The navigational officer's knowledge about securing stability, an essential factor for promoting the safe operation of ships, should be improved along with advancement in ship technology, such as the large-sized ships and the appearance of autonomous ships. Accordingly, this study conducted a survey on stability, targeting navigational officers, and analyzed empirical awareness using general characteristics. Navigational officers had a high level of understanding of the stability criteria for a higher rank, but lacked the understanding of the special criteria for specific ship types. Of the total respondents, 87.6% were using a loading computer to evaluate stability. The GM scored the highest (3.891/5.000 points) as a method of evaluating stability on the ship. Further, whether the stability was secured was determined based on the GM and stability criteria. Most navigational officers replenish additional ballast water to improve the stability and use a small angle of rudder in the case of lacking stability. The results of this study are intended to be used as important data for improving education and research on operator-centered stability in the future by evaluating the empirical awareness of navigational officers on the ship stability.
From the definition of the cruise ship mission based on the investigation of the customer needs and statistical estimates and to design of the residence area of the cruise ship, in this study a conceptual design of the traditional ship parts (the lower hull) was carried out. for the light weight estimation of the cruise ship, several methods that have been used for commercial ships were evaluated to adapt for the cruise ship, the main particulars of the ship were determined with the light weight estimation and the assumed dead weight. From these main particulars of the ship, the hull form was developed with CFD verification and the general arrangement for the lower hull was achieved. For several loading conditions the intact stability of ship was checked.
As the size of ships increases, the size and output power of their thrusters also increase. When a large ship berths or unberths, the jet flow produced from its thruster has an adverse effect on the stability of quay walls. In this study, we conducted a numerical analysis to examine the impact of the thruster jet flow of a 30,000 TEU container ship, which is expected to be built in the near future, on the stability of a quay wall. In the numerical simulation, we used the fluid-structure interaction analysis technique of LS-DYNA, which is calculated by the overlapping capability using an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation and Euler-Lagrange coupling algorithm with an explicit finite element method. As the ship approached the quay wall and the vertical position of the thruster approached the mound of the quay wall, the jet flow directly affected the foot-protection blocks and armor stones. The movement and separation of the foot-protection blocks and armor stones were confirmed in the area affected directly by the thruster jet flow of the container ship. Therefore, the thruster jet flows of ultra-large ships must be considered when planning and designing ports. In addition, the stability of existing port structures must be evaluated.

Ship capsize accidents are common in coastal waters, particularly involving small fishing boats. To prevent there overturing accidents in small fishing boats, their stabilities must be assessed at the initial design step. However, the available information during the initial design step is limited, posing challenges in performing a reliable stability evaluation. Therefore, this study presents a plan to estimate the transverse metacenter (GM) of small fishing boats using parameters such as KM, KG, and TRIM that can be determined at the initial design step. Stability was evaluated by comparing GM with the minimum transverse metacenter (GMmin) specified in the standard safety evaluation criteria for fishing boats. To calculate the required trim value for hydrostatic characteristics using K-SHIP, a stability assessment program provided by the Korea Maritime Safety and Transportation Corporation, the initial trim state is estimated based on the ship lines using the commercial CFD program STAR-CCM+. GM is then calculated by assessing the hydrostatic characteristics in relation to the boat lines using K-SHIP. Furthermore, the stability of the fully loaded state is compared by subtrcating GM from GMmin. One constructed ship is designated as the standard ship, and the stability assessment method proposed in this study is applied to evaluate stability and validate its effectiveness. Consequently, the representative line of a 4.99-ton fishing boat and nine modular lines models derived from it were evaluated, ultimately identifying a relatively superior stability.

This paper deals with modeling and dynamic characteristic analysis of a large-powered LNG electric ship propulsion system. Basically, we perform to verify the adequacy of system modeling on the sea going mode and LNG unloading mode based on load flow analysis. And then, we observe the dynamic characteristic of system to perform motor starting analysis and transient stability analysis. Particularly, this paper examine analysis results in comparison with the IEEE standard 141 and the class rule. Hence, this paper has evaluated stability of the electric ship propulsion system at static and dynamic conditions.
Recently, the occurrence of a ship capsizing was analyzed as the main cause of the lack of stability or loss because of the improper management of the center of gravity, the movement of cargo or heavy weight when excessive steering occurs or when navigating during bad weather. Thus, to prevent a ship from capsizing, it is necessary to secure stability to enable the ship's return to its upright position, even if a dangerous heel occurs. The GM is a crucial evaluation factor regarding stability, which the navigation officer uses to preserve stability. In this study, based on the stability data collected from the operating of ships for five years, The GM by ship's type according to the operating status was analyzed specifically such as a ship's length, breadth, and gross tonnage. The feature of the GM distribution according to a ship's length was confirmed, and after performing the correlation analysis between the breadth and the GM, the ratio of the GM to breadth was calculated, and the result was compared with the previous ratio. Additionally, a simple approximation formula and minimum GM for the estimation of the GM by ship type were proposed by the regression analysis of the GM using the gross tonnage (GT)/breadth (B) to reflect the trend of larger ships being built. The results of this study are expected to be used as data for the review of securing a stable GM on ships.
When a ship is running in following and quartering seas and on a crest with the ship′s length being nearly the same as the wave length, ship′s stability will be lost most; "T" shape crests with highly concentrated energy will appear during the process of transformation from irregular waves to regular ones, and the ship may be under continuous impact of large waves for a long period of time; Synchronism will also appear when the ship′s natural period of rolling and period of encounter are close to each other. For safe navigation, proper stability should be well ensured, proper speed and course chosen with speed under 1.8L1/2 kn (L is the ship′s length), initial listing avoided, special attention paid to steering.

One of the most critical issues in naval architecture these days is the operational safety. Among many factors to be considered for higher safety level requirements, the hull stability in intact and damaged conditions is the first to ensure for both commercial and military vessels. Unlike the intact stability cases, the assessment of the damaged ship stability is very complicated physical phenomena. Therefore it is widely acknowledged that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are one of most feasible approaches. In order to develop better CFD methods for damaged ship stability assessment, it is essential to perform well-designed model tests and to build a database for CFD validation. In the present study, free roll decay tests in calm water with both intact and damaged ships were performed and six degree-of-freedom (6DOF) motion responses of intact ship in regular waves were measured. Through the free roll decay tests, the effects of the flooding water on the roll decay motion of a ship were investigated. Through the model tests in regular waves, the database that provides 6DOF motion responses of intact ship was established.
Prediction of the stability for ships is very complex in reality. In this paper, risk based approach is applied to predict the probability of capsize for a certified ship, which is effected by the forces of sea especially the wave loading Safety assessment and risk analysis process are also applied for the probabilistic prediction of stability for ships. The probability of shipsencountering different waves at sea is calculated by the existed statistics data and risk based models. Finally, ship capsizing probability is calculated according to single degree of freedom(SDF) rolling differential equation and basin erosion theory of nonlinear dynamics. Calculation results show that the survival probabilities of ship excited by the forces of the seas, especially in the beam seas status, can be predicted by the risk based method.

This paper addresses the trajectory tracking problem for ship berthing using sliding mode technique. With significant potential advantages: insensitivity to plant nonlinearities, parameter variations, remarkable stability and performance robustness with environmental disturbances, the multivariable sliding modes controller is proposed for solving trajectory tracking of ship in harbor area. In this study, the ship position and heading angle are simultaneously tracked to guarantees that the ship follows a given path (geometric task) with desired velocities (dynamic task). The stability of the proposed control law is proved based on Lyapunov theory. The proposed approach has been simulated on a computer model of a supply vessel with good results.
