Effect of Al Amount on the Sintering Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Reaction Bonded Alumina (반응 소결 Alumina의 소결거동과 기계적 성질에 미치는 Al 첨가량의 영향)

  • The effect of Al content and heating rate on the sintering behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of reaction bonded alumina (RBAO) was investigated. As the heating rate became slower a critical Al content which could be added to RBAO increased. The weight gain and linear shrinkage of RBAO containing of 55 vol% Al were 28% and 6.5%, respectively. The relative density of RBAO decreased from 96 to 94%, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. The hardness of RBAO increased from 17.8 to 19.9 GPa and the bending strength enhanced from 370 to 570 MPa, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. On the other hand, the wear rate of RBAO degraded from 6.7 to 3.39$\times$10-5 $\textrm{mm}^2$/kg and the fracture toughness decreased from 4.1 to 3.6 MPa.m1/2, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. Fracture modes were shown to the mixed mode of inter/transgranular. However, transgranular fracture was dominant with increasing the content of Al.

Effect of Shell Structure of Artificial Lightweight Aggregates on the Emission Rate of Absorbed Water (인공경량골재의 표피층 구조가 흡수된 물의 방출속도에 미치는 영향)

  • The artificial aggregates with dense surface layer (shell) was fabricated and the dependence of water emission rate upon the shell structures was studied. The EAF dust containing many flux components and waste white clay with ignition loss of above 48% were used as for liquid phase and gas forming agents during a sintering process respectively. In addition, the shell structure was modified with various processes and the modification effect on water emission rate was analyzed. The pores under $10{\mu}m$ were found in the sintered artificial light aggregates and disappeared by incorporating to a bigger pore during re-sintering. The water emission rate in an initial step depended on a void content of aggregates filled in a bottle rather than a shell structure. But, after 7 days where the water emission of the aggregate with a shell is above 40%, the shell of aggregates suppressed the water emission. The core of aggregates was exposed and most shell was lost when crushed to smaller size so, the ability for suppressing water emission of the crushed aggregates decreased. The activation energy for the water emission was $3.46{\pm}0.25{\times}10^{-1}$J/mol for the most specimens showing that the activation energy is irrelevant to the pore size distribution and shell structure.

  • The nonlinear electrical properties and aging characteristics against surge stress of ZPCCL-based varistors were investigated for different sintering temperatures of the range $1240-1300^{\circ}C$. As the sintering temperature increased, the varistor voltage decreased from 732.2 to 53.8 V/mm, the nonlinear exponent decreased from 58.5 to 4.1, and the leakage current increased from $0.38{\mu}A$ to $46.5{\mu}A$. The varistors sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ and $1260^{\circ}C$ exhibited the high stability against multiple surge, $150A/cm^2(8{\times}20{\mu}s)$. On the whole, the variation rate of electrical characteristics against impulse current stress was gradually increased in order of varistor voltage$\rightarrow$nonlinear exponent$\rightarrow$dissipation facto$\rightarrow$leakage current.

  • In the iron ore sinter process, temperature distribution pattern in sintering bed is related with productivity and quality of sintered ore. Evenly heat distribution make the uniform quality of sintered ore but in normal operating condition, upper part of bed has lack of heat and scarce quality of sintered ore, thus yeild rate is decreased and productivity is diminished. Therefore, using the additional fuel for increasing quality and flue gas recirculation for increasing productivity are considered and effect of both processes are discussed.

  • Selective laser sintering is a kind of rapid prototyping process whereby a three-dimensional part is built layer wise by laser scanning the powder. This process is highly influenced by powder and laser parameters such as laser power, scan rate, fill spacing and layer thickness. Therefore a study on fabricating Fe-Ni-Cr powder by selective laser sintering has been performed. In this study, fabrication was performed by experimental facilities consisting of a 200W fiber laser which can be focused to 0.08mm and atmospheric chamber which can control atmospheric pressure with argon. With power increase or energy density decrease, line width was decreased and line surface quality was improved with energy density increase. Surface quality of quadrangle structure was improved with fill spacing optimization.

