  • In this paper, we demonstrate a Non-Foster matching method for an electrically small antenna to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of communication link. For the experiment, we used a general FM antenna whose resonance frequency is about 52-57 MHz and a floating type Linvill negative impedance converter(NIC)-based circuit as a Non-Foster matching element. By implementing the Non-Foster circuit to cover FM band, we can achieve a wide bandwidth matching covers 40-200 MHz. Our measurement shows 3-7 dB improvement of SNR for the same bandwidth though there are several spikes which means no improvement of SNR in the band.

  • Degradation is occurred in the process of the signal transmission in the image processing system due to various reasons. Degradation is noise addition in the image signal and the representative one to cause degradation is salt and pepper noise. Therefore, image restoring filter was suggested in this article to apply and process weighted value by the changes of each directional pixel upon breakdown of local mask with 8 directions in order to restore the damaged image in the environment of salt and pepper noise. In addition, peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) was used to compare the existing method as the objective determinant standard of the improvement effect.

  • A narrow loop noise bandwidth method is desirable to reduce the error of raw measurements due to the thermal noise. However, it degrades the performance of GPS initial synchronization such as mean acquisition time. And it restricts the loop noise bandwidth to a fixed value determined by the lower bound of the allowable range of carrier-to-noise power ratio, so that it is difficult to optimally track GPS signal. In order to make up for the weak points of the fixed-type narrow loop noise bandwidth method and simultaneously minimize the error of code and carrier measurements, this paper proposes a stepwise-type adaptive bandwidth algorithm for DGPS reference receivers. In this paper, it is shown that the proposed adaptive bandwidth algorithm can provide more accurate measurements than those of the fixed-type narrow loop noise bandwidth method, in view of analyzing the simulation results between two signal tracking algorithms. This paper also carries out sensitivity analysis of the proposed adaptive bandwidth algorithm due to the estimation uncertainty of carrier-to-noise power ratio. Finally the analysis results are verified by the experiment using GPS simulator.

  • The Signal -to- Noise Ratio of delta modulation for a fi rEt -order Gauss -Markov signal is derived and an approximate expreession of SND is discussed, in the case that only granular noise arises. Cross covariance of input and error signals are negligible when the adjacent correlation of input signal is larger than the difference between the adjacent correlation and the prediction coefficient of local decoder. The approximately derived SNR is available for any value of adjacent correlation.

  • The Instrumental Variable Method(IVM), modified from least square algorithm, is applied to parameter identification of a noise contaminated bearing test rig. The signal to noise ratio included in Frequency Response Function(FRF) can cause significant errors in parameter identification. Therefore, among several candidates of parameter identification method, results of the applied IVM were compared with noise-contaminated least square method. This study shows that the noise-contaminated least square method can have indonsistent accuracy depending on the degree of noise level, while the IVM has robuster performance to signal to noise ratio than least square method.

  • This paper is for investigation of the noise reduction effect all 20 filters by combining Low Pass Filter(LPF) 5 kinds, High Pass Filter(HPF) 4 kinds, Median Filter(MF) 11 kinds. Noise is added to reduce noise and minimize the quality degradation in medical imaging system. We also compared Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR), Mean Square Error(MSE) for all the combinations of different filters. As a result, noise decrease appeared in the LPF3*3#1 + HPF3*3#1 + Vertical3*1 of highest filter. We confirmed noise reduction effect by applying the proposed filter combination in many fields of medical imaging applications.

  • In wireless communications, knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio is required in diverse communication applications. In this paper, we derive the variance of the maximum likelihood estimator in the data-aided and non-data-aided schemes for determining the optimal shrinkage factor. The shrinkage factor is usually the constant that is multiplied by the unbiased estimate and it increases the bias slightly while considerably decreasing the variance so that the overall mean squared error decreases. The closed-form biased estimators for binary-phase-shift-keying and quadrature phase-shift-keying systems are then obtained. Simulation results show that the mean squared error of the proposed method is lower than that of the maximum likelihood method for low and moderate signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

  • In this paper, we used the inter-bit noise detection method in order to reduce the effects of noise light in a visible light identification system that uses a visible LED as a carrier source. A visible light identification system consists of a reader and a transponder. When the enable signal from the reader is detected, the transponder encodes the response data in RZ(Return-to-Zero) bit stream and sends response signal by modulating a visible LED. The reader detects the response signal mixed with noise light, samples the noise voltage in each blank low time between data bits of the RZ signal, and recovers the original data by subtracting the sampled noise from the received signal. In experiments, we improved the signal-to-noise ratio by 20dB using the inter-bit noise detection method.

  • In this paper, we present a QRS-complex detection algorithm to calculate an accurate heartbeat and clearly recognize irregular rhythm from ECG signals. The conventional Pan-Tompkins algorithm brings false QRS detection in the derivative when QRS and noise signals have similar instant variation. The proposed algorithm uses amplitude differences in 7 adjacent samples to detect QRS-complex which has the highest amplitude variation. The calculated amplitude is cubed to dominate QRS-complex and the moving average method is applied to diminish the noise signal's amplitude. Finally, a decision rule with a threshold value is applied to detect accurate QRS-complex. The calculated signals with Pan-Tompkins and proposed algorithms were compared by signal-to-noise ratio to evaluate the noise reduction degree. QRS-complex detection performance was confirmed by sensitivity and the positive predictive value(PPV). Normal ECG, muscle noise ECG, PVC, and atrial fibrillation signals were achieved which were measured from an ECG simulator. The signal-to-noise ratio difference between Pan-Tompkins and the proposed algorithm were 8.1, 8.5, 9.6, and 4.7, respectively. All ratio of the proposed algorithm is higher than the Pan-Tompkins values. It indicates that the proposed algorithm is more robust to noise than the Pan-Tompkins algorithm. The Pan-Tompkins algorithm and the proposed algorithm showed similar sensitivity and PPV at most waveforms. However, with a noisy atrial fibrillation signal, the PPV for QRS-complex has different values, 42% for the Pan-Tompkins algorithm and 100% for the proposed algorithm. It means that the proposed algorithm has superiority for QRS-complex detection in a noisy environment.
