Construction of sheet pile retaining walls in urban and coastal regions has resulted in sheet pile walls in close proximity to laterally loaded pile foundations. However, there is currently little information available in the literature to assist engineers for quantifying the response of sheet pile walls. This study provides a quantitative method for estimating sheet pile wall response due to loads imposed from a nearby laterally loaded pile. Three dimensional finite element analyses using commercial software, ABAQUS, were performed to assess the response of a sheet pile wall and nearby laterally loaded pile. The soils were modeled using Drucker-Prager constitutive model with associated flow rule, and the sheet pile wall and pile foundation were assumed to behave linear elastic. Four parameters were investigated: sheet pile wall bending stiffness, distance from the pile face to the wall, excavation depth in front of the sheet pile wall, and elastic modulus of the soil. Results from the analyses have been used to develop preliminary design charts and simple equations for estimating the maximum horizontal displacement and maximum bending moment in the sheet pile wall.

In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.

In general steel sheet piles are used in the containment system, which are vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, and roads in excavation for temporary structure. This paper presents case study of the use of an interlocking sheet pile for water and containment. Cut-off Z-type sheet pile joints are investigated to determine their permeability from the field test. Four different joint sealing materials are used in field test. The results showed joint permeability is significant time-dependent and joint-dependent. These are explored and conclusions on permeability characteristics of different sealants are noted. A case study gives a design example as well as suggestion on permeability and water tightness can be implemented in using the sheet pile barrier in civil and environment works. From the test results, the effective sealing programs of sheet pile interlocks are suggested.
As the forefront of structural design method, capacity spectrum method can be applied conveniently, and through this method, deformation demand of structure can be considered. However, there is no research for the seismic application in the structure of sheet pile retaining wall to report. Therefore, focusing on laterally loaded stabilizing sheet pile wall, which belongs to flexible cantilever retaining structure and meets the applying requirement of capacity spectrum method from seismic design of building structure, this paper studied an approach of seismic design of sheet pile wall based on capacity spectrum method. In the procedure, the interaction between soil and structure was simplified, and through Pushover analysis, seismic fortification standard was well associated with performance of retaining structure. In addition, by comparing the result of nonlinear time history analysis, it suggests that this approach is applicable.

Steel sheet pile can be alternative material for bridge abutment for. The steel sheet pile bridge abutment is new and replacement bridge abutment due to its aesthetically attractive and cost effective. Use of embedded steel sheet piling brings savings in dead load, provides a compliant retaining wall, and permits speedier construction. In addition, for replacement bridge projects, traffic interruption can be minimized. It is hoped that this study will encourage designers and constructors to consider a steel substructure option more frequently during the conceptual and preliminary design phases of projects and thereby to take advantage of the potential to construction more efficiently. In this paper, an analysis of stress and strain for steel sheet pile bridge abutment was conducted. From the analysis results, the stress and strain characteristics of steel sheet pile bridge abutment with variations of steel sheet pile parameters is suggested.

Stock(1992) had developed the graph for solving the penetration depth, tieforce of anchor and maximum bending moment of sheet-pile wall for cantilever and free earth supported anchored wall. Kim(1995) had developed graph for design of fixed earth supported anchored wall. In this paper, the simplified formulas for calculating the penetration depth, tieforce of anchor and maximum bending moment of sheet-pile wall was developed for fixed earth supported anchored wall in sand. The developed formulas may be helpful for design or sheet pile wall.

The design and construction of strutted and anchored sheet pile walls in soft clay are reviewed based on experience gained mainly in Singapore during the last 10years where mainly strutted sheet pile walls diaphragm walls, and contiguous bored piles are used. It is important to consider in the design the high lateral earth pressures acting on the sheet piles below the bottom of the excavation when the depth of the excavation is large compared with the shear strength of the clay. The strut loads and the maximum bending moment in the sheet piles can in that case be much higher than indicated by a conventional analysis. Different methods to increase the stability have been investigated. With jet grouting, embankment piles and excavation under water it is possible to reduce significantly the maximum bending moment, the strut loads, and the settlements outside the excavated area as well as the heave within the excavation.
In this study, a reliability-based design (RBD) procedure for determining design values fur anchored sheet pile wall is proposed considering overturning about the anchor point as the major failure mode. In this design procedure, the depth of embedment of the sheet pile wall is logically chosen in accordance with degrees of uncertainties of design input parameters using approximate probabilistic computation methods. These methods have been successfully used in the geotechnical engineering requiring neither understandings of complex probabilistic theories nor efforts to prepare more data. It was investigated that the design results by the proposed method were compatible with those by commonly used deterministic design methods. Additionally, in an effort to investigate the effects of changes in the degree of uncertainties of major design variables on the design results of the sheet pile wall, a sensitivity analysis was peformed.
An expansive soil in 4970 special railway line in Dangyang City, China, has encountered a series of landslides due to the expansion characteristics of expansive soil over the past 50 years. Thereafter, a sheet-pile retaining structure was adopted to fortify the expansive soil slope after a comprehensive discussion. In order to evaluate the efficacy of engineering measure of sheet-pile retaining structure, the field test was carried out to investigate the lateral pressure and pile bending moment subjected to construction and service conditions, and the local daily rainfall was also recorded. It took more than 500 days to carry out the field investigation, and the general change laws of lateral pressure and pile bending moment versus local daily rainfall were obtained. The results show that the effect of rainfall on the moisture content of backfill behind the wall decreases with depth. The performance of sheet-pile retaining structure is sensitive to the intensity of rainfall. The arching effect is reduced significantly by employing a series of sheet behind piles. The lateral pressure behind the sheet exhibits a single-peak distribution. The turning point of the horizontal swelling pressure distribution is correlated with the self-weight pressure distribution of soil and the variation of soil moisture content. The measured pile bending moment is approximately 44% of the ultimate pile capacity, which indicates that the sheet-pile retaining structure is in a stable service condition with enough safety reserve.
In the present study, an analytical solution method is proposed for the seismic design of anchored sheet pile walls used in port. The proposed analytical method deals with the anchored sheet pile walls with free earth support in sands and c- U soils, including the effects of hydrodynamic pressures and a condition of steady seepage between the two water levels. Also, the effects of various parameters(differential in water levels, anchor position, wall friction angle, dredge line slope, cohesion, adhesion etc.) on embedment depth, anchor force, and maximum bending moment are analyzed using the proposed method. In addition, comparisons between different definitions of safety factor are made, and necessary considerations required in the design of anchored sheet pile walls are examined.
