Microstructure and Sintering Behavior of ZnO Thermoelectric Materials Prepared by the Pulse-Current-Sintering Method

  • Thermoelectric conversion efficiency of thermoelectric elements can be increased by using a structure combining n-type and p-type semiconductors. From the above point of view, attention was directed at ZnO as a candidate n-type semiconductor material and investigations were made. As the result, a dimensionless figure of merit ZT close to 0.28 (1073K) was obtained for specimens produced by the PCS (Pulse Current Sintering) method with addition of specified quantities of $TiO_2$, CoO, and $Al_2O_3$ to ZnO. It was found that the interstitial $TiO_2$ in the ZnO restrains the grain growth and CoO acts onto the bond between grains. The influence of the inclusion of $TiO_2$ and CoO onto the sintering behavior also was investigated.

소결법에 의한 $ZrO_2/Metal$계 경사기능재료에 관한 연구(1) (A Study on Zirconia/Metal.Functionally Gradient Materials by Sintering Method(1))

  • Functionally gradient materials(FGM), which have the continuous or stepwise variation in a composition and microstructure, are being noticed as the material that solves problems caused by heterogeneous interface of coating or joining. And these materials also expect new functions occured by gradient composition itself. Therefore, to examine possibility of thermal barrier materials, TZP/Mo·FGM and TZP/Ni·FGM were fabricated by sintering method. As to the sintered specimens, sintering shrinkage, relative density and Vicker's hardness in each composition were examined. The phenomena due to the difference of sintering shrinkage velocity during sintering process and the thermal stress induced through differences of thermal expansion coefficient in FGM were discussed. And the structure changes at interface and microsturcture of FGM were investigated. As a results, the difference of shrinkage between ceramic and metal was about 14% in TZP/Mo and 7% in TZP/Ni. The relative density and hardness were considerably influenced by metal content changes. Owing to unbalance of sintering shrinkage velocity between ceramic and metal, various sintering defects were occured. To control these sintering defects and thermal stress, gradient composition of FGM should be narrow. The microstructure changes of FGM depended on the ceramic or metal volume percents and were analogous to the theoretical design.

탄화붕소 소결 거동 연구를 위한 율속제어소결의 적용 (Application of rate-controlled sintering into the study of sintering behavior of boron carbide)

  • 율속제어소결은 소결 공정 중 실시간으로 측정되는 시편의 팽창/수축거동을 이용해 일정한 수축거동을 하도록 로의 파워를 조정하는 소결방법으로, 온도를 조절하기 위해 로의 파워를 제어하는 일반적인 소결에 비해 시편의 소결 과정을 세밀히 제어할 수 있으며, 특히 소결공정의 최적화를 이룰 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 탄화붕소의 소결에 율속 제어소결을 적용해 각 공정변수의 조절에 따른 소결온도 및 입자성장의 변화를 조사하여 그 상관관계를 규명하고 이를 기존의 이론에 맞추어 해석함으로써 율속제어소결을 어떻게 소결공정 최적화에 이용할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 알아보았으며 이를 통해 향후 미지 소재의 소결공정에 율속제어공정을 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지 고찰해 보았다.

  • The porous metal material is used for injection metal mold with a great deal of gas production because it makes plenty of gas exhausted through pores formed in the metal mold. A canning HIP method was conventionally used for manufacturing of porous metals, but because of difficulty of process control and high cost of production its application was limited. In this experiment, porous metal mold material was produced by an enhanced vacuum sintering method with simply controlled and economical process and porosities/mechanical properties with variation of sintering temperature and duration time during vacuum sintering were studied. As a result, quality goods were obtained at optimized conditions as follows: sintering temperature of $1230^{\circ}C$, duration time of 2 hr and showed superior properties in wear loss and thermal conductivity and the same properties in hardness, TRS (Transverse Rupture Strength), and thermal expansion coefficient in comparison with those under canning HIP.

Influence of the Internal Current on the Sintering Behavior of ZnO Ceramics Sintered by PCS Method

  • The influence of the internal current for the ZnO ceramics on the sintering behavior by pulse current sintering (PCS) method was investigated. To clear the dependence of inner current on the sintering behavior of ZnO ceramics, direct measurement of electric resistance of ZnO specimen under sintering by SPS device was carried out. It was observed that electric resistance of specimen decreases with increase in the temperature. The electric resistance begins to decrease from the low temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The internal structure of sintered ZnO ceramics changed by the control of the internal current in the specimen using $Al_2O_3$ plate.

