  • In this paper, we investigate the signal to noise ratio (SNR) estimation performance of Cross quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which is being used for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), very high bit rate digital subscriber line (VDSL), and digital video broadcasting - cable (DVB-C), and has been found to be useful in adaptive modulation and blind equalization. At first, the symbol error rate (SER) performance of Cross QAM is analyzed in Rayleigh fading channel. Then we suggest error vector magnitude (EVM) based SNR estimation utilizing the selected constellation points having different types of decision region from one another, and verify that SNR estimation performance of each points have different performance pattern through simulation. From the simulation results, it has been found that when suggested selected constellation points are used for SNR estimation in Cross QAM, estimation performance is enhanced in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel or Ricean fading channel.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient symbol mapping method based on LLR (log-likelihood ratio) statistic for HARQ employing CoRe (constellation rearrangement) with 64QAM. The signal constellations for 64QAM with limited number of retransmissions are selected by the proposed mapping rule. Then we determine the transmission order of selected constellations. The proposed scheme reduces the performance deviation between transmit symbols so as to improve the system performance. Through simulation results, the proposed and existing CoRe mapping methods are compared with respect to error rate and throughput in MIMO-OFDM system over fading channel and we confirm the applicability of the proposed scheme in practical wireless communications environment.

  • Russia recently began broadcasting the SDCM signal in order to provide SBAS service for the civil aviation in the Russian territory using its own geostationary satellites. The service coverage of the SDCM geostationary satellite, LUCH-5A and LUCH-5B, includes Korea peninsula, where the test signal from the pseudo random number (PRN) 140 is received. This paper shows that the position accuracy at the Chulwon GNSS site is improved to 0.8749 m (horizontal) and 0.9589 mm (vertical) by applying the received SDCM message to the RINEX data. Considering that the SDCM augments both GPS and GLONASS, the performance of multi-constellation SBAS was compared to that of GPS-only SBAS, and APV-I availability was improved by decreasing the protection level about 30 %. From the results, we can expect that the mult-constellation SBAS can contribute to the performance enhancement of the future KASS.

  • In this paper, we propose a variant of the QRM-MLD signal detection method that is used for spatially multiplexed multiple antenna system. The original QRM-MLD signal detection method combines the QR decomposition with the M-algorithm, thereby significantly reduces the prohibitive hardware complexity of the ML signal detection method, still achieving a near ML performance. When the number of transmitter antennas and/or constellation size are increased to achieve higher bit rate, however, its increased complexity makes the hardware implementation challenging. In an effort to overcome this drawback of the original QRM-MLD, a number of variants were proposed. A most strong variant among them, in our opinion, is the ranking method, in which the constellation points are ranked and computation is performed for only highly ranked constellation points, thereby reducing the required complexity. However, the variant using the ranking method experiences a significant performance degradation, when compared with the original QRM-MLD. In this paper, we point out the reasons of the performance degradation, and we propose a novel variant that overcomes the drawbacks. We perform a set of computer simulations to show that the proposed method achieves a near performance of the original QRM-MLD, while its computational complexity is near to that of the QRM-MLD with ranking method.

  • This paper is concerned with the performance comparison of CR-CMA (Coordinate Reduction-CMA) and CM-CMA (Constellation Matching-Constant Modulus Algorithm) that is used for improving the convergence characteristic and residual intersymbol interference which are used as the performance index for an adaptive equalizer. The equalizer is used to reduce the distortion caused by the intersymbol interference on the wireless and the wired band-limited channel, and the blind method which does not need for extra bandwidth by the training sequence of digital code are researched. Recently, by using the merit of simple operation in the CMA, the performance improvement is obtained by the modifying the cost function of it. In this paper, the new algorithm, CR-CMA and CM-CMA, the performance analysis are performed and compared by computer simulation. The CR-CMA has a superior equalization characteristics in the recovered constellation, convergence speed and residual intersymbol interference than the CM-CMA by computer simulation.

  • For blind equalization, it is necessary to open an eye pattern quickly in the early stage of equalization, after that it is important to lower an error level of equalizer output signal. This paper discusses coarse error estimation using signal points specifically determined and fine error estimation using original signal constellation, and proposes two suggestions for how to take advantage of the two error estimation methods. The two error estimates, respectively, are effective to quickly open an eye pattern in the state of eye pattern closed, or to lower the level of an error in the steady-state after the eye pattern opening. Two blind equalization algorithms are proposed and their performances are compared, which select one of the two error estimates depending on the state of convergence of the equalizer, or combine two errors weightedly according to the relative reliabilities of the two error estimates, and calculate the new error.

  • We propose two new blind LMS and MMSE algorithms called projection-based least mean square (PB-LMS) and projection-based minimum mean square error (PB-MMSE) for smart antennas. Both algorithms employ the finite constellation property of digital signal to transform the conventional LMS and MMSE algorithms into blind algorithms. Computer simulations were carried out in the AWGN channel and Rayleigh fading channel with AWGN in CDMA environment to verify the performance of the two proposed algorithms.

  • A novel approach for frequency-tripling vector signal generation via balanced detection without precoding and optical filter is proposed. The scheme is mainly utilizing an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DPQPSK) modulator. In the DPQPSK modulator, one QPSK modulator is driven by an RF signal to generate high-order optical sidebands, while the other QPSK modulator is modulated by I/Q data streams to produce baseband vector signal as an optical carrier. After that, a frequency-tripling 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16QAM) vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal can be obtained by balanced detection. The proposed scheme can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The results show that, a 4 Gbaud baseband 16QAM vector signal can be generated at 30 GHz by frequency-tripling. After 10 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission, the constellation and eye diagrams of the generated vector signal perform well and a bit-error-rate (BER) below than 1e-3 can be achieved.

  • In this paper the system performance degradation resulting from nonlinear transmitter power amplifier which is essential to increase the efficiency is analysed in a CDMA system. The power amplifier is modeled by its AM-AM, AM-PM characteristics. The effects of power amplifier's nonlinearity such as intersymbol interference, phase distonion on the RF system performance were visualized by examining the distorted time domain waveforms, signal vector constellation. And through the investigation of the power spectrum density of the transmitted signal, spectral regrowth or sideband regrowth which is result from amplitude distortion can be seen. All these characteristics result in BER performance degradation due to other user interferences and intersymbol interference. The analysis technique described here applies not only to power amplifier but also to any other nonlinear components such as mixers and switches. Also the effects of adjacent channel interference and supurious emission can be analysed between different systems.

  • In this paper, a method to design 3-dimensional (3-D) cross-lattice signal constellations with increased compactness is presented and analyzed. Here, the symbols located at the outermost sides in the conventional lattice constellation are moved symmetrically to fill in empty sides and sunken corners. While the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) among adjacent symbols remains unchanged, the presented cross-lattice constellations have 3~5% reduced average power and upto 25% reduced total volume as compared with the conventional ones. Due to the increase compactness, average power of the new 3-D constellations is lower than that of the conventional ones. As a result, computer simulation verifies that the presented cross-lattice constellations can improve symbol error performance of a digital transmission system about 0.4 [dB]. Hence, the proposed 3-D cross-lattice constellations are appropriate for low-power and high-quality digital communication systems.
