Development of a process to apply uniform pressure to bond CFRP patches to the inner surface of undercut-shaped sheet metal parts (언더컷 형상의 판재 성형품에 보강용 CFRP 패치의 접합을 위한 공정기술 개발)

  • Partial reinforcement of sheet metal parts with CFRP patch is a technology that can realize ultra-lightweight body parts while overcoming the high material cost of carbon fiber. Performing these patchworks with highly productive press equipment solves another issue of CFRP: high process costs. The A-pillar is the main body part and has an undercut shape for fastening with other parts such as roof panels and doors. Therefore, it is difficult to bond CFRP patches to the A-pillar with a general press forming tool. In this paper, a flexible system that applies uniform pressure to complex shapes using ceramic particles and silicone rubber is proposed. By benchmarking various A-pillars, a reference model with an undercut shape was designed, and the system was configured to realize a uniform pressure distribution in the model. The ceramic spherical particles failed to realize the uniform distribution of high pressure due to their high hardness and point contact characteristics, which caused damage to the CFRP patch. Compression equipment made of silicone rubber was able to achieve the required pressure level for curing the epoxy. Non-adhesion defects between the metal and the CFRP patch were confirmed in the area where the bending deformation occurred. This defect could be eliminated by optimizing the process conditions suitable for the newly developed flexible system.

  • Based on eco-friendly advantages and the enhanced development in the chemical and physical characteristics, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is widely used in producing precision parts in the automotive, medical, electronics, aeronautical and many other industries. In the current work, a thermoplastic-thermoset multi component injection molding (MCM) was developed for a waterproof automotive connector housing using PBT and LSR resins. Measurements of the rheological characteristics of PBT and LSR were made to improve the reliability of the numerical analysis for the multi component injection process. With the measured viscosity, pvT and curing data, numerical analysis of the multi cycle injection molding was conducted using simulation software (Sigma V5.0).

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and experimental results of an electromagnetic microvalve for drug delivery systems. The microvalve consists of two silicon substrates with a silicone rubber diaphragm and a flow channel, a PDMS layer, and an electromagnetic actuator. Each substrate is fabricated by using the silicon wet etch, SU-8 mold process and $O_2$ plasma bonding.

  • The design and fabrication of a metallic bipolar plate-gasket assembly for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) is defined. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was prepared by inserting a previously prepared bipolar plate in the specially designed gasket mold. For this aim, a proprietary fluoro-silicone based rubber was injected directly into the bipolar plate borders. Gaskets obtained like this showed the chemically / physically stable and the good sealibilty in typically operating PEM fuel cell conditions. And also, this bipolar plate-gasket assembly shows lots of advantages with respect to traditional PEMFCs stack assembling systems: useful application to automative stacking due to easy handling, reduced fabrication time, possibility of quality control and failed elements substitution. This bipolar plate-gasket assembly was evaluated in the short fuel cell stack and met the leakage requirement for normal operation both in short-term and in long-term operation. Especially, it was confirmed that this gasket could be applied successfully even in the high pressure FEM fuel cell systems(over 2.0 bar in absolute pressure).

  • Automotive waterproof connectors are highly functional parts that must be air-tight in a complex environment. In the LSR multi-cavity injection molding process for manufacturing waterproof connectors, it is important to maintain a uniform curing temperature between the cavities in order to obtain a quality product. For this purpose, we designed the capacity of the cartridge heater differently for each position, and then linked the heat transfer analysis and optimization module to obtain the optimal cartridge heater capacity. As a result of the optimization analysis, the temperature deviation between cavities was decreased from $13.1^{\circ}C$ to $8.1^{\circ}C$ compared with the case in which constant heater capacity was applied, so that the design criterion could be satisfied within a temperature deviation of $10^{\circ}C$ for uniform curing. This study suggests that this method can be applied efficiently to the design of a large area multi-cavity LSR mold heater.

Influence of mechanical properties of ultra-dental stone on setting methods (경화방법이 치과용 경석고의 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of mechanical properties of various ultra-dental stone by setting methods. Methods: 240 cylinder specimens($10mm{\times}20mm$) were prepared from three ultra-dental stones(Gemma, Die keen and Fuji rock; n = 80) in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations. Half of the specimens of each stone(n = 40) were dried in open air within a room temperature; the other half(n = 40) underwent in a silicone rubber mold in open air for 30 minutes and then were dried in a microwave oven for 10 minutes to 600W. Compressive strength(CS), compressive modulus(CM) and diametral tensile strength(DTS) conducted until fracture using Instron 5966 at each of the following periods: 1 and 24 hours from mixing. One-way analysis of variance and Scheffe's post hoc test were performed for statistical comparisons at a significance level of P<.05. Results: The CS and CM values in all dental stone indicated highest after 24h(54.25 MPa < ) than the values for specimens dried in microwave method. The DTS values revealed the highest microwave method. However, in 24h, FJ(Fu-ji rock) and GM(Gemma) had lower mechanical properties than air. Conclusion : Within the limitations of this study, CS did not influence by microwave method but DTS affected according to the setting.
