pore structure was continuous Sodium lauryl sulfate anionic surfactant was used as a foaming agent. The foaming ability and the froth sta-bility were increased with increasing the concentration of the foaming agent. But the size of the constituent bubble of froth after foaming process was not affected by the concentration of the foaming agent. These results showed that the mean pore-size of sintered materials was closely related to the froth stability which is related to the change of bubble-size during the drying process.

  • In this paper, the effect of grain refinement on room temperature ductility of copper was addressed. Recent experimental results have shown that this material, as well as a number of other single-phase metals that are ductile when coarse-grained, loose their ductility with decreasing grain size in the sub micrometer range. A recently developed model in which such materials are considered as effectively two-phase ones (with the grain boundaries treated as a linearly viscous second phase) was applied to analyze stability of Cu against ductile necking. As a basis, Hart's stability analysis that accounts for strain rate sensitivity effects was used. The results confirm the observed trend for reduction of ductility with decreasing grain size. The model can be applied to predicting the grain size dependence of ductility of other metallic materials as well.

  • Increase in power consumption can cause a serious stability problem of an electric power system without construction of new power plants or transmission lines. Also, it can generate large power loss of the system. In costly and environmentally effective manner to avoid constructing the new infrastructures such as power plants and transmission lines, etc, the distributed generation(DG) has paid great attentions so far as a solution for the above problem. Selection of optimal location and size of the DG is the necessary process to maintain the stability and reliability of existing system effectively. However, the systematic and cardinal rule for this issue is still open question. In this paper, the method to determine optimal location of the DG is proposed by considering power loss when the DG is connected to an electric power grid. Also, optimal size of not only the corresponding single DG but also the multi-DGs is determined with the proposed systematic approach. The IEEE benchmark 30-bus test system is analyzed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Stability of the Oil-in-water Type Triacylglycerol Emulsions

  • Lipid emulsions with saturated triacylglycerols (TAGs) with 4 to 10 carbons in each acyl chain were prepared to study how the oil component alters the stability of the lipid emul-sions when phosphatidylcholines were used as emulsifiers. The average droplet size of the emul-sions became smaller as the chain length of the TAG increased. For a given oil emulsion with smaller droplets was formed with an emulsifier having higher HLB value. The influence of HLB values on the droplet size was biggest for the tributyrin (C4) emulsion. For the tricaprylin(C8) emulsions, droplet size was identical at given emulsifier concentrations regardless of HLB values. The HLB value and the concentration of the emulsifiers also affect the droplet size of the emul-sions. The emulsions with smaller average droplet size were more stable than with bigger size for 20 days. The oil and water (o/w) interfacial tension in inversely proportional to the initial droplet size of the emulsion.
