  • The densification behavior and strength of sintered reaction bonded silicon nitrides (SRBSN) that contain $Lu_2O_3-SiO_2$ additives were improved by the addition of fine Si powder. Dense specimens (relative density: 99.5%) were obtained by gas-pressure sintering (GPS) at $1850^{\circ}C$ through the addition of fine Si. In contrast, the densification of conventional specimens did not complete at $1950^{\circ}C$. The fine Si decreased the onset temperature of shrinkage and increased the shrinkage rate because the additive helped the compaction of green bodies and induced the formation of fine $Si_3N_4$ particles after nitridation and sintering at and above $1600^{\circ}C$. The amount of residual $SiO_2$ within the specimens was not strongly affected by adding fine Si powder because most of the $SiO_2$ layer that had formed on the fine Si particles decomposed during nitridation. The maximum strength and fracture toughness of the specimens were 991 MPa and $8.0MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • This study presents the carburization process for recycling sludge, which was formed during silicon wafer machining. The sludge used in the carburization process is a mixture of silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) with iron as an impurity, which originates from the machine. Additionally, the sludge contains cutting oil, a fluid with high viscosity. Therefore, the sludge was dried before carburization to remove organic matter. The dried sludge was washed by acid cleaning to remove the iron impurity and subsequently carburized by heat treatment under vacuum to form the SiC powder. The ratio of silicon to SiC in the sludge was varied depending on the sources and thus carbon content was adjusted by the ratio. With increasing SiC content, the carbon content required for SiC formation increased. It was demonstrated that substoichiometric SiCx (x<1) was easily formed when the carbon content was insufficient. Therefore, excess carbon is required to obtain a pure SiC phase. Moreover, size reduction by high-energy milling had a beneficial effect on the suppression of SiCx, forming the pure SiC phase.

  • To develop a high capacity lithium secondary battery, a new approach to anode material synthesis is required, capable of producing an anode that exceeds the energy density limit of a carbon-based anode. This research synthesized carbon nano silicon composites as an anode material for a secondary battery using the RF thermal plasma method, which is an ecofriendly dry synthesis method. Prior to material synthesis, a silicon raw material was mixed at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 wt% based on the carbon raw material in a powder form, and the temperature change inside the reaction field depending on the applied plasma power was calculated. Information about the materials in the synthesized carbon nano silicon composites were confirmed through XRD analysis, showing carbon (86.7~52.6 %), silicon (7.2~36.2 %), and silicon carbide (6.1~11.2 %). Through FE-SEM analysis, it was confirmed that the silicon bonded to carbon was distributed at sizes of 100 nm or less. The bonding shape of the silicon nano particles bonded to carbon was observed through TEM analysis. The initial electrochemical charging/discharging test for the 40 wt% silicon mixture showed excellent electrical characteristics of 1,517 mAh/g (91.9 %) and an irreversible capacity of 133 mAh/g (8.1 %).

  • The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for decoration of glass surface has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials such as glass, silicon and ceramics, capable of producing micro structures larger than 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In this study, we introduced oblique powder blasting, and investigated the effect of the impacting angle of particles, the scanning times and the stand-off distance on the surface roughness and the weight-loss rate of samples with no mask, and the wall profile and overetching of samples with different mask pattern in powder blasting of soda-lime glass. The varying parameters were the different impact angles between 50$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$, scanning times of nozzle up to 40 and the stand-off distances 70mm and 100mm. The widths of mask pattern were 0.2mm, 0.5mm and 1mm. The powder was alumina sharp particles, WA #600. The mass flow rate of powder during the erosion test was fixed constant at 175g/min and the blasting pressure of powder at 0.2Mpa.

  • Reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) is a SiC-based composite ceramic fabricated by the infiltration of molten silicon into a skeleton of SiC particles and carbon, in order to manufacture a ceramic body with full density. RBSC has been widely used and studied for many years in the SiC field, because of its relatively low processing temperature for fabrication, easy use in forming components with a near-net shape, and high density, compared with other sintering methods for SiC. A radiant tube is one of the most commonly employed ceramics components when using RBSC materials in industrial fields. In this study, the mechanical strengths of commercial RBSC tubes with different sizes are evaluated using 3-point flexural and C-ring tests. The size scaling law is applied to the obtained mechanical strength values for specimens with different sizes. The discrepancy between the flexural and C-ring strengths is also discussed.

  • The possibility to use powder consisting of fullerite microcrystallines as a device sensitive to the external axial mechanical load is considered. We suppose that the change of conductivity of fullerite microcrystalline powder as a function of external mechanical stress will be useful for the creation of nanoscale devices of sensor electronics. This new effect based on changing of intermolecular distance between fullerene molecules due to the action of external mechanical force, which can change the distance between fullerene molecules because of weak van der Waals interaction exists. The founded effect is quite linear and sensitive to external mechanical stress is better then in well-known pressure transducers is based on silicon technology.

  • The effect of bedding on the microstructure of $Si_3N_4$ added with ultra-fine SiC was investigated. The bedding and the addition of ultra-fine SiC effectively inhibited grain growth of $Si_3N_4$ matrix grain. The microstructures of the specimens sintered with bedding powder consisted of fine-grains as compared with the specimens sintered without bedding powder. In addition, the grain size and the difference of grain size between the specimens sintered with bedding and without bedding was reduced with increasing SiC content. Some ultra-fine SiC particles were trapped in the $Si_3N_4$ grains growed. The number of SiC particles trapped in the $Si_3N_4$ grains increased with increasing the grain growth. When ultra-fine SiC particles were added in the $Si_3N_4$ ceramics, the strength was improved but the toughness was decreased, which was considered to be resulted from the decrease of the grain size.

  • Eventhough Fe-6.5 wt.% Si alloy shows excellent magnetic properties, magnetic components made of the alloy are not totally because of its extremely low ductility. In order to overcome this demerit of alloy, 6.7 wt.% Si alloy powders were produced by gas atomization and then post-processed to form magnetic cores. By doing so, the total core loss could be minimized by reducing both hysteresis and eddy current loss. From our experiments, we were able to achive a core loss of $390mW/cm^3$ at 0.1 T and 50 kHz through proper processes and a permeability $\mu_{eff}$ of 68 at low frequency.

  • This study aims to design the high-capacity vol-oxidizer using simulated fuels instead of spent nuclear fuels. Simulated fuels are fabricated by blending tungsten powder with silicon carbide powder, and thereafter, paraffin coating covers simulated fuels to increase their strength. An oxidation experiment using simulated fuels have been carried out in order to analyze oxidation characteristics similar to spent fuels. After oxidation, simulated fuels were almost oxidized to be powders. Increased volume of simulated fuels approached to spent fuels. These results can be utilized as important informations for designing a high-capacity vol-oxidizer.

  • High purity $\beta$-SiC powders were synthesized using sol-gel processing. TEOS and phenol resin were used as the starting material for the silicon source and carbon source, respectively. The process turned out to be capable of producing high purity SiC powder purity degree with 99.98 %. However, it was difficult to control the shape and size of $\beta$-SiC powders synthesized by sol-gel process. In this study, $\beta$-SiC powder with size of $1{\sim}5$ um an 30 nm were used as the seeds for $\beta$-SiC to control the $\beta$-SiC powder morphology. It was found that $\beta$-SiC powder seeds was effective to increase the powder average size of synthesized $\beta$-SiC using sol-gel process by acting as the preferred growing sites for $\beta$-SiC.
