  • In this paper, the acceptance criteria(Striking Velocities) for the A12519 weldments have been developed. Dynamic impact simulation of A12519 plate was achieved by using LS-DYNA, and predict the projectile velocity and the crack length. Also, Ballistic impact tests of A12519 plate have been performed, and compared with analysis results. Critical velocities of A12519 plate were acquired respectively, and striking velocities of A12519 weldments were calculated. Present work data will be used by basic data in ballistic impact test for A12519 weldments.

  • Mechanical properties of Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposited (PECVD) silicon nitride thin film was studied to determine the feasibility of the film as a passivation layer over the aluminum bonding areas of integrated circuit chips. Ultimate strain of the films in thicknesses of about 5 k${\AA}$ was measured using four-point bending method. The ultimate strain of these films was constant at about 0.2% regardless of residual stress. Intrinsic and residual stresses of these films were measured and compared with thermal shock and cycling test results. Comparison of the results showed that more tensile films were more susceptible to crack- induced failure.

  • The exhaust systems are usually subjected to vibration or shock at high temperatures. The high temperature fatigue tests of the exhaust systems are rarely performed in domestic industries due to limited number of test facility and high test costs. In this paper, the high temperature fatigue test of some part of the exhaust system, not the whole system, is carried out. The resonator located at the central range is heated in the cylindrical electric furnace and the alternating load is applied on the end of the pipe welded to the resonator. The high temperature fatigue strength of the welded joint is obtained. The location of the fatigue crack is different to that in room temperature.

  • In order to evaluate the credibility of the welded joint design for combat vehicle using A12519, the numerical analysis for the joint model has been studied and the results are compared with the experimental works by the impact projectiles. The numerical approach using LS-DYNA involves the process of the crack initiation and propagation as well as the applications of the failure criteria for both the ductile and brittle failures. The good agreement between the numerical and experimental works are proved.

  • A practical method for reducing the number of spot welds in automotive structures considering fatigue crack initiation life is suggested. At first, an influence index for the durability and the fatigue life of a spot weld itself is defined and then taken as the main effect of the DOE analysis. Spot welds that can be removed without serious reduction of durability through numerical experiments are selected by the results of DOE. The proposed method was applied to the shock tower and LCA(lower control arm) structure of a vehicle, which are important components in durability-related point of view.

  • This study investigates thermal and mechanical characterization of environmental barrier coating on the $SiC_f-SiC$ composites. The spherical environmental barrier coating (EBC) powders are prepared using a spray drying process for flowing easily during coating process. The powders consisting of mullite and 12 wt% of Ytterbium silicate are air plasma sprayed on the Si bondcoat on the LSI SiC fiber reinforced SiC composite substrate for protecting the composites from oxidation and water vapor reaction. We vary the process parameter of spray distance during air plasma spray of powders, 100, 120 and 140 mm. After that, we performed the thermal durability tests by thermal annealing test at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 100hr and thermal shock test from $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3000 cycles. As a result, the interface delamination of EBC never occur during thermal durability tests while stable cracks are prominent on the coating layer. The crack density and crack length depend on the spray distance during coating. The post indentation test indicates thermal tests influence on the indentation load-displacement mechanical behavior.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the direct vessel injection design from a pressurized thermal shock(PTS) viewpoint for the Combustion Engineering System 80+ A break of the main steam line from zero power and a 0.05 ft$^2$small break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) from full power were selected as the potential PTS events. In order to investigate the stratification effects in the reactor downcomer region, the fluid mixing analysis was performed using the COMMIX-IB code for steam line break and using the REMIX code for 0.05 ft$^2$small break LOCA. The stress distributions within the reactor vessel walls experiencing the pressure and the temperature transients were calculated using the OCA-P code for both events. The results of the analysis showed that a small break LOCA without decay heat presented the greatest challenge to the vessel, however, there is no crack initiation through end-of-life of the vessel with consideration of decay heat.

  • The engineering ceramic needs the properties of high strength, hardness, corrosion-resistance and heat-resistance in order to withstand thermal shock or applied nonuniform stresses without failure. The densely coated porous ceramics can be used for machine component, electromagnetic component, bio-system component and energy-system component by their high-performances from superior coating properties and light-weight characteristics due to the structure including pore by itself. In this study we controlled the porosity of silica and alumina, $8.2\~25.4\%$ and $23.4\~36.0\%$, respectively, by the control of sintering temperature and starting powder size. We made bilayer structures, consisting of a transparent glass coating layer bonded to a thick substrate of different porous ceramics by a thin layer of epoxy adhesive, facilitated observations of crack initiation and propagation. The elastic modulus mismatch could be controlled using different porous ceramics as the substrate layer. Then we applied 150 N force using WC sphere with a radius of 3.18 mm by Hertzian indentation. As a result, the crack initiation in the coating layer was delayed at lower porosity in the substrate layer, and the damage in the coating layer was relatively smaller at the bilayer structure coated on higher elastic substrate.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack and peel-off failure in the contact zone, was investigated due to temperature shock(rainfall). To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Rainfall intensity, overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial temperature of overlaid concrete structures was heated up to 55$\^{C}$ by the solar heat. With a rain temperature 10$\^{C}$ and the rainfall intensity of nR=1/a, tR=10min, 60min, the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone. The vortical tensile stress increasing with overlay thickness was proved to be the cause of peel-off failure in the contact zone. The formulae for relationship between the vertical tensile stress and overlay thickness, material properties were derived. Using this formulae, it is possible to select proper material and overlay thickness to prevent failure in the contact zone due to temperature shock caused by rainfall.

  • In this study, nanocrystalline nickel powders were cold compacted by a dynamic compaction method using a single-stage gas gun system. A bending test was conducted to measure the bonding strengths of the compacted regions and microstructures of the specimen were analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy. The specimen was separated into two parts by a horizontal crack after compaction. Density test shows that the powder compaction occurred only in the upper part of the specimen. Brittle fracture was occurred during the bending test of the compact sample. Dispersion of shock energy due to spalling highly affected the bonding status of the nanocrystalline nickel powder.
