  • In order to analyze general three dimensional cracks in an infinite body, the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method formulated by Li and Mear is used. A crack is modelled as distribution of displacement discontinuities, and the governing equation is formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations. With the proposed method several example problems for three dimensional cracks in an infinite solid, as well as their growth under fatigue, are solved and the accuracy and efficiency of the method are demonstrated.

  • In this paper, an improved Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is proposed by adding enrichment function to the standard EFG approximation and a discontinuity function is implemented in constructing the shape function across the crack surface. In this method, the singularity and the discontinuity of the crack are efficiently modeled by using initial node distribution to evaluate reliable stress intensity factor, though the standard EFG method requires placing additional nodes near the crack tip. The proposed method enables the initial node distribution to be kept without any additional nodal d.o.f. and expresses the asymptotic stress field near the crack tip successfully. Numerical example verifies the improvement and the effectiveness of the method.

  • In this paper, a three dimensional singularity distribution method is applied to investigate the hydrodynamic interactions between two barges floating on a free surface of a deep water. The results show that the hydrodynamic interaction forces are important in the calculation responses of two barges floating in each other's vicinity. Furthermore the trends of hydrodynamic forces due to the motion of body itself are different from those of a single barged, and the motions of the seaward barge can sometimes exceed those of the seaward barged.

  • A numerical study of fluid flow in driven cavity was carried out using singular finite element method. The driven cavity problem is known to have infinite velocity gradients as well as dual velocity conditions at the singular points. To overcome such difficulties, a finite element method with singular shape functions was used and a special technique was employed to allow multiple values of velocities at the singular points. Application of singular elements in the driven cavity problem has a significant influence on the stability of solution. It was found the singular elements gave a stable solution, especially, for the pressure distribution of the entire flow field by keeping up a large pressure at the singular points. In the existing solutions of driven cavity problem, most efforts were focused on the study of streamlines and vorticities, and pressure were seldom mentioned. In this study, however, more attention was given to the pressure distribution. Computations showed that pressure decreased very rapidly as the distance from the singular point increased. Also, the pressure distribution along the vertical walls showed a smoother transition with singular elements compared to those of conventional method. At the singular point toward the flow direction showed more pressure increase compared with the other side as Reynolds number increased.

  • The finite element alternating method is a convenient and efficient method to analyze three-dimensional cracks embedded in an infinite or a finite body because the method has the property that the uncracked body and cracks can be modeled independently. In this paper the method was applied for fatigue crack growth simulation. A surface crack in a cylinder was considered as an initial crack and the crack configurations and stress intensity factors during the crack growth were obtained. In this paper the finite element alternating method proposed by Nikishkov, Park and Atluri was used after modification. In the method, as the required solution for a crack in an infinite body, the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method formulated by Li and Mear was used. And a crack was modeled as distribution of displacement discontinuities, and the governing equation was formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations.

  • Many analysis methods, including finite element method, have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrary three dimensional cracks, the finite element alternating method is extended. The crack is modeled by the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method as a distribution of displacement discontinuities, which is formulated as singularity-reduced integral equations. And the finite element method is used to calculate the stress values for the uncracked body only. Applied the proposed method to several example problems for planner cracks in finite bodies, the accuracy and efficiency of the method were demonstrated.

  • The application of Green's function in calculation of flow characteristics around submerged and floating bodies due to a regular wave is presented. It is assumed that the fluid is homogeneous, inviscid and incompressible, the flow is irrotational and all body motions are small. Two methods based on the boundary integral equation method (BIEM) are applied to solve associated problems. The first is a low order panel method with triangular flat patches and uniform distribution of velocity potential on each panel. The second method is a high order panel method in which the kernels of the integral equations are modified to make it nonsingular and amenable to solution by the Gaussian quadrature formula. The calculations are performed on a submerged sphere and some floating spheroids of different aspect ratios. The excellent level of agreement with the analytical solutions shows that the second method is more accurate and reliable.

  • In this study comparison of experiment results with the computed results of linear theory and nonlinear theory using singularity method was obtainable. Specially singularity points like sources and vortexes on hydrofoil and freestreamline were distributed to analyze two dimensional flow field of supercavitating cascade using nonlinear theory, and governing equations of flow field were derived and hydraulic characteristics of cascade were calculated by numerical analysis of the governing equations. The results compared linear theory and nonlinear theory with the experiment results of the study are as follows: The tolerances of nonlinear theory were larger than those of linear theory in case of ${\alpha}<10^{\circ}$. Moreover the computational range of attack angles could be expanded from ${\alpha}=10^{\circ}$ to ${\alpha}=25^{\circ}$, the flow field of supercavitating cascade could be analyzed in the condition which the wake thickness and the length of cavity are a variable. The shapes of cavity were changed sensitively according to various variable such as attack angles, pitches and wake thickness, and the pressure distribution of hydrofoil surface was identical almost disregarding wake thickness but changed largely according to attack angle and the length of cavity. Lift coefficient and drag coefficient were reduced according to increasing of wake thickness but the influences of wake thickness were very little in the situation of small pitch and long cavity.

  • Friction welding has may merits such as energy efficiency, simple processing, etc. but it is difficult to obtain good welding at the welded interfaces and heat affected zone. It is discovered that stress singularity exists at the interferes and heat affected zone. The computer program based on boundary element method is utilized in this study. A mathematical model is implemented based on results from several experiments performed at and around the welded interfaces and heat affected zone of disimilar metals under static and dynamic loadings. This stay is to investigate the characteristics of the deformation and fracture behavior around interfaces for friction welded materials under static tensile load. Also, the stress distribution at the tip of crack is analyzed by using BU based on Kelvin's solution of 2-dimensional binding zone. The results of BEM are identical with those in case of considering interfaces of both heat affected zone. Also, stress singularity at the tip of interfaces appears when the elastic modulus ratio is 1.07.

  • Streamlines around a ship's hull can be calculated by using streamline tracing method replacing the ship section with distribution of singularity. The influence of frame lines on the stream surrounding a hull surface, however, can not be found. Jinnaka studied on streamlines for Lewis form by applying the slender body theory. The influence of frame lines on stream surrounding a hull surface is well found in Jinnaka's method. In this paper streamline calculation method for chine type has been developed by using conformal transformation and applying slender body theory as Jinnaka did. Three kinds of model-one of series 62 for chine type, V.L.C.C. and high speed craft built in Korea for Lewis form-were used for streamline calculation;
