ROI Extraction for Automatic Placard Recognition (플래카드 자동 인식을 위한 관심 영역 추출)

  • Containers are fitted with various placards on the surface to indicate the risk of cargo. If the containers are loaded with dangerous goods, care should be taken in handling the containers. Therefore, as part of the port automation system, there is a demand for automatic placard recognition. In this paper, proposed is a method to extract placard areas from a container image, which is the first part of the placard recognition system. The fact that placards are of various types but all have a diamond shape can be an advantage in recognition. However, it is a disadvantage in recognition that the placards can be distorted in various ways because the container surface is not flat. When the proposed method was applied to actual images, type I error did not occur. In addition, since the shape feature of the object and basic image operations are used to extract regions of interest, it can be applied to various shape-based region extraction problems.

New Methods for Correcting the Atmospheric Effects in Landsat Imagery over Turbid (Case-2) Waters

  • Atmospheric correction of Landsat Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VIS/NIR) over aquatic environment is more demanding than over land because the signal from the water column is small and it carries immense information about biogeochemical variables in the ocean. This paper introduces two methods, a modified dark-pixel substraction technique (path--extraction) and our spectral shape matching method (SSMM), for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters (Morel and Prieur, 1977) around Korean peninsula. The results of these methods are compared with the classical atmospheric correction approaches based on the 6S radiative transfer model and standard SeaWiFS atmospheric algorithm. The atmospheric correction scheme using 6S radiative transfer code assumes a standard atmosphere with constant aerosol loading and a uniform, Lambertian surface, while the path-extraction assumes that the total radiance (L/sub TOA/) of a pixel of the black ocean (referred by Antoine and Morel, 1999) in a given image is considered as the path signal, which remains constant over, at least, the sub scene of Landsat VIS/NIR imagery. The assumption of SSMM is nearly similar, but it extracts the path signal from the L/sub TOA/ by matching-up the in-situ data of water-leaving radiance, for typical clear and turbid waters, and extrapolate it to be the spatially homogeneous contribution of the scattered signal after complex interaction of light with atmospheric aerosols and Raleigh particles, and direct reflection of light on the sea surface. The overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ spectra, but yields significant errors for clear waters due to the invalid assumption of zero water-leaving radiance for the black ocean pixels. Because of the standard atmosphere with constant aerosols and models adopted in 6S radiative transfer code, a large error is possible between the retrieved and in-situ spectra. The efficiency of spectral shape matching has also been explored, using SeaWiFS imagery for turbid waters and compared with that of the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm, which falls in highly turbid waters, due to the assumption that values of water-leaving radiance in the two NIR bands are negligible to enable retrieval of aerosol reflectance in the correction of ocean color imagery. Validation suggests that accurate the retrieval of water-leaving radiance is not feasible with the invalid assumption of the classical algorithms, but is feasible with SSMM.

  • The shape of an object plays a very important role in pattern analysis and classification. Roughly, the researches on this topic can be classified into three fields, i.e. (i) edge detection, (ii) dominant points extraction, and (iii) shape recognition and classification. Many works have been done in these three fields. However, it is very seldom to see the research that discusses the connection relationship of objects. This problem is very important in robot assembly systems. Therefore, here we focus on this problem and discuss how to recover the connection relationship of planar objects. Our method is based on the partial curve identification algorithm. The experiment results show the efficiency and validity of this method.

Facial Regions Detection Using the Color and Shape Information in Color Still Images (컬러 정지 영상에서 색상과 모양 정보를 이용한 얼굴 영역 검출)

  • In this paper, we propose a face detection algorithm using the color and shape information in color still images. The proposed algorithm is only applied to chrominance components(Cb and Cr) in order to reduce the variations of lighting condition in YCbCr color space. Input image is segmented by pixels with skin-tone color and then the segmented mage follows the morphological filtering an geometric correction to eliminate noise and simplify the segmented regions in facial candidate regions. Multiple facial regions in input images can be isolated by connected component labeling. Moreover tilting facial regions can be detected by extraction of second moment-based ellipse features.

Discrete Wavelet Transform for Watermarking Three-Dimensional Triangular Meshes from a Kinect Sensor

  • We present a simple method to watermark three-dimensional (3D) triangular meshes that have been generated from the depth data of the Kinect sensor. In contrast to previous methods, which maintain the shape of 3D triangular meshes and decide the embedding place, requiring calculations of vertices and their neighbors, our method is based on selecting one of the coordinate axes. To maintain shape, we use discrete wavelet transform and constant regularization. We know that the watermarking system needs the information to be embedded; we used a text to provide that information. We used geometry attacks such as rotation, scales, and translation, to test the performance of this watermarking system. Performance parameters in this paper include the vertices error rate (VER) and bit error rate (BER). The results from the VER and BER indicate that using a correction term before the extraction process makes our system robust to geometry attacks.

