  • Secondary instability in the flow past two square cylinders in side-by-side arrangements is numerically studied by using a Floquet analysis. The distance between the neighboring faces of the two cylinders (G) is the key parameter which affects the secondary instability under consideration. In this paper, we present the critical Reynolds number for the secondary instability and the corresponding spanwise wave number of the most unstable (or least stable) wave for each G. Our results would shed light on a complete understanding of the onset of secondary instability in the presence of two side-by-side square cylinders.

초경박 도광판을 위한 LED 광-접합기 설계 (LED Light Coupler Design for a Very Thin Light Guide)

  • A design of a light coupler between a LED and a very thin light guide (0.2mm thickness) is presented. Due to the light guide's very thin thickness, conventional light couplings between LEDs and light guides do not provide enough coupling efficiency. We investigate two different coupling methods: side coupling using a complex-shaped lens and bottom coupling using a grating. This paper presents a draft design of the first approach which couples light from 0.4mm LED to 0.2mm light guide without significant losses.

  • 3D microstructures with different side-wall angles and different scales are fabricated by both methods of inclined exposure and rear-side exposure at each of selected areas on a same substrate. Conventional methods of inclined exposure are used to make side-walls with a same inclined angle on one substrate and to get a scale error due to front-side exposure through thick photoresist layer, But, by using the proposed method, we are able to fabricate 3D microstructures on a same substrate with various side-wall angles and accurate dimensions as the original design. In the rear-side exposure, UV exposure light reflects from the chromium mask pattern after passing through the thick photoresist layer, resulting in fabrication of well-defined, inclined 3D structures inside the thick photoresist layer.

300-W-class Side-pumped Solar Laser

  • To realize uniform side pumping of solar lasers and improve their output power, a solar concentrating system based on off-axis parabolic mirrors is proposed. Four identical off-axis parabolic mirrors with focal length of 1,000 mm are toroidally arranged as the primary concentrator. Four two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (2D-CPCs) are designed as a secondary concentrator to further compress the focused spot induced by the parabolic mirrors, and the focused light is then homogenized by four rectangular diffusers and provides uniform pumping for a laser-crystal rod to achieve solar laser emission. Simulation results show that the solar power received by the laser rod, uniformity of the light spot, and output power of the solar laser are 7,872.7 W, 98%, and 351.8 W respectively. This uniform pumping configuration and concentrator design thus provide a new means for developing high-power side-pumped solid-state solar lasers.

  • 과학기술과 항해기기의 발달에 맞추어 항로표지의 지원기능도 변해야 하므로 이에 대한 역할 재정립이 필요하다. 항계내에서도 늘어가는 배경광에 대한 대책 및 항계내의 항로를 가로지르는 교량과 선박과의 충돌방지를 위하여 교량의 시인성 개선방안이 필요하다. 항로표지의 설치원칙과 설치기법 부두와 교량 시설물의 접현 등화를 이용하여 이들의 시인성을 개선하는 방안 및 교량부근에서 선박이 바람과 조류 등 외력에 의하여 표류하는 정도를 인식하여 교각과의 충돌방지에 도움이 되는 중시등화의 시설 등에 대하여 이용자의 시각으로 기술한다.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the direction for creating the beautiful and lively space of the reli-gious architecture as a consquence of trying to under-stand the forms of control of the light and the symbolic meaning of the production in the interior space of the re-ligious architecture. The scope of this study has been limited to the natural light and to the establishment of theoretical background by analyzing the essence and method of space formation by the light in a side view of development and psychology and establishing the concept related to the architectur-al space formation of the light as well as researching and analyzing the meaning and the method of production of the light. And at the same time the conclusion has been induced as a guide of verifying theoretical background by analyz-ing the practical use related to the control and the pro-duction of the light through the spot research and the referential materials in a way of case research into 5 do-mestic religious architectures as the subject of research.

It analyzed the conversion ratio which it follows in the mesh.

  • We present a front-side micromachined thermopile with high sensitivity in the 3-5${\mu}m$ window, and discuss its application to a novel non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) $CO_2$ gas sensor with a light source emitting collimated light. The micromachined thermopile shows a measured sensitivity of 30 mV/W and a $D^*$ of $0.3{\times}10^8cm^{\surd}Hz/W$. Using this newly fabricated thermopile, we also have successfully developed a small, sensitive NDIR $CO_2$ detector module for accurate air quality monitoring systems in energy-saving building and automotive applications. The novel sample cavity comprising specular reflectors around the light bulb is configured to uniformly emit collimated light into the entrance aperture of the cavity in order to enhance the sensitivity of NDIR $CO_2$ detector.

Optical Vehicle to Vehicle Communications for Autonomous Mirrorless Cars

  • Autonomous cars require the integration of multiple communication systems for driving safety. Many carmakers unveil mirrorless concept cars aiming to replace rear and sideview mirrors in vehicles with camera monitoring systems, which eliminate blind spots and reduce risk. This paper presents optical vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for autonomous mirrorless cars. The flicker-free light emitting diode (LED) light sources, providing illumination and data transmission simultaneously, and a high speed camera are used as transmitters and a receiver in the OCC link, respectively. The rear side vehicle transmits both future action data and vehicle type data using a headlamp or daytime running light, and the front vehicle can receive OCC data from the camera that replaces side mirrors so as not to prevent accidents while driving. Experimental results showed that action and vehicle type information were sent by LED light sources successfully to the front vehicle's camera via the OCC link and proved that OCC-based V2V communications for mirrorless cars can be a viable solution to improve driving safety.

피터 쥼터의 썸 발즈에 나타난 감성 디자인 접근에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Emotional design approach in the Therme Vals designed by Peter Zumthor)

  • The Therme Vals is a hotel and spa which combines a complete sensory experience designed by Peter Zumthor. This study aims to find emotional design approaches of the Therme Vals through references, observation from site visit, interview and discussion related to this topic. This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The study observed the emotional design characteristics of the Therme Vals through space approach, aesthetic and experiential sides. For space approach side, emotional experience in gradual process to approach the space was mentioned, for aesthetic side, mystical combination of light, stone and water was observed, for experiential side, 5 senses experience and space programing for adjusting the density of the space were observed. This study found that the spa has the quality of spiritual, soul-touching delight like religious experience. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, the ritual of bathing-all these notions were explained in Peter Zumthor's construction details. In the result of the interview and discussion, people love the space and praised it highly for the emotional design regardless of space experience, age, sex or ethnicity. Emotional design approaches based on human nature, materiality, and memory of the places is more powerful than other emotional design ideas with technical devices, special themes, digital effects, vivid colors and shapes.
