Suspension noise from under a passenger car is one of the important factors that impact the perceptual quality for drivers. However, it is difficult to validate this by component level testing in the early stage of development, because suspension noise caused by interaction of the related parts has been found at saleable vehicles late during development or at the manufacturing stage, when many customers have already filed for claims. This study proposed a validation testing under research by the DFSS process that enables reproduction of vehicle level noise by component level testing using a shock absorber with the related parts, such as urethane bumper and top mount. This study also developed a compromised test matrix while analyzing the noise factors through experimental design and analysis of variance to determine what factors can affect noise. Based on this study, we expect that the vehicle level and customer claim can be validated during initial development timing by a more reliable component noise validation test.

In this paper, a hydropneumatic modeling and analysis of a heavy truck cabin air suspension system is presented. Cabin air suspension system is a system which improves ride comfort of a heavy truck and it can reduce vibration between truck frame and cabin. The components of the system, air spring, shock absorber, leveling valve and full cabin system are mathematically modelled using AMESim software. Simulation results of components and full cabin system are compared with experimental data of components and test results of a cabin using 6 axis simulation table. It is found that the simulation results are in good agreements with test results, and the hydropneumatic model can be used well to predict dynamic characteric of heavy truck cabin air suspension system.
In this paper, the electromagnetic damper (EMD), which is composed of a permanent-magnet rotary DC motor, a ball screw and a nut, is considered to be analyzed as a semi-active damper. The main objective pursued in the paper is to study the two degrees of freedom (DOF) model of the semi-active electromagnetic suspension system (SAEMSS) performance and energy regeneration controlled by on-off and continuous damping control strategies. The nonlinear equations of the SAEMSS must therefore be extracted. The effects of the EMD characteristics on ride comfort, handling performance and road holding for the passive electromagnetic suspension system (PEMSS) are first analyzed and damping control strategies effects on the SAEMSS performance and energy regeneration are investigated next. The results obtained from the simulation show that the SAEMSS provides better performance and more energy regeneration than the PEMSS. Moreover, the results reveal that the on-off hybrid control strategy leads to better performance in comparison with the continuous skyhook control strategy, however, the energy regeneration of the continuous skyhook control strategy is more than that of the on-off hybrid control strategy (except for on-off skyhook control strategy).

This paper develops a computer model for estimating the bump characterisitcs of a cat)over type large-sized truck. The truck is composed of front and rear suspension systems, a frame, a cab, and ten tires. The computer model is developed using MSC.ADAMS. A shock absorber, a rubber bush, and a leaf spring affect a lot on the dynamic characteristic of the vehicle. Their stiffness and damping coefficient are measured and used as input data of the computer model. Leaf springs in the front and rear suspension systems are modeled by dividing them three links and joining them with joints. To improve the reliability of the developed computer model, the frame is considered as a flexible body. Thus, the frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC.PATRAN. A mode analysis is performed with the frame model using MSC.NASTRAN in order to link the frame model to the computer model. To verify the reliability of the developed computer model, a double wheel bump test is performed with an actual vehicle. In the double wheel bump, vortical displacement, velocity, acceleration are measured. Those test results are compared with the simulation results.

In this paper a new modeling and an optimal pole-placement control for the suspension system of Macpherson type are investigated. The rotational motion of the unsprung mass is emphasized in the new modeling. The two generalized coordinates selected in the new model are the vortical displacement of sprung mass and the angular displacement of control arm. Both variables are measured from their static equilibrium points. It is shown that the conventional model is a special case of the new model since the transfer function of the new model coincides with that of the conventional one if the lower support point of the shock absorber is located at the mass center of the unsprung mass. It is also shown that the resonance frequencies of the new model agree better with experimental results. Therefore, the new model is more general in the sense that it Provides an extra degree of freedom in determining the plant model for control system design. An optimal pole-placement control which combines LQ control and pole-placement technique is applied to the new model. Simulations are provided.