  • The free sintering of metallic powders blended with non sintering inclusions is investigated by the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Each particle, whatever its nature (metallic or inclusion) is modeled as a sphere that interacts with its neighbors. We investigate the retarding effect of the inclusions on the sintering kinetics. Also, we present a simple coarsening model for the metallic particles, which allows large particles to grow at the expense of the smallest.

층상구조 재료의 소결: 출발물질이 소결결함 및 잔류응력에 미치는 영향 (Sintering of Layer Structure Materials: Effect of Starting Material on Sintering Defects and Residual Stress)

  • 층상구조를 이루는 재료의 소결시 형성되는 다양한 결함 및 잔류응력을 고찰하기 위해 TZP-SUS계 및 ZT/SUS계다층재료와 porcelain/alumina 및 porcelain/Y-TZP 이층재료를 소결법으로 제조하였다. 상압소결로 제조한 다층재료에서는 층간의 소결수축율 차이에 의해 warping, splitting, 균열 등의 소결결함이 관찰되었으며, 중간층수 및 두께의 조절과 출발물질의 제어를 통해 이러한 소결결함이 완화됨을 알 수 있었다. Tape casting법으로 제조한 다층재료에서는 소결시 가한 압력에 의해 소결결함, 특히 warping이 제어됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 이층재료에서 형성되는 잔류응력은 vickers 압입법으로 관찰하였다. Porcelain/alumina에서는 porcelain 측의 계면에 작은 인장응력이, porcelain/Y-TZP에서는 압축응력이 형성됨을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 잔류응력은 이층재료의 강도에도 영향을 미침을 알수 있었다. 결국 다층재료의 소결결함 및 잔류응력은 재료설계와 출발물질 상수에 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

소결첨가재에 의한 텅스텐의 기계적 특성평가 (Evaluation on Mechanical Properties of Tungsten by Sintering Additive Content)

  • Tungsten is a high melting point metal unlike other steel materials, and it is difficult to manufacture because of its high melting temperature. In this study, pressure sintering process method was applied to manufacture the tungsten materials at low temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to densify the sintered material by using a sintering additive. Studies have been conducted on how the amount of titanium for sintering tungsten affects the mechanical properties of tungsten in this study. In order to secure the densification mechanism of tungsten powder during the sintering process, the characteristics of the sintered tungsten material according to the change of titanium content were evaluated. It was investigated the relationship between sintering parameters and mechanical properties for densification of microstructures. The sintered tungsten materials according to sintering additive content showed high sintered density (about 16.31g/cm3) and flexural strength (about 584 MPa) when the content of sintering additive was 3 wt%. However, as the content of the sintering additive increases, mechanical property of flexural strength is decreased, and the porosity is increased due to the heterogeneous sintering around titanium.

$\alpha$-SiC 소결체의 특성에 미치는 소성조건의 영향 (Influence of Sintering Condition on Characteristics of $\alpha$-SiC Ceramics)

  • $\alpha$-SiC(B; 0.4 wt, C; 3 wt%) was sintered in Ar atmosphere from 205$0^{\circ}C$ to 220$0^{\circ}C$ by means of pressureless sintering and gas pressure sintering in order to find optimum sintering condition of $\alpha$-SiC. Mechanical properties and microstructures of sintered bodies were investigated according to sintering method. The effect of sintering condition on sinterability of $\alpha$-SiC was also examined by using the dilatometer. 97.5% and 98.8% of theoretical density were obtained from pressureless sintering and gas pressure sintering of $\alpha$-SiC powder, respectively. And modulus of rupture was measured as 270~350 MPa and 420 MPa respectively.

  • Titanium carbide(TiC) has a poor sinterability due to the strong covalent bond. Thus, it is generally fabricated by either hot pressing or pressureless-sintering at elevated temperature by the addition of sintering aids such as nickel(Ni), molybdenum(Mo) and cobalt(Co). However, these sintering methods have the following disadvantages; (1) the complicated process, (2) the high energy consumption, and (3) the possibility of leaving inevitable impurities in the product, etc. In order to reduce above disadvantages, we investigated the optimum conditions under which dense titanium carbide bodies could be synthesized and sintered simultaneously by high pressure self-combustion sintering(HPCS) method. This method makes good use of the explosive high energy from spontaneous exothermic reaction between titanium and carbon. The optimum conditions for the nearly full-densification were as follows; (1) The densification of sintered body becomes high by increasing the pressing pressure from 400kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ upto 1200 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. (2) Instead of adding the coarse graphite or activated carbon, the fine particles of carbon black should be added as a carbon source. (3) The optimum molar ratio of carbon to titanium (C/Ti) was unity. In reality, titanium carbide body which were prepared under optimum conditions had relatively dense textures with the apparent porosity of 0.5% and the relative density of 98%.
