This study was conducted to identify the effect of planting date and cultivation method on soybean growth and yield in paddy field. The plant height of soybeans in single cropping(SC) was higher than those in cultivating after barley culture (CB). Considering planting date and cultivation method, plant height tend to be higher in SC with level row cultivation(LR) and in CB with high ridge cultivation(HR). In this SC method, nodule formation in LR was better than in HR, but number of nodules of cv. Hwangkeumkong was highest, regardless of planting date and cultivation method. In the progress of growth stage, leaf areas of all cultivars were distinctively increased in CB than in SC. However, dry weight of top plants and roots in SC was comparably higher than that in CB due to growing periods of the soybeans. In cultivation methods, general type of dry weight of top plants was higher in LR than in HR, however, root dry weight was via verses. Growth responses varied depending on cultivars, cultivation methods, and planting date and these factors affected to shoot root (T/R) ratio. The T/R ratios in LR and SC were higher than those in HR and CB. In R8 stage, number of pods and ripened seed varied depending on cultivars. cv. Hwaeomputkong, which showed early maturing trait, was lowest. However, both yield factors tended to be higher in HR and CB than in LR and SC. The ratios of ripened seeds percentage of cv. Hwangkeumkong and cv. Eunhakong were higher in CB than in SC. However, yields of cv. Daewonkon and cv. Taekwangkong were higher in CB than in SC.
This experiment was carried out at paddy field (commercial silty loam soil) in the southwestern Korea. Pungsannamulkong, a determinate growth habit, was a relatively high yielding and late maturing cultivar, and Hannamkong, a semi determinate growth habit, was a relatively low yielding and early maturing cultivar. Seeds were sowed at two plants and with a planting density of $70{\times}10cm$ on May 26, 2003. Fertilizer was applied prior to planting at a rate of 3.0-3.0-3.4g $(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)\;per\;m^2$ by all basal fertilizations. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. Seed yield was higher in Pungsannamulkong by 362g per $m^2$ than in Hannamkong of 260g per $m^2$ Also, the number of pod, number of seed, and number of seed per pod were greater in Pungsannamulkong than in Hannamkong. The number of leaves per $m^2$ showed similar with two soybean cultivars up to August 24 but thereafter it decreased in Hannamkong. The leaf area up to August 4 increased in Hannamkong higher than in Pungsannamulkong, but after that time, Pungsannamulkong had greater leaf area than Hannamkong. The shoot and leaf dry matter of two soybean cultivars from June 23 to August 4 were similar but thereafter, Pungsannamulkong had a significantly greater than Hannamkong. Crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilate rate (NAR) for Punsannamulkong were relatively higher than Hannamkong but leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf weight (SLW) showed higher in Hannamkong. Most of leaves distributed in the ranges of 80-90cm and 60-70cm from the soil surface in Punsannamulkong and Hannamkong, respectively. Pods of Punsannamulkong ranged 10-80cm from the soil surface and most of pods were distributed at 40-50cm. Photosynthetic rate at the flowering stage showed a significant difference between cultivars in the upper most leaf position. There was no significant difference of the photosynthetic rate at $7^{tn}$ leaf at the flowering stage, and the uppermost and 7th leaf position at the seed development stage between two soybean cultivars.
Indigo crop, Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross is an annual plant containing natural colorant, the blue dye indigo, and local cultivars had been cultivated to produce natural indigo for textile dyeing in Korea since ancient times. Naju No. 2 is a new mass-selected line from the mother population, Naju Local cultivar. In this study, two breeding lines of Naju Local and Naju No. 2, have been cultivated in four different locations, the South regions of Korea, to compare plant growth and yield characteristics between two lines. Naju No. 2 was higher in plant height, and Naju Local has more 1st branches. Naju No. 2 has larger leaf area and higher width/length ratio of leaf, showing the round leaf type as morphological stable character without regional differences. Though there was considerable regional variation in fresh and dry top weight of harvested plant, the significant difference of plant weight between two lines were not shown. The ratio of leaf to total shoot of dry weight of Naju No. 2 was higher than one of Naju Local, indicating that Naju No. 2 has better yielding of colorant which is synthesized mostly in leaf. Naju No. 2 contained more Niram (crude indigo extract) and indigo, and showed much blueness at dyeing of silk using fresh leaves than Naju Local. We concluded that a new line, Naju No. 2 could be a superior cultivar due to having higher leaf yield and better quality of natural colorant than Naju local cultivar.
Crown gall of rose (Rosa hybrida) was observed in greenhouse during 2003-2007. The average disease incidence was up to 38.1 % and was more severe in hydroponic culture as compared to soil culture. The typical gall symptom occurred mainly on the root, crown, or both, and resulted on poor rooting, growth retardation and yield loss. The reduction rate of rooting influenced by crown gall was 57.5% as compared to healthy plants on nursery stock. The location of gall formation in the plant influenced growth vigor resulting in symptoms such as poor shooting. Healthy plants produced 19.1 flowers/$m^2$, while diseased plants produced 9.5 flowers/$m^2$ during the same cultivation period. Moreover, the number of days to flowering was longer for the diseased plants than for healthy plants - 51.2 days and 39.8 days for first harvest, and 60.6 days and 52.1 days for the second harvest, respectively. Conclusively, infection on the basal stem caused serious loss of the number of shoot formation; yield loss of cut flower was 38.7% due to crown gall infection and delay of harvesting time about 8-10 days.
