A Study on the Ship's Performance of T.S. HANBADA(II) - The Evaluation of Boarding Comfort with Vertical Acceleration - (실습선 한바다호의 운항성능에 관한 연구(II) - 상하가속도를 이용한 승선감 평가 -)

  • When a vessel is underway in a heavy weather, passengers and crew suffer from seasickness caused by ship motions such as pitch, heave or roll, or all combined Sickness induces drowsiness, dizziness, headache, stomachache etc, in extreme conditions, they are met with a serious trouble which is physiologically unrecoverable. It results in weakening of spiritual activities or making errors from decrease of motivation, dropping off skills, poor recognition and poor judgement. In this paper, it was examined the international standards concerning the occurrence of sickness and the execution of works, also evaluated the boarding comfort by conducting several times of questionnaire on cadets boarding on the training ship HANBADA As a result, it was confirmed that the main factor of occurring the sickness was the vertical acceleration and the level was more than 0.2g. Also, it was presented the way how to reduce the sickness by changing the speed and/or course in relation to the encounter period.

  • This study approaches the subject of satisfaction and persistent use intention based on presence based on virtual reality (VR). VR presence, user characteristic, and VR sickness, content satisfaction and system satisfaction, and continued use intention through this of 569 men and women commissioned by the survey agency were investigated. In the content of the study, the constituent factors of VR presence, an independent variable, were set as realism, immersion, and interaction. The user characteristics were set as the individual 's propensity to innovate, the degree of immersion, and the experience of using VR. VR Presence, User Characteristics, VR Sickness of Intention of Continuous Usage were set as research problems and models. Eight hypotheses were adopted in the analysis of the research problem applying the structural equation modeling (SEM) model. In conclusion, this study suggests that content satisfaction, which has the greatest influence on VR content satisfaction and persistent intention, is suggested.

Morbidity Rate and Medical Care Utilization of Sailors during the Voyage (항해중 선원의 상병 및 치료양상)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out morbidity rate and utilization pattern of medical services of sailors on a voyage. The subjects of this study were 470 sailors who are sailors' trainee and safety-trainee for embarkation in a ship. Data were collected by means of personal survey conducted from September 5 to October 30, 1988. The subjects were sailed 12.6 months on the average. During the voyage, 49.4% of the sailors had sickness more than once, and 24.7% was unable to work more than a day because of illness. The average monthly morbidity rate was 85.7 per 1,000 and the monthly prevalence rate of disease that was unable to work more than a day was 21.2 per 1,000. The sailors of 40-49 years old had the highest morbidity rate of 103.6 per 1,000/month. The number of days activity restricted due to sickness was 93.4 days per 1,000 persons, and the average duration of illness was 11.2 days per sickness. The proportion of treatment days to sickness days was 48.8%. Considering morbidity unable to work more than a day, the number of those who had traumatic injury were 17.2%, which revealed the highest rate, influenza or cold were 15.5%, and the digestive disease 11.2%. Less than half(42.1%) of patients were treated with medicine kept in the cabin. However, 2.1% was transferred by helicopter and 29.5% was treated at hospitals or clinics in nearby port. In the cabin, 67.4% of patients was cured completely.

The Influence of Uirimchualyo & Its Sequel on Donguibogam - Focused on throat sickness - ("의림촬요(醫林撮要)"와 "의림촬요속집(醫林撮要續集)"이 "동의보감(東醫寶鑑)"의 형성에 끼친 영향 - 인후질환(咽喉疾患)을 중심으로 -)

  • Some researchers who once studied Uirimchualyo have paid good attention to the connection between Donguibogam & Uirimchualyo because of their similarity. So, after reviewing the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, in terms of its editing purpose and the list of contents, especially focused on throat sickness, here I report on the conclusions I come to. Firstly, the Sequel of Uirimchualyo was a monumental edition in concert with the enthronement of Kwanghaegun, and printed at demand of new medical knowledge, which was required to add to the existing Uirimchualyo, written by best-noted doctor, Yang Yesoo, and in need of simpler medical textbook to help people's recovery from the damage of Japanese invasion in the year of Imjin & Jeongyoo. Secondly, all the contents read in the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, were quoted from Kogumuigam, compiled by Kong Shin, Manbyonghoichun, edited by Kong Jeonghyun, Dangaeshim bupbuyo, published by Bang Kwang, and Uihakipmun, edited by Lee Cheon. Thirdly, The reason of similarity between Uirimchualyo and Donguibogam is that the Sequel of Uirimchualyo was made by adding new medical knowledge to the existing Uirimchualyo, and that many of contents of the Sequel of Uirimchualyo were quoted in Donguibogam. Fourthly, regarding throat sickness, medical knowledge on acute fever was supplemented in the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, and the emergency medical treatment methodology like "blow-in-throat" was newly introduced. This treatment is worth being employed to treat acute suffocation with swollen throat in modern acute-infection sicknesses. Fifthly, the Sequel of Uirimchualyo made up for brief description of the existing Uirimchualyo, offered more convenience of users compared with too overscaled Hyangyakjipseongbang & Uibangryuchui, and was more complete than Kookupbang which was loose, incomplete, and sometimes risky. And it took firm hold before Donguibogam, and eventually made a great contribution toward Donguibogam.

