  • In order to understand the expression profile of earthworm midgut, we analyzed 1255 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) derived from earthworm midgut cDNA library. Among 1255 ESTs analyzed, 537 (42.8%) ESTs represented 231 unique genes of which 168 ESTs were singletons and 63 ESTs represented by two or more ESTs. A total of 571 unknown ESTs showed no significant homology. The remaining 147 (11.7%) ESTs whose lengths were less than 150 bp were removed. Among 231 identified unique genes, 168 genes (72.7%) were sequenced only once. (omitted)

  • A new fuzzy control algorithm for the control of active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems is proposed in this paper. It combines PDC design of Joh et al. [8][9] and Namdani-gype control rules using fuzzy singletons to handle the nonlinear characteristics of AMB systems efficiently. They are named fine mode control and rough mode control , respectively. The rough mode control yields the fastest response for large deviation of the rotor and the fine mode control fives desired transient response for small deviation of the rotor. The proposed algorithm is applied a AMB systems to verify the performance of the method, The comparison of the proposed method to a linear controller using a linearized model about the equilibrium point and PDC algorithm in [7] show the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

  • Although the incidence of esophageal atresia (EA) is higher in twins than in singletons by two to three times, EA usually affects only one member of twins. We report one pair of twins concordant for EA. A 31-year-old healthy woman bore monozygotic female twins at 36 weeks of gestation. They weighed 2,216 and 2,480 g, respectively. They had EA with distal tracheoesophageal fistula and underwent primary esophageal anastomosis on the birth day and the $2^{nd}$ day of life, respectively. Twin A also had suspicious antral obstruction and pyloroplasty was done simultaneously with esophageal repair. She needed antral web excision for continued gastric stasis one month after $1^{st}$ operation and three balloon dilatations of the esophagus. Twin B recovered uneventfully.

  • This paper investigated the effect of audio and visual cues on Korean and Japanese EFL learners' perception of the lateral/retroflex contrast in English. In a perception experiment, the two English consonants /l/ and /r/ were embedded in initial and medial position in nonsense words in the context of the vowels /i, a, u/. Singletons and clusters were included in the speech material. Audio and video recordings were made using a total of 108 items. The items were presented to Korean and Japanese learners of English in three conditions: audio-alone (A), visual-alone (V) and audio-visual presentation (AV). The results showed that there was no evidence of AV benefit for the perception of the /l/-/r/ contrast for either Korean or Japanese learners of English. Korean listeners showed much better identification rates of the /l/-/r/ contrast than Japanese listeners when presented in audio or audio-visual conditions.

The results suggest that increasing auditory proficiency in identifying a non-native contrast is linked with an increasing proficiency in using visual cues to the contrast.

  • This study determined the effects of twin birth on subsequent postpartum disorders, culling and reproductive performance, and its risk factors in dairy cows. Detailed data related to reproduction, health, and calving events, including dates of artificial insemination (AI) and calving, hormonal treatment prior to conception, cow parity, twin birth, retained placenta, metabolic disorders, and endometritis were collected from 1,717 individual calvings on 9 dairy farms. The incidence rate of twin birth was 3.4%. Gestation length was shorter in cows with twin birth ($270.6{\pm}2.0$ days) than cows giving birth to singletons ($279.5{\pm}0.2$ days, P < 0.01). The incidence of retained placenta (47.5 vs. 16.0%), metabolic disorders (18.6 vs. 3.8%) endometritis (62.7 vs. 28.2%), and culling rate (32.2 vs. 16.5%) was greater in cows with twin birth than in cows giving birth to singletons, respectively (P < 0.01). The hazard of pregnancy (adjusted hazard ratio, AHR) by 210 days in milk analyzed using Cox proportional hazards model was affected by calving season, in that the rate of pregnancy for cows calved during spring was less than for cows calved during winter (AHR = 0.80; P = 0.01); this was also true for endometritis (AHR = 0.46, P < 0.01). AHR was not affected by twin birth. Logistic analysis demonstrated that increasing the cow parity (P < 0.01) and hormonal treatment prior to conception (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 1.84, P < 0.05) increased the risk of twin birth. These results demonstrate that twin births are responsible for severe economic losses through the increased occurrence of postpartum disorders and culling; thus, appropriate management for the deleterious impact of twin birth, and/or reducing the risk factors by herd control regarding cow parity and the use of reproductive hormones prior to conception might be necessary.

  • This report describes a set of seven informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one insertion-deletion (INDEL) distributed over 24 cultivars that can be used for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cultivar identification. We analyzed 163,000 genomic DNA sequences downloaded from Tobacco Genome Initiative database and assembled 31,370 contigs and 60,000 singletons. Using relatively long contigs, we designed primer sets for PCR amplification. We amplified 61 loci from 24 cultivars and sequenced the PCR products. We found seven significant SNPs and one INDEL among the sequences and we classified the 24 cultivars into 10 groups. SNP frequency of tobacco, 1/8,380 bp, was very low in comparison with those of other plant species, between 1/46 bp and 1/336 bp. For exact identification of tobacco cultivars, many more SNP markers should be developed. This study is the first attempt to identify tobacco cultivars using SNP markers.

  • The traditional calculation of gestation length (GL) in Holstein cows relies solely on the insemination day and has a high error rate for actual calving dates. The present study was conducted to develop a more accurate method of estimating GL. Among 3,578 Holstein cows, the number of fetuses had a significant (p < 0.05) effect, with GLs of 282.4 ± 2.5 days for singletons and 276.0 ± 1.6 days for twins. Within the singleton group, the GLs were 284.6 ± 1.9 days for males and 280.3 ± 1.5 days for females, a significant difference (p < 0.05). However, within the twin group, there was no difference in GLs among twin males, twin females, or twins of both sexes. Gestation was significantly shorter for singleton males born from June to August but significantly longer for twin males born in the May to June period (p < 0.05). Neither parity nor housing type was associated with any significant difference in GL. In order to predict the calving dates of Holstein cows accurately and improve their management, calculations should consider the number and sex of fetuses as well as the insemination season.

  • In order to obtain greater insight into the relevant genomic expression patterns of Trichinella spiralis, 992 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were collected from a cDNA library of T. spiralis muscle stage larvae and assembled into 60 clusters and 385 singletons. Of them, 445 (44.7%) ESTs were annotated to their homologous genes, and small fractions were matched to known genes of nematodes. The annotated ESTs were classified into 25 eukaryotic orthologous groups (KOG). Cytochrome C oxidase (34 clones) was found to be most frequent species.
