Psychological Distress and Pain Reporting in Australian Coal Miners

  • Background: Coal mining is of significant economic importance to the Australian economy. Despite this fact, the related workforce is subjected to a number of psychosocial risks and musculoskeletal injury, and various psychological disorders are common among this population group. Because only limited research has been conducted in this population group, we sought to examine the relationship between physical (pain) and psychological (distress) factors, as well as the effects of various demographic, lifestyle, and fatigue indicators on this relationship. Methods: Coal miners (N = 231) participated in a survey of musculoskeletal pain and distress on-site during their work shifts. Participants also provided demographic information (job type, age, experience in the industry, and body mass index) and responded to questions about exercise and sleep quality (on-and off-shift) as well as physical and mental tiredness after work. Results: A total of 177 workers (80.5%) reported experiencing pain in at least one region of their body. The majority of the sample population (61.9%) was classified as having low-level distress, 28.4% had scores indicating mild to moderate distress, and 9.6% had scores indicating high levels of distress. Both number of pain regions and job type (being an operator) significantly predicted distress. Higher distress score was also associated with greater absenteeism in workers who reported lower back pain. In addition, perceived sleep quality during work periods partially mediated the relationship between pain and distress. Conclusion: The study findings support the existence of widespread musculoskeletal pain among the coal-mining workforce, and this pain is associated with increased psychological distress. Operators (truck drivers) and workers reporting poor sleep quality during work periods are most likely to report increased distress, which highlights the importance of supporting the mining workforce for sustained productivity.

  • 다양한 미생물은 세포와 주변의 과산화를 방지하고 여분의 에너지를 보관하기 위해 ${\alpha}$-acetolactate decarboxylase(ALDC)를 이용해 아세토인을 생성한다. 아세토인은 안전한 식품 향미 개선제이기 때문에 ALDC를 이용한 아세토인 생합성에 많은 산업체가 관심을 가지고 있다. ALDC는 ${\alpha}$-acetolactate의 탈카르복실화 반응을 통해 아세토인을 생산하는 금속 의존 효소이다. 본 논문에서는 고초균 아종 spizizenii의 ALDC(bssALDC) 결정구조를 $1.7{\AA}$ 해상도에서 보고한다. bssALDC는 두 개의 ${\beta}$-sheet가 중앙부를 형성하는 ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ 구조를 가진다. bssALDC는 중앙부의 소수성 상호작용과 주변부의 친수성 상호작용을 통해 이합체를 형성한다. bssALDC는 세 개의 histidine 잔기와 세 개의 물 분자를 이용해 아연 이온에 배위결합한다. 구조와 서열의 비교 분석에 기초하여 아연 이온과 이 주변부 bssALDC 잔기들이 bssALDC의 효소 활성부위임을 제안한다.

HeLa E-Box Binding Protein, HEB, Inhibits Promoter Activity of the Lysophosphatidic Acid Receptor Gene Lpar1 in Neocortical Neuroblast Cells

  • Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is an endogenous lysophospholipid with signaling properties outside of the cell and it signals through specific G protein-coupled receptors, known as $LPA_{1-6}$. For one of its receptors, $LPA_1$ (gene name Lpar1), details on the cis-acting elements for transcriptional control have not been defined. Using 5'RACE analysis, we report the identification of an alternative transcription start site of mouse Lpar1 and characterize approximately 3,500 bp of non-coding flanking sequence 5' of mouse Lpar1 gene for promoter activity. Transient transfection of cells derived from mouse neocortical neuroblasts with constructs from the 5' regions of mouse Lpar1 gene revealed the region between -248 to +225 serving as the basal promoter for Lpar1. This region also lacks a TATA box. For the region between -761 to -248, a negative regulatory element affected the basal expression of Lpar1. This region has three E-box sequences and mutagenesis of these E-boxes, followed by transient expression, demonstrated that two of the E-boxes act as negative modulators of Lpar1. One of these E-box sequences bound the HeLa E-box binding protein (HEB), and modulation of HEB levels in the transfected cells regulated the transcription of the reporter gene. Based on our data, we propose that HEB may be required for a proper regulation of Lpar1 expression in the embryonic neocortical neuroblast cells and to affect its function in both normal brain development and disease settings.

Radiolabeling of antibody-mimetic scaffold protein with 99mTc tricarbonyl precursor via hexahistidine (His6)-tag

  • Recently, antibody-like scaffold proteins have received a great deal of interest in diagnosis and therapy applications because of their intrinsic features that are often required for tumor imaging and therapy. Intrinsic issues that are associated with therapeutic application of antibody-like scaffold proteins, particularly in cancer treatment, include an efficient and straightforward radiolabeling for understanding in vivo biodistribution and excretion route, and monitoring therapeutic responses. Herein, we report an efficient and straightforward method for radiolabeling of antibody-like scaffold proteins with the $[^{99m}Tc(OH_2)_3(CO)_3]^+$ ($^{99m}Tc$-tricarbonyl) by using a site-specific direct labeling method via hexahistidine-tag, which is a widely used for general purification of recombinant proteins with His-affinity chromatography. Repebody is a new class of antibody-like scaffold protein that consists of highly diverse leucine-rich repeat (LRR) modules. Although all possible biomedical applications with repebody are ongoing, it's in vivo biodistribution and excretion pathway has not yet been explored. In this study, hexahistidine ($His_6$)-tag bearing repebody (rEgH9) was labeled with [$^{99m}Tc$]-tricarbonyl. Repebody protein was radiolabeled with high radiolabeling efficiency (>90%) and radiolabeled compound was more than 99% pure after purification. These results clearly demonstrate that the present radiolabeling method will be useful molecular imaging study.