  • 본 논문에서는 연속적인 입력화상에서 움직임을 나타내는 객체(Object)를 적은 연산량을 사용하여 추출해 내는 알고리즘을 소개한다. 본 알고리즘은 두 가지 단계로 이루어진다. 첫번째 단계로, 이전의 영상과 현재의 영상을 비교하여 움직임의 변화를 보이는 영역을 찾는다. 이 단계에서는 영상을 비교하여 움직임을 추출하기 위하여 창조영상과 현재의 영상, 그리고 영상의 데이터로서 edge정보를 사용한다. 두 번째 단계에서는, 첫번째 단계에서 움직임으로 판단된 Object mask(변화를 가지는 영역)를 가지고 background 제거 및 Object의 정확한 shape을 만들기 위한 post-processing과정을 가지게 된다. 이 두 단계를 거친 후 입력영상에서 background를 떼어낸 최종적인 Object의 shape정보가 추출되게 된다. 이 알고리즘은 object를 기반으로 부호화함으로써 데이터의 압축률을 극대화 시키는 MPEG-4뿐만 아니라, video database, 무선 통신등과 같은 다양한 범위의 application에 적절하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

The Application of BP and RBF Neural Network Methods on Vehicle Detection in Aerial Imagery

  • This paper presents an approach to Back-propagation and Radial Basis Function neural network method with various training set for automatic vehicle detection from aerial images. The initial extraction of candidate object is based on Mean-shift algorithm with symmetric property of a vehicle structure. By fusing the density and the symmetry, the method can remove the ambiguous objects and reduce the cost of processing in the next stage. To extract features from the detected object, we describe the object as a log-polar shape histogram using edge strengths of object and represent the orientation and distance from its center. The spatial histogram is used for calculating the momentum of object and compensating the direction of object. BPNN and RBFNN are applied to verify the object as a vehicle using a variety of non-car training sets. The proposed algorithm shows the results which are according to the training data. By comparing the training sets, advantages and disadvantages of them have been discussed.

3D face recognition based on radial basis function network (방사 기저 함수 신경망을 이용한 3차원 얼굴인식)

  • This paper describes a novel global shape (GS) feature based on radial basis function network (RBFN) and the extraction method of the proposed feature for 3D face recognition. RBFN is the weighted sum of RBfs, it well present the non-linearity of a facial shape using the linear combination of RBFs. It is the proposed facial feature that the weights of RBFN learned by the horizontal profiles of a face. RBFN based feature expresses the locality of the facial shape even if it is GS feature, and it reduces the feature complexity like existing global methods. And it also get the smoothing effect of the facial shape. Through the experiments, we get 94.7% using the proposed feature and hidden markov model (HMM) to match the features for 100 gallery set with those for 300 test set.

A System for Recognizing Sunglasses and a Mask of an ATM User (현금 인출기 사용자의 선글라스 및 마스크 인식 시스템)

  • This paper presents a system for recognizing sunglasses and a mask of an ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) user. The proposed system extracts firstly facial contour, then from this extraction results it estimates the regions of eyes and mouth. Finally, it recognizes sunglasses and a mouth using Histogram Indexing based on those regions. We adopt a face shape model to be able to extract facial contour and to estimate the regions of eyes and mouth when those regions are occluded by sunglasses and a mask. To improve the fitting accuracy of the shame model, we adopt 2-step face detection method and conduct fitting several times by varying the initial position of the model instance. To achieve a good performance of the face detection method based on a background model, we enable the system to automatically update the background model. In experiment, we present some experiments on setting parameters of the system with images taken from in our laboratory, and demonstrate the results of recognizing sunglasses and a mask.

Development of Real Time and Robust Feature Extraction Algorithm of Watermelon for Tele-robotic Operation (원격 로봇작업을 위한 실시간 수박 형상 추출 알고리즘)

  • Real time and robust algorithm to extract the features of watermelon was developed from the remotely transmitted image of the watermelon. Features of the watermelon at the cultivation site such as size and shape including position are crucial to the successful tole-robotic operation and development of the cultivation data base. Algorithm was developed based on the concept of task sharing between the computer and the operator utilizing man-computer interface. Task sharing was performed based on the functional characteristics of human and computer. Identifying watermelon from the image transmitted from the cultivation site is very difficult because of the variable light condition and the complex image contents such as soil, mulching vinyl, straws on the ground, irregular leaves and stems. Utilizing operator's teaching through the touch screen mounted on the image monitor, the complex time consuming image processing process and instability of processing results in the watermelon identification has been avoided. Color and brightness characteristics were analyzed from the image area specified by the operator's teaching. Watermelon segmentation was performed using the brightness and color distribution of the specified imae processing area. Modified general Hough transform was developed to extract the shape, major and minor axes, and the position, of the watermelon. It took less than 100 msec of the image processing time, and was a lot faster than conventional approach. The proposed method showed the robustness and practicability in identifying watermelon from the wireless transmitted color image of the cultivation site.