There is a need for explosion experiments for explosion-related research. However, there are many restrictions in performing an actual experiment. Therefore, in this paper, an alternative method of overcoming the constraints of an explosion experiment has been conducted using a passenger behavior analysis program called MADYMO to assess and analyze the human body injury due to explosion load. To increase the reliability of the analysis, a drop test has been conducted with the analysis. We provide a new framework for performing the analysis. In future, we will further develop our research with the goal of reducing the opportunity cost for the study of the human body injury.

A semi-active suspension is an automotive technology that controls the vertical movement of the vehicle while the car is driving. The system therefore virtually eliminates body roll and pitch variation in many driving situations including cornering, accelerating, and braking. This technology allows car manufacturers to achieve a higher degree of both ride quality and car handling by keeping the tires perpendicular to the road in corners, allowing for much higher levels of grip and control. An onboard computer detects body movement from sensors located throughout the vehicle and, using data calculated by opportune control techniques, controls the action of the suspension. Semi-active systems can change the viscous damping coefficient of the shock absorber, and do not add energy to the suspension system. Though limited in their intervention (for example, the control force can never have different direction than that of the current speed of the suspension), semi-active suspensions are less expensive to design and consume far less energy. In recent time, the research in semi-active suspensions has continued to advance with respect to their capabilities, narrowing the gap between semi-active and fully active suspension systems. In this paper we are studied the characteristics of vehicle movement during the field test with conventional and semi-active suspension system.

This dissertation tried to analyze passenger behaviors after an accident with the possibilities of a variety of accidents open reflecting the phases of the times of increasing interests in safety of passengers as the use of means of transportation such as cars and airplanes is increasing. Because a lot of data on head-on collisions, broadside collisions and reverse side collisions have been gathered through lots of experiments and interpretations, I chose to study a relatively unfamiliar subject, dropping collision. For example, I tried to study passenger behaviors in seating position after a dropping collision in preparation for falling accidents due to recent frequently-occurring sinkholes, driver's carelessness or mechanical problems. I used MADYMO, passenger behavior interpretation program, and experimented with 2 meters high Drop Test device which I made in person to increase the reliability of the results. On the basis of these, I compared the real experiments with interpretations.
The crash cushion has drawn a great attention because of its versatility, efficiency and simplicity in reducing the mortality and damages from traffic accidents. However, the existing cushion systems are high priced or have limited functions. The purpose of the study was to devise an improved crash cushion which can offer higher safety compared to the available ones at present. In addition, the conformity of the cushion with the facility standards was assessed through computer simulation for collision with vehicles. The novel cushion system adopts the used tires as shock absorber, which can not only secure cushioning effect but also reduce the production cost. Moreover, it is highly durable and easy to maintain and repair the damaged parts. According to the simulation using BARRIER VII program, the novel cushion system showed PHD of 17.4 g and 10.1 g for a frontal collision and a side collision, respectively. Based on the results, it could be concluded that the novel cushion system met the test standards in the guideline for road safety facility installation and management.
In this article, we first present an inductive taxonomy of national R&D structures in terms of relative R&D flows among prime actors. The R&D structure of Korea, along with the Japanese one, turns out to be an ill-balanced one characterized by the dominant role of private sector, vis-a-vis the minimal share of public R&D. In nature, private R&D is sensitive to business cycle and the vulnerability of the Korean structure has been invisible under prosperity but now is disclosed under depression. This problem is nothing new and indeed has long been recognized by the Korean government but the prescription seemed almost impossible. Ironically, the current economic crisis of Korea renders an unexpected opportunity for structural reform. As private firms are cutting down R&D investment, the relative share of public sector becomes significant. A simulation predicts that balanced systems will be achieved in some years if public R&D budget is kept up. Although the contraction of private R&D is by no means desirable, it is the right time for the Korean government to expand public R&D. Public R&D should be considered not only a remedy for market-failure but also a shock-absorber against cyclic instability. This is why the balance between public R&D and private R&D is emphasized.
