  • The surface of rutile titania nanoparticles was chemically modified by reacting with alkoxy silane. The surface and rheological properties in silicone oil having a wide range of viscosity were investigated. Total surface free energy($\gamma_S$) of the titania particles decreased from 53.12 to 26.94 mJ/$m^2$ as the silane used for surface treatment was increased from 0 to 5.0 wt$\%$. The surface free energy of neat silane was 25.5 mJ/$m^2$, which is quite close to that oftitania particles treated with 5.0 wt$\%$ silane. Due to the hydrophobic nature oftreated-titania, the contact angle was accordingly higher for polar solvent in the order of water>ethylene glycol> formamide>$\alpha$-bromonaphthalene. In sum of rheological behavior, as the applied shear stress or viscosity of the silicone oil increased, the titania particles tend to form layers and agglomerated clusters, showing shear-thinning and shear-thickening behaviors, sequentially. A good dispersion of discrete titania particles obeying a Newtonian flow behavior was achieved at a surface energy or low concentration of silane-treated titania particles in hydrophobic silicone oil.

  • Many kinds of experiments were performed for the quality control of antifoaming agents used in thermal power pIants of KEPCO. We tried to establish more convenient ans more accurate quantitative analytical method to determine the amount of silicone oil in silicone oil type antifoaming agent regardless of the amount and/or the type of involved surface active agents. First, the amount of silicone oil was measured by gravimetric method or centrifugal method using very simple apparatus, and then was compared to the results of FT-lR spectroscopy. The centrifugal method was turned out a poor method depending upon the recovery test and virtual experiments. Some antifoaming agents showed very similar results between gravimetric method and spectroscopic methods, and the others gave very different results. We concluded that FT-lR spectroscopy is the most convenient and reliable methodto determine the amounts of silicone oil in the antifoaming agents.

  • The fluid ensemble in the liquid lens, which is composed of electrolyte and silicone oil, is the key material system to vary the focal length processing of the electrochemical desorption. In order to characterize the capability of the liquid lens according to response time and optical range, we prepared a fluid ensemble comprising the electrolyte and oil. To elucidate the physical mechanism of the effective response time, we examined the viscosity dependency while satisfying the requirements for the density and refractive index of the electrolyte and oil, respectively. The characterization results indicated that the response time (up and down) is influenced by the viscosity of the electrolyte and oil. On this basis, we prepared a fluid ensemble capable of reversibly adjusting for the focal length of the liquid lens, as well as the response time. The ensemble is applicable to various systems such as micro-lens and optical sensors.

  • Corrosion of reinforcement steel rebar is a serious problem in a wide range of concrete application for buildings and infrastructures. Hydrophobizing surface treatments, such as self-assembled monolayer coating, edible oil-impregnation and silicone oil-impregnation were applied to solidified concrete. The hydrophobizing of concrete significantly reduces an absorption and transportation of water toward a steel rebar in concrete, so that the corrosion resistance of the steel rebar. In particular, the silicone oil-impregnation not only forms the hydrophobic monolayer on the concrete but also fills the inter-connected pores of concrete, thus the corrosion of steel rebar is significantly inhibited compared to the self-assembled monolayer coating and edible oil-impregnation. Therefore, the silicone oil-impregnation can be a promising candidate for preventing corrosion of steel rebar in concrete for durable performance and safety.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide the fundamental data which can be used for the design of pole transformers. For the purpose, electrical characteristics of aged mineral oil and silicone oil were analyzed by comparing with the results of virgin ones. For the experiment, an oil bath which can keep constant temperature was constructed to thermally deteriorate the specimens. And transformer materials were put together in the bath according to the their ratio in weight in the pole transformer. And the parameters such as relative permittivety, tan$\delta$ and specific resistance were measured. As a results, the permittivity of silicone oil was higher than that of mineral oil, and its decreasing rate with temperature was also higher. In addition, it was found that tan$\delta$ and specific resistance of virgin and aged oil began to differ at similar temperature.

  • In this study, the solubilization of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) using oil-based emulsion was investigated for aquifer remediation. The micro-sized oil emulsion has large surface areas and buoyancy force, therefore it can be effective in treating DNAPL pool of the aquifer without downward migration of DNAPLs. The emulsion was prepared using silicone oil and mechanical homogenization. And the prepared emulsion had micro-sized similar distribution: 99 % in number and 80 % in volume were less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As target pollutants, trichloroethylene and 1, 2 dichlorobenzene were selected. All of used DNAPLs were solubilized successfully in oil-based emulsion. Even at low oil percentage, emulsion showed good solubility against pollutants. Therefore, the remediation using oil-based emulsion was considered as an effective alternative in dealing with DNAPLs of the aquifer.

  • This paper reports on the evaluation of weathering resistance, tracking test and salt-fog of various kinds of cycloaliphatic epoxy systems. It was found that UV irradiation induced the loss of hydrophobic level due to the chain scission attack at the surface. It could be seen that samples containing an UV absorbent/antioxidant and a silicone oil additive knave a good performance in weathering ageing, whereas ATH filled ones have high resistance against tracking failure than others. Under salt-fog test, specimens mixed with silicone oil could suppress leakage current development. It was thought that silicone oil mixed into cycloaliphatic epoxy system could lead to lower the surface energy and to retain hydrophobic properties for a long time, which are desirable for outdoor performances.

  • As the size of mechanical components decreases, capillary forces and surface tension become increasingly significant. A major problem in maintaining high reliability of these small components is that of large frictional forces due to capillary action and surface tension. Unlike the situation with macro-scale systems, liquid lubrication cannot be used to reduce friction of micro-scale components because of the excessive capillary and drag forces. In this work, the feasibility of using evaporation to coat a thin film of organic lubricant on a solid surface was investigated with the aim of reducing friction. Petroleum and silicone oils were used as lubricants to coat a silicon substrate. It was found that friction could be significantly reduced and, furthermore, that the effectiveness of this method was strongly dependent on the coating conditions.

  • In this study, dimethyl silicone oil and liquid paraffin were combined and subsequently emulsified; the resulting mixture was innovatively incorporated into desulfurized gypsum to resolve its drawback of a poor water resistance. The waterproof mechanism of the composite emulsion and liquid paraffin emulsion with mass fractions of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% were investigated. The effect of the desulfurized gypsum on the waterproof performance and basic mechanical properties were also investigated. The configuration of the composite waterproofing agent was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR. The results showed that, compared with the traditional liquid paraffin emulsion-based waterproofing agent, the softening coefficient of the silicone oil paraffin composite emulsion-based water-repellent agent was increased by 60% and attained a value of 0.89. Combined with the waterproof mechanism and microscope morphology analysis of gypsum hydration products, the improvement in the water resistance of water resistance was primarily attributed to the formation of a silicone hydrophobic membrane between the crystals of the gypsum block; this ensured that water could not penetrate the crystal.

  • In this study, we developed a fiber-optic temperature sensor (FOTS) based on a silicone oil and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) to apply the measurement of a coolant leakage in the nuclear power plant. The sensing probe of the FOTS consists of a silicone oil, a stainless steel cap, a FC terminator, and a single mode optical fiber. Fresnel reflection arising at the interface between the silicone oil and the single mode optical fiber in the sensing probe is changed by varying the refractive index of the silicone oil according to the temperature. Therefore, we measured the optical power of the light signals reflected from the sensing probe. The measurable temperature range of the FOTS using a Cu-coated silica fiber is from $70^{\circ}C$ to $340^{\circ}C$ and the maximum operation temperature of the FOTS is sufficient for usage at the secondary system in the nuclear power plant.