Surgical Treatment for a Huge Maxillary Ameloblastoma via Le Fort I Osteotomy: A Case Report

  • Ameloblastomaa are odontogenic benign tumors with epithelial origin, which are characterized by slow, aggressive, and invasive growth. Most ameloblastomas occur in the mandible, and their prevalence in the maxilla is low. A 27-year-old male visited our clinic with a chief complaint of the left side nasal airway obstruction. Three-dimensional computed tomography showed left maxillary sinus filled with a mass. Except for the perforated maxillary left edentulous area, no invaded or destructed bone was noted. The tumor was excised via Le Fort I osteotomy. The main mass was then sent for biopsy and it revealed acanthomatous ameloblastoma. The lesion in the left maxillary sinus reached the ethmoidal sinus through the nasal cavity but did not invade the orbit and skull base. The tumor was accessed through a Le Fort I downfracture in consideration of the growth pattern and range of invasion. The operation site healed without aesthetic appearances and functional impairments. However, further long-term clinical observation is necessary in the future for the recurrence of ameloblastoma. Conservative surgical treatment could be the first choice considering fast recovery after surgery and the patient's life quality.

혈액종양 환자의 골수검사 후 침상안정 시간에 따른 불편감 및 출혈 (Discomfort and Bleeding in Relation to Bedrest Time after Bone Marrow Examination among Hemato-oncology Patients)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate hemato-oncology patients' discomfort and bleeding in relation to the bedrest time after bone marrow examination. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted. The data were collected using self- report questionnaire from total of 131 patients who underwent bone marrow examination from January 2017 to September 2017. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed-rank test, McNemar's test and logistic regression. Results: The level of discomfort after 4 hours of bedrest was significantly higher when compared to 2 hours of bedrest(p<.001). The occurrence of bleeding after 2 hours of bedrest was significantly higher than 4 hours of bedrest(p<.001), however the degree of bleeding was slight. No bleeding occurred in 84% of the patients after 2 hours of bedrest. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that shortening the bed rest time after bone marrow examination was helpful in improving the patient's well-being. Bedrest time could be shortened according to the site of bone marrow examination and patient's condition.

사전방재활동을 위한 태풍정보 콘텐츠 개발에 관한 기초 연구 (Preliminary study on Typhoon Information Contents Development for Pre-disaster Prevention Activities)

  • This study intend to induce citizen's voluntary preliminary disaster prevention activity to reduce damage of typhoon that occurs every year. For this purpose, a survey was conducted to develop Typhoon information contents. The number of samples used in the survey was set to 500 people, and citizens living in Jeju, Busan, and Jeonlanam-do were surveyed for areas with high typhoon disasters in order to develop practical and efficient information. The survey consisted of perception about natural disaster, how to get and use weather information, satisfaction with typhoon information and requirements. The general public perceived the typhoon as the first natural disaster. As a result of responding to the method of obtaining and utilizing weather information, the frequency of collecting weather information at the time of issuance of typhoon special report is higher than usual. The purpose of using weather information is clear and the response rate is high for the purpose of disaster prevention. The medium mainly collecting weather information is Internet portal site and mobile phone besides television. The current satisfaction with typhoon weather information is 34.8%, in addition to the accuracy of prediction, it is necessary to improve the information (that is content) provided. Specific responses to the content were investigated not only for single meteorological factors, but also for possible damage and potential countermeasures in the event of a disaster such as a typhoon. As can be seen from the above results, people are requested to provide information that can be used to detect and cope with disasters. The development of new content using easy accessible media will contribute to the reduction of damages caused by the typhoon that will occur in the future, and also to the disaster prevention activity.

수레바퀴 암치료법을 시행한 전이성 부신피질암 환자의 증상 개선 및 삶의 질 향상에 대한 증례보고 (A case study on a metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma patient treated by Wheel Balanced Cancer Therapy with improvement of quality of life and related symptoms)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to report a metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma patient treated with wheel balanced cancer therapy (WBCT) regimen. Methods: A 52-year-old female patient diagnosed and incised with metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma visited the East West Cancer Center (EWCC) on Sep. 1st, 2018 for WBCT. The patient was treated with WBCT for an approximately 2 months, from Sep. 1st to Nov. 9th. Computed tomography (CT) was used to follow-up the tumor site. Laboratory analysis and National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTCAE), version 5.0 were used to evaluate the safety of WBCT. Results: The surgical beds after surgery (Lt. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy) were maintained without recurrence at follow up chest CT, and related symptoms and quality of life (QOL) were improved during the WBCT. Conclusion: This case study suggests that WBCT may help to improve QOL of adrenocortical carcinoma patient.

  • 편측 부분 무치악에서 소수의 치아로 지대치를 형성하여 가철성 국소의치 제작 시 환자의 불편함 및 지대치 손상 등으로 인해 만족도가 낮아질 수 있다. 최근 편측 부분 무치악에서 임플란트 고정성 보철물을 지대치로 사용하여 양측성 후방 연장 국소의치로 제작하는 방법이 보고되고 있다. 본 증례에서 임플란트 고정성 보철물을 사용하여 환자의 수직 악간관계를 보존하고 본인의 치아와 같은 형태를 부여하여 환자에게 심리적 안정감을 주며 향상된 저작 기능의 결과를 제공하였다. 또한 임플란트 고정성 보철물을 통하여 예후가 불량할 것으로 예상되는 편측성 후방 연장 국소의치를 역학적, 기능적으로 유리한 양측성 후방 연장 국소의치를 제작하였다. 국소의치의 지지, 유지, 안정 요소의 향상을 가져왔으며 환자에게 경제적 및 사용 시 만족감을 가져왔다.