  • The aggregates made of clay, carbon and $Fe_2O_3$ were prepared to investigate the mechanism of black core formation and the property differences at various sintering atmospheres. The aggregates were sintered at oxidized, neutralized and reduced atmospheres. The specific gravity, absorption rate, percent of black core area were measured at various compositions and sintering atmospheres. The aggregates sintered at oxidized atmosphere showed clear border between shell and black core area. Hence, the aggregates sintered at reduced and neutralized atmospheres showed only black core area in the cross-section of the aggregates. The specific gravity of the aggregates sintered at reduced atmosphere increased with increasing carbon contents and that was the lowest of all aggregates sintered at various atmospheres. Adsorption rate increased with increasing carbon contents at all atmospheres.

  • Grain-growth behavior in the $95Na_{1/2}Bi_{1/2}TiO_3-5BaTiO_3$ (mole fraction, NBT-5BT) system has been investigated with the addition of $Na_2CO_3$. When $Na_2CO_3$ is added to NBT-5BT, the growth rate is higher than desired and grains are already impinging each other during the initial stage of sintering. The grain size decreases as the sintering temperature increases. With the addition of $Na_2CO_3$, a liquid phase infiltrates the interfaces between grains during sintering. The interface structure can be changed to be more faceted and the interface migration rate can increase due to fast material transport through the liquid phase. As the sintering temperature increases, the impingement of abnormal grains increases because the number of abnormal grains increases. Therefore, the average grain size of abnormal grains can be decreased as the temperature increases. The phenomenon can provide evidence that grain coarsening in NBT-5BT with addition of $Na_2CO_3$ is governed by the growth of facet planes, which would occur via mixed control.

  • The Spark Plasma Sintering(SPS) method offers a means of fabricating a sintered-body having high density without grain growth through short sintering time and a one-step process. A titanium compact having high density and purity was fabricated by the SPS process. It can be used to fabricate a Ti sputtering target with controlled parameters such as sintering temperature, heating rate, and pressure to establish the optimized processing conditions. The compact/target(?) has a diameter of ${\Phi}150{\times}6.35mm$. The density, purity, phase transformation, and microstructure of the Ti compact were analyzed by Archimedes, ICP, XRD and FE-SEM. A Ti thin-film fabricated on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate by a sputtering device (SRN-100) was analyzed by XRD, TEM, and SIMS. Density and grain size were up to 99% and below $40{\mu}m$, respectively. The specific resistivity of the optimized Ti target was $8.63{\times}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

Sintering Effects on Fe/Mo Ordering and Magnetoresistance in Double Perovskite Sr2FeMoO6

  • We have investigated sintering effects on Fe/Mo ordering and magnetoresistance (MR) in double perovskite-reflection lines due to $Sr_2FeMoO_6$ (SFMO). Polycrystalline samples have been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction by sintering in a stream of 5% $H_2/Ar$ gas. All samples are single phase and exhibit a series of superstructurecation ordering at Fe and Mo sites. As sintering temperature increases from 900 to $1300^{\circ}C$, the degree of Fe/Mo ordering increases from 82 to 92%, magnetization (15 K, 7 kOe) increases from 1.6 to 2.7 ${\mu}_B/f.u.,$ and Curie temperature increases at a rate of 4.3 K/% with the increase of Fe/Mo ordering ratio. The magnitude of MR measured at 5 K is 19% for sample prepared at $1000^{\circ}C$ with magnetic fields of 7 kOe. The observed MR is proportional to the square of magnetization indicating that the MR feature in SFMO is explained by the spin-polarized tunneling at grain boundaries.

A Study on the Grain Growth and PLZT Ceramics Fabrication by Freeze Drying Method. (동결건조법에 의한 PLZT 세라믹 제조 및 결정립 성자에 관한 연구.)

  • In this study, PLZT ceramics were fabricated by freeze-drying and normal sintering method. The compositional rate of specimen was selected 9/65/35 (La/Zr/Ti) which have good optical and dielectric properties, sintering time was varied 1, 10, 30, 40, 50, 55, 60 and 65 hr at $1250^{\circ}C$. After sintering, the optical and dielectric properties were investigated with the grain size. As the result of the experiment, freeze-dried powder appeared particle size less than 1 um. The relative dielectric constant was increased linearly with the sintering time, specimen which sintered for 65 hr had the highest value, 5780. Grain was grown with increasing time, in the case of specimen sintered for 60 hr, the grain size was 8.4 um. Transmittance was increased with the grain size. In the case of 8.4 um grain size, the transmittance was 56 %. Curie temperature was decreased linearly by the surface-layer effect of space-charge, in the case of grain size which were 1.8 um and 8.4 um, appeared at $100^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively.