Evaluation of Scopolamine Patch Pharmacotherapy for Motion Sickness in S. Korean

  • Scopolamine patch is an effective anticholinergic and antiemetic agent for motion sickness in S. Korea. Since this medication is Over The Counter (OTC) medication and may cause serious side effects when misused. Therefore, we evaluate the safety and efficacy for scopolamine patch in this study. We selected and surveyed total 43 patients who purchased scopolamine patch from three different pharmacies located at S and C Express Bus terminals and P Port at Seoul, Cheongju, and Busan. In the result, 11 patients (8${\sim}$15 year old:25.6%) were correctly used scopolamine patch with a children dose and 2 patients were misused. 26 (15${\sim}$60 year old: 60.4%) and 4 (over 6o year old: 9.3%) patients were correctly used with a adult dose. 33 patients (69.9%)answered that they knew the directions well how to use scopolamine patch correctly. Only 24.2% (n=8) patients learned the directions by pharmacist's consultation. Most patients (45 frequencies with duplicate counts) had some experienced side effects and among those drowsiness is the most common one. In conclusion, scopolamine patch as a non-prescription drug (OTC) should be monitored by pharmacist with correct drug consultation.

  • For developing automotive parts and telematics devices the real car test often shows limitation because it needs high cost, much time and has the possibility of the accident. Therefore, a Vehicle Driving Simulator (VDS) instead of the real-car test has been used by some automotive manufactures, research centers, and universities. The VDS is a virtual reality device which makes a human being feel as if one drives a vehicle actually. Unlike actual vehicle, the simulator has limited kinematic workspace and bounded dynamic characteristics. So it is difficult to simulate dynamic motions of a multi-body vehicle model fully. In order to overcome these problems, a washout algorithm which restricts workspace of the simulator within the kinematic limits is needed, and analysis of dynamic characteristics is required also. However, a classical washout algorithm contains several problems such as time delay and generation of wrong motion signal caused by characteristics of filters. Specially, the classical washout algorithm has the simulator sickness when driver hardly turns brakes and accelerates the VDS. In this paper, a new washout algorithm is developed to enhance the motion sensitivity and improve the simulator sickness by using the vehicle tilt signal which is generated in the real time vehicle dynamic model.

A Study on Decrease of Vertical Accelerations due to Changes in Location of the Habitation Division for Training Ship (실습선의 거주위치 변경에 따른 수직가속도 저감에 관한 연구)

  • Research on ship motion and seasickness is recognized as the important research area to ensure the pleasant operative environment in addition to the research of operation safety of ship. In this paper, the motion performance in waves for the training ship Kaya of Pukyong National University is obtained by using the computer program based on Strip Method. To guarantee the pleasant seafaring in ocean, the vertical acceleration of ship motion is calculated according to the habitation division location in the ship. The results of calculation by changes of location of habitation division are compared with the guideline of MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence). The degree of motion sickness is shown and discussed through the comparison between calculated vertical acceleration spectrum and MSI guideline. To improve the safety of ship in motion and the pleasant seafaring in waves, the downtrend of seasickness ratio is needed by the decrease on vertical acceleration of the ship. Through the results in this paper, the relocation of both bridge and accommodation toward the aftship reduced the vertical acceleration and MSI.

An Epidemiological Study on the Decompression Sickness in an Underwater Work (해저작업장(海底作業場)의 감압병(減壓病) 발생(發生)에 대(對)한 역학적(疫學的) 고찰(考察))

  • Forty one male workers employed in an underwater construction field were surveyed in the viewpoints of epidemiological analysis of decompression sickness (caisson's disease). Nineteen out of the entire forty one workers have been, or had been suffering from decompression sickness (as 46.3% of incidence rate) after decompression. The results obtained were as follows: 1. There was a significant relation between duration of work and incidence of disease. 2. Type II (severe type) comprised majority of cases (16 cases, 84.2%) despite any significant correlations were not present between severity types and recompression times. 3. Most frequently cited symptoms were lower limb pain (89.5%), upper limb pain (79.0%), pruritus (68.4%) and so on, however, 10% of patients complained of neurological symptoms. 4. There were not any significant correlations between disease incidence and worker's age or relative body weight.

A Case of Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS) in Elderly Patient (담뱃잎농부병으로 진단된 고령 환자 1례)

  • Green tobacco sickness is an illness caused by dermal exposure to nicotine. The common symptoms of the disease include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, severe general weakness, fluctuations of blood pressure or heartbeat, abdominal cramping, chills, increased sweating, salivation, and difficulty breathing. A 79-year-old female arrived at the emergency room for an evaluation of sudden onset dizziness. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography of the brain did not show any relevant abnormal findings. Four days later, with supportive care, she said that she had harvested green tobacco for six hours on the day of admission and the tobacco harvest was the first time in her life. She sweated excessively during the hot and humid weather and the tobacco leaves were wet from rain the night before. The serum cotinine tested at five days of admission was 16ng/ml. She was diagnosed with acute nicotine poisoning by her clinical symptoms and the half-life of cotinine in the blood.
