The present study investigates the effect of the shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity of non-Newtonian fluids on the heat transfer enhancement in a pipe flow. An axially-constant heat flux boundary condition was adopted in the thermal fully developed region. The present analytical results of Nusselt numbers for various non-Newtonian fluids show heat transfer enhancement over those of a shear rate-independent thermal conductivity fluids. The present analytical results showed good agreement with the previous experiments which excluded the temperature-dependent viscosity effect on heat transfer. This study also proposes the use of a shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity fluids in the design of a heat exchanger for heat transfer enhancement as well as reduction of fouling.
In order to investigate shear behavior of granular materials due to excavation and associated unloading actions, load-controlled plane strain compression tests under decreasing confining pressure were performed under drained conditions and the results were compared with the conventional plane strain compression tests. Four types of granular material consisting of two quartz sands and two glass beads were used to investigate particle shape effects. It is clarified that macro stress-strain behavior is more easily influenced by stress level and stress path in sands than in glass beads. Development of localized deformation was analyzed using photogrammetry method. It was found that shear bands are generated before peak strength and shear band patterns vary during the whole shearing process. Under the same test condition, shear band thickness in the two sands was smaller than that in one type of glass beads even if the materials have almost the same mean particle size. Shear band thickness also decreased with increase of confining pressure regardless of particle shape or size. Local maximum shear strain inside shear band grew approximately linearly with global axial strain from onset of shear band to the end of softening. The growth rate is found related to shear band thickness. The wider shear band, the relatively lower the growth rate. Finally, observed shear band inclination angles were compared with classical Coulomb and Roscoe solutions and different results were found for sands and glass beads.
Numerical Calculations for dimensionless pressure drop (friction factor times Reynolds number) have been obtained for fully developed laminar flow of MPL(Modified Power Law) fluid in isosceles triangle pipes. The solutions are valid for Pseudoplastic fluids over a wide range from Newtonian behavior at low shear rates through transition region to power law behavior at higher shear rates. The analysis identified a dimensionless shear rate parameter which for a given set of operating conditions specifies where in the shear rate range a particular system is operating, i.e., Newtonian, transition or power law region. The numerical calculation data of the dimensionless pressure drop for the Newtonian and power law regions are compared with previously published asymptotic results presenting within 0.16 % in Newtonian region and 2.98 % in power law region.
This Paper aims to examine the effect of shear lip formation from cross-sections on fatigue crack propagation rate in order to study the fatigue fracture behavior of the high strength aluminum material (Al 2024-T3). The following tests were achieved from this research. 1. As a result of depressing shear lip artificially by adding a side groove to a specimen, it is shown that the propagation rate of fatigue crack is faster than that of general specimen. 2. Through the two-step load test, the phenomenon that the shear lip decreases In the part of changed load gets observed. Consequently It Is shown that the crack propagation rate gets faster.
We applies Molecular Dynamics simulation technics to a system of Lennard-Jones potential interacting Argon liquid to study shear flow behavior. The thermodynamic state of the system is .rho.=35.54 Kg, mole/m$^{3}$, T=86.5.deg. K which is the triple point of Argon liquid. We applies shear rate : .epsilon.=9.26*10$^{9}$ 1/sec in the system. We find the response function, shear viscosity changes, and shear rate build-up as a function of time. We also find the thermal conductivity in a soft-sphere system.
A new paradigm for the viscosity of fluid is presented by considering the fact that the viscosity is equal to the shear stress divided by the shear rate. The shear stress is obtained from the sum of kinetic and internal pressures of fluid, and the shear rate is found from the phonon velocity divided by the mean free path of the phonon. The calculated viscosities for various simple substances are in excellent agreements with those of the observed data through the wide temperature range covered both of liquid and gas phase.
The present study investigates the effect of the shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity of non-newtonian fluids on the heat transfer enhancement in a 2:1 rectangular duct flow. An axially-constant heat flux and a peripherally-constant temperature boundary conditions(H1) was adopted for a top-wall-heated configuration. The present numerical results of Nusselt numbers for SRDC(Separan) show heat transfer enhancement over those of SRIC. The Nusselt numbers increased linearly as Reynolds numbers increased. The heat transfer enhancement is due to an increased thermal conductivity near the wall, which is attributed to the shear rate-dependence.
In order to investigate the effect of the loading rate on the mechanical behavior of SRC shearwalls, we conducted the lateral loading tests on the 1/3 scale model shearwalls whose edge columns were reinforced by H-shaped steel. The specimens were subjected to the reversed cyclic lateral load under a variable axial load. The two types of loading rate, 0.01 cm/sec for the static loading and 1 cm/sec for the dynamic loading were adopted. The failure mode in all specimens was the sliding shear of the in-filled wall panel. The edge columns did not fail in shear. The initial lateral stiffness and lateral load carrying capacity of the shearwalls subjected to the dynamic loading were about 10% larger than those subjected to the static loading. The effects of the arrangement of the H-shaped steel on the lateral load carrying capacity and the lateral load-displacement hysteresis response were not significant.
In the present study, spread-recoil behavior of a drop of shear-thinning liquid (xanthan solution) on a dry wall (polished stainless-steel plate) was examined and compared with that of Newtonian liquid (glycerin solution). Nine different kinds of xanthan and glycerin solutions were tested, including three pairs of xanthan and glycerin solutions, each having the same viscosity in low shear rate region ($10^{-2}-10^0\;l/s$). The drop behavior was visualized and recorded using a CCD camera. The maximum diameter and the spreading velocity of the xanthan drops turned out to be significantly larger and the time to reach their final shape was much shorter compared to the cases with the glycerin solutions, due to the smaller viscous dissipation resulted from lower viscosity in the higher shear rate region (>$10^0\;l/s$). As a result, the maximum diameters were measured to be larger than the predicted values based on the model proposed for Newtonian liquids, and the deviation was more pronounced with the solution with the larger viscosity variation. Consequently, viscosity variation with the shear rate was found to be a dominant factor governing the spread-recoil behavior of shear-thinning drops.
