  • This paper presents a six sigma application case study for an automobile PCSV manufacturing process using rolled throughput yield improvement activity. Hidden factor and first yield concept is introduced and DMAIC procedure is implemented to maximize the first pass yield. The result of the six sigma project amounts to the reduction of failure cost of 0.1 billion won per year in the PCSV manufacturing process. This paper can benefit six sigma practitioners in some ways.

  • This is an R&D project on design optimization of the inner shield of the Omega color picture tube at Samsung SDI in Korea. This was an R&D project which basically used the IDOV (Identify, Design, Optimize, Validate) process for Six Sigma implementation. Most Six Sgima projects use the process of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). However, this project introduces a new cycle, RDIDOV (Recognize, Define, and IDOV). Here CPT means Color Picture Tube. Sam sung SDI is one of the two companies which began Six Sigma in Korea. This case study shows a good example how an R&D Six Sigma project can be usefully employed in manufacturing companies using a new process cycle.

  • Many companies in Korea have introduced and put Six Sigma to the practical use recently, others are under consideration to introduce it. As we consider how to recognize and to apply it, we are able to know there is a difference among companies and it differently influence on those companies. In this paper, we analyze the structural differences between Quality Management and Six Sigma movements through the questiionnaire designed effectively to investigate them. We also examine the controversial points, suitability as the management model, the level of Quality Management and Six Sigma movements, and analyze how much the movements effect on the management activities. Finally, we show how to improve the Quality Management and Six Sigma movements in Korean companies.

  • Companies adopted a program called Six Sigma, in order to make fundamental changes in the way the company operated to fulfill customers' expectations. Six Sigma reduces the occurrence of defects. This approach derives the overall process of selection the right projects based on their potential to improve performance metrics and selection and training the right people to get the business results. However, in the course of Six Sigma process steps, companies are in the face of problems. This study is to solve the problems using TP(Thinking Process) of TOC(Theory of Constraints). TOC is methodology for solving key problem in system which is called Constraints. Nowadays, its application is going to be wide and its concept is being implemented. In this paper, it is showed possibility of application TOC to Six Sigma.

  • In 1999, Six Sigma was introduced into Korea and after that it had general influence on company-wide management system. Quality Circles apply the various quality problem solving techniques such as QC 7 Tool, New QC 7 Tool, and statistical methods to rationalization, improvement in the shop floor. This paper empirically investigates the effects of Six Sigma on Quality Circles by analyzing the difference of problem solving technique's use. The number of teams employed in this study is 342, which participate in National Quality Circles Contest from 1997 to 2002 in Korea.

  • Currently the problem of how to effectively integrate between six sigma and quality control circle is a matter of concern in the korea's manufacturing companies. In this paper we try to find the reasonable organizational alternatives and problem solving procedure by related literature surveying and empirical study. And we ascertain whether it is significant by conducting a survey on 51 six sigma consultants and black belts.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study whether the adoption of Six Sigma quality management by a firm positively affects its financial performance. The correlation between the duration of Six Sigma implementation period and the financial status of the firm is investigated as well. Methods: We conduct the analysis using data from Manufacturing Industry Productivity Panel Survey 2013 provided by Korea Productivity Center and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Propensity score matching is used to reduce sample selection bias of observational study. Furthermore, we use multiple linear regression in order to study the relationship between the implementation of Six Sigma quality management and financial performance. The return on assets and ratio of net income to net sales are considered as dependent variable and implementation of Six Sigma as independent variable. Results: The indication of this analysis is that implementation of Six Sigma quality management does not significantly enhance financial status. The firms that adopted Six Sigma quality management were categorized into three groups according to the implementation period. Comparison of each group with the firms that do not adopt Six Sigma quality management does not show statistically significant enhancement of financial status. Conclusion: In conclusion, both adoption and duration of six sigma quality management do not affect financial performance significantly.

  • This study is an empirical study on the relationships among success factors of six sigma(support of top management, education and training, performance-based reward, customer and quality focused thought) on change management activity and business performance. In particular, mediating effect of change management activity on the relationship between success factors of six sigma and business performance is empirically analysed to find causes and impacts among these variables. The study results are as follows: First, there were positive relationships between critical success factors of six sigma(except support of top management) and change management activity. Second, there was also a positive relationship between change management activity and business performance. Third, there were also positive relationships between critical success factors of six sigma and business performance. Finally, change management activity was partial mediating effects on the relationship between critical success factors of six sigma(education and training, performance-based reward, customer and quality focused thought) and business performance. On the other hand, support of top management had no mediating effect on business performance.

  • Even though, the recent management innovation techniques: The 'Six-Sigma' and the 'BSC (Balanced Score Card)' are introduced to many different companies and are used very effectively, Based on the company's substantial and unique characteristics, the quality and the strategies on management are showing the reliability limits in applications in the company. Therefore, the Integrated Management System is presenting a model for stable application of the, activity in the Six-Sigma based on the theoretical notions of the BSC.

  • Nowadays, globally high-grade companies have done their best for increasing their competitive power through a many kinds of method in incisive competition for making certain of a pacesetting position. Among the rest, Six Sigma have been the best methodology of improving process and have proven to be effective by the result of improving process in many of manufacturing business, however, it has not obtained excellent results in the transaction business. In transaction business, a $30\sim50%$ costs in total costs is generated by slow-speed working and reworking. The slow processes decrease the quality and increase the cost, which decreases customer satisfaction, and finally the income is decreased. All of them are so called wastes in processes. For this, adopting of lean six sigma methodology in process management can eliminate the wastes and reduce the variation. This study focuses on distribution with the domains like capacity, layout, amount of location, assignment of product, operation procedure and operation rule in order to improve these domains, we make a further application of eight analysis ways based on DMAIC method for improving operation of processes of distribution center as the third profit source. The goal of this study is to trace an approach that can easily adopt of Lean Six Sigma in operational management of distribution center by a kind of data, analysis method and template.
