In this study, new medial surface calculation methods using Voronoi diagrams are investigated for the point samples extracted on closed surface models. The medial surface is defined by the closure of all points having more than one closest point on the shape boundary. It is a one of essential geometric information in 3D and can be used in many areas such as 3D shape analysis, dimension reduction, freeform shape deformation, image processing, computer vision, FEM analysis, etc. In industrial parts, the idealized solid parts and shell shapes including sharp edges and vertices are frequently used. Other medial surface extraction methods using Voronoi diagram have inherent separation and branch problems, so that they are not appropriate to the sharp edged objects and have difficulties to be applied to industrial parts. In addition, the branched surfaces on sharp edges in shell shapes should be eliminated to obtain representative medial shapes. In order to avoid separation and branch problems, the new approach by analyzing the shapes and specially sampling on surfaces has been developed.

In general, pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is generated during the operation of separation devices, which use explosives, such as pyrobolt, puronut, purocutter, linear shape charge, and so on. During the flight of launch vehicle, pyroshock is mainly produced at the events of satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, characteristics of pyroshock are introduced in the first place and measured shock result data at the UMR of satellite mock-up during the separation tests of satellite and fairing are suggested. These results are compared with the suggested pyroshock test specification of satellite, and it finally confirms that the specification is reasonable for the qualification of satellite against pyroshock.

Characteristics of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic sheet depend on the quantity and shape of fibers. During a molding process of composites, the fiber-maxtrix separation and fober orientation are caused by the flow during the molding process. As a result, the product tends to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. Hence, it is very important to clarify the relations between separation-orientation and molding conditions. The correlation between the separation and the orientation have to be clarified for designing the fiber structure. In this paper, the degree of nonhomogeneity which is a measure of the separation is obtained using one-dimensional rectangular shaped part compression molding. And the orientation function is defined and measured by the image processing using soft X-rayed photograph and image scammer. Correlation between the degree of nonhomogeneity and the orientation function is discussed.

The present work has been developed the study of interpretation of separation behavior in gas expansion separation(GES) bolt which has the separation characteristics without fragmentation and minimum pyre-shock during the operation of the explosive bolt. In order to obtain the performance of minimum pyre-shock, the present work used non-compressive material instead of separation explosives. The use of the interpretation processor could be extensively helped to design the shape and the amount of explosives in the explosive bolt having complex geometry, and to analyse the separation behavior during the operation. It is also proved that the GES bolt is the most suitable the separation system necessary to minimum pyre-shock and non fragmentation compare with others.

This study was carried out for establishing the physical recycling technique for commercializing process on household batteries. The procedure involves shape separator, crushing, magnetic separation, classification and eddy current separation in sequence. The separation capacity was 400-600 unit cell/hr with shape separation system. The impurities such as manganese and zinc in the magnetic product were below 0.1% respectively, the concentration of iron was above 99% in spent carbon zinc battery. Also non-magnetic products are composed of 22-30% En, 16-22% Mn, 1-3% Fe in the case oi spent zinc carbon battery. The amounts of other components such as carbon rod, plastics and separator were about 37-50%. From the eddy current separation of nonferrous products, the plate-type zinc components were separated up to 96% with 2,250-2,750 meter/min of the conveyor speed.

The separation mechanism is installed to separate a note one by one from the stacked notes and the overlap type, one of separation mechanism, has been used a lot in financial equipments like ATM. This paper has compared and estimated analysis results using finite element method with experimental results over various parameters such as conditions of note, overlap value, roller shapes, which affect the friction force (resistance) exerting on notes between rollers. Consequently, the effect of various parameters on the performance of overlap type separation mechanism can be known and optimal shape and overlap value can be obtained.

Cells in a culture process transform with time and produce many overlapping cells in their vicinity. We are interested in a separation algorithm for images of overlapping cells taken using a fluorescence optical microscope system during a cell culture process. In this study, all cells are assumed to have an ellipse-like shape. For an ellipse fitting-based method, an improved least squares method is used by decomposing the design matrix into quadratic and linear parts for the separation of overlapping cells. Through various experiments, the improved least squares method (numerically stable direct least squares fitting [NSDLSF]) is compared with the conventional least squares method (direct least squares fitting [DLSF]). The results reveal that NSDLSF has a successful separation ratio with an average accuracy of 95% for two overlapping cells, an average accuracy of 91% for three overlapping cells, and about 82% accuracy for four overlapping cells.
The enantiomeric separation of several amino acid derivatives by reversed-phase liquid chromatography using two (R)-and (S)-naphthylethylcarbamate-β-cyclodextrin(NEC-β-CD) bonded stationary phases was studied to illustrate the chiral recognition model of the enantiomeric separation. The retention and enantioselectivity of the chiral separations with (R)-and (S)-NEC-β-CD bonded phases were compared with similar separations with the native β-CD stationary phases. Especially, the enantioselectivity and elution orders between the derivatized amino acid enantiomers are carefully examined. These results can be illustrated by the chiral recognition models involving inclusion complexation, π-π interaction, and/or hydrophobic interaction. Inclusion complexation and hydrophobic interaction of the naphthyl group of the NEC moiety seem to be major chiral recognition components in the enantiomeric separation of 2,4-dinitrophenyl amino acids and dabsyl amino acids on (R)-and (S)-NEC-β-CD columns. For dansyl amino acids, only the inclusion complexation is the dominant factor. Three different chiral recognition models containing π-π interaction, inclusion complexation and hydrogen bonding were proposed for the separation of the 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl amino acid enantiomers, depending on the size and shape of amino acids.

Numerical optimization of two dimensional high lift configuration was performed with flow solver and optimization method based on RSM(Response Surface Model). Navier-Stokes solver with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was selected for the simulation of highly complex and separated flows on the flap. For the simultaneous optimization of both flap shape and setting (gap/overlap), 10 design variables (eight variables for flap shape variation and two variables for flap setting) were chosen. In order to generate the response surface model, 128 experimental points were selected for 10 design variables. The objective function considering maximum lift coefficient, lift to drag ratio and lift coefficient at specific angle of attack was selected to reduce flow separation on the flap surface. The present method was applied to two dimensional fowler flap in landing configuration. After applying the present method, it was shown that the optimized high lift configuration had less flow separation on the flap surface and lift to drag ratio was suppressed over entire angle of attack range.