This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of continuous culture and soil texture and their effect on growth and yield of platycodon. The continuous cropping year was treated from 2-years old to 8-years old. The continuous cropping year was correlated with root weight $Y=17.246X+0.95(R^2=0.948^{{\ast}{\ast}{\ast}})$ and root disease incidence rate $Y=12.01X-5.74(R^2=0.946^{{\ast}{\ast}{\ast}})$. The T-N, $P_2O_5$ and MgO content of root were yearly decresed and those of injury roots were higher than those of normal roots. The 2-years old platycodon was treated different soil texture(Loamy sand, Sandy loam, Silt loam, Clay loam). The shoot weight 10.38g, root diameter 1.34cm, root height 16.8cm and root weight 5.46g at silt loam were higher than other soil texture.
Effect of eight different treatments to stimulate germination and of seedling ageson the growth and tuber yields of Liriope platyphlla was carried out in vitro(room temperature)and in vivo(field). Treatments, in vitro, of sulfuric acid(2%), $GA_3$(100ppm), and stratification were most stimulated the germination of L.platyphylla. Among them the stratification was also the most effective for emergence in field and was shortened the days to germination in vitro and in vivo. Plant height and the number of leaves and tillers per plant in the sulfuric acid and the vinyl mulch treatments were the poorest, but those in other treatments were highered without any differences. Seeding of L.platyphylla was taken 66 days to emerge and the growth of that was more decreased than that of the seedlings. The younger seedling, the shorter the day of emergence of a new shoot. The olders were bloomed earlier and more increased the growth than the yongers and the divided seedlings, but the tuber yield was most increased in the 3 years seedling.

Superintendents have been used microbial fertilizers to improve turfgrass growth and quality and to decrease turfgrass diseases in golf course. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of compound fertilizer containing microbe (MF) on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass with turf color index (TCI), chlorophyll index (ChI), root length, turfgrass density, clipping yield and nutrient content. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (21-17-17; CF) as control, compound fertilizer (14-6-17) containing microbe. In pot experiment, TCI and ChI of creeping bentgrass in MF plot were similar to those in CF. But clipping dry weight of MF plot increased by 39.1% compared to that of CF plot. At field experiment applied with MF treatment, TCI, ChI, root length, and nutrient content and uptake of creeping bentgrass were similar to those with CF treatment, but turfgrass density with MF higher about 7.9-15.8% than with CF. These results indicated that the application of MF improved growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by enhancing clipping yield and shoot number.
A field research was conducted to evaluate the effects of inoculation of Rhizobium meliloti and lime application on the early growth of alfalfa, var. Luna, in an acid soil. Alfalfa seeds were inoculated by lime-peat pelleting method with $A_3$ strain isolated from alfalfa roots. Both inoculated and noninoculated seeds were sown in acid soil (pH 5.5) with three levels of lime application (1, 3, 6 ton/ha) on mid-April. Inoculated seeds produced many effective nodules in early stage and increased nitrogen and chlorophyll contents of leaf, consequently stimulating alfalfa growth. Pseudo nodules were found in noninoculated, while they were seldom formed in inoculated. Lime application increased soil pH, plant height, root length, and shoot and root weight. Liming effect on nodulation was significant at first cut, but no longer after then. Both inoculation and liming increased the forage yield of alfalfa. Inoculation and liming of 6 ton/ha together produced the highest yield. As compared to control plot of nitrogen application, the effect of seed inoculation only could be equal to about 120 kg/ha nitrogen application. The total nitrogen contents of forage were little affected by number or weight of nodules and amounts of lime application.
Chinese milkvetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) has been traditionally used as a green manure supplying mineral N and organic matters to soil. In rice-Chinese milkvetch interrelay cropping system, three rice cultivating methods (no-till direct seeding, no-till transplanting, and tillage transplanting) were evaluated for stand reestablishment without reseeding Chinese milkvetch with two cropping times (May 25 and June 4) for two years. Chinese milkvetch incorporated was decomposed rapidly in the first week. Decomposition was fast in topsoil than in subsoil. Natural milkvetch reestablishment (NMR), following harvest of no-till-direct-sown rice was good enough to cover the paddy field in both cropping times, but rice yield of this method was lower than that of transplanted rice on paddy field without milkvetch cultivation. Even though good NMR was secured in no-till rice transplanting, the shoot of milkvetch should be removed before machine-transplanting of rice seedlings. NMR was better in rice cropping at the mid-ripening stage of milkvetch (June 4) than at the late-bloom stage (May 25). Rice yield was higher in tillage transplanting at the mid-ripening stage of milkvetch (June 4) than in the other rice cropping method.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of apex removal at different leaf ages on the growth and yield of broccoli in pinching cultivation. Apex was pinched when 2, 3 or 4 true leaves were spread during nursery bed, and non-pinching was conventional method. The plant height was not different among treatments but the fresh weight was decreased as the pinching days were delayed. The numbers of leaves and lateral shoots were increased compared to those of non-pinching by pinching. Days to central budding were shortended by 3 days when pinched at 2 true leaves spreading stage than those of non-pinching. Central (1st) head weight was heaviest when pinched at the time of 2 true leaves spreading (157g). Total head weight was heaviest when pinched at the time of 2 true leaves spreading (378g), and lowest at 4 true leaves spreading stage (196g). Marketable yields were increased by 48% when pinched at the time of 2 true leaves spreading (1,754kg) as compared with those of non-pinching (1,184kg) and lowest when pinched at the time of 4 true leaves spreading (820kg). Also, first harvest was shortended by 6 days by pinching at 2 true leaves spreading stage.
