  • In this paper an extension to an original active shape model(ASM) for facial feature extraction is presented. The original ASM suffers from poor shape alignment by aligning the shape model to a new instant of the object in a given image using a simple similarity transformation. It exploits only informations such as scale, rotation and shift in horizontal and vertical directions, which does not cope effectively with the complex pose variation. To solve the problem, new shape alignment with 6 degrees of freedom is derived, which corresponds to an affine transformation. Another extension is to speed up the calculation of the Mahalanobis distance for 2-D profiles by trimming the profile covariance matrices. Extensive experiment is conducted with several images of varying poses to check the performance of the proposed method to segment the human faces.

  • Active shape model is widely used in the field of image processing especially on arbitrary meaningful shape extraction from single gray level image. Cootes et. al. showed efficient detection of variable shape from image by using covariance and mean shape from learning. There are two stages of learning and testing. Hahn applied enhanced shape alignment method rather than using Cootes's rotation and scale scheme. Hahn did not modified the profile itself. In this paper, the method using directional one dimensional profile is proposed to enhance Cootes's one dimensional profile and the shape alignment algorithm of Hahn is combined. The performance of the proposed method was superior to Cootes's and Hahn's. Average landmark estimation error for each image was 27.72 pixels and 39.46 for Cootes's and 33.73 for Hahn's each.

  • We fabricated test samples containing various shape elements and surface roughness checking points for the jewelry cast master patterns by employing the 3D computer aided design (CAD), selective laser sintering (SLS) rapid prototype (RP) with the DuraForm powders. We varied the alignment angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ at a given layer thickness of 0.08 and 0.1mm, respectively, in RP operation. Dimensions of the shape elements as well as values of surface roughness are characterized by an optical microscope and a contact-scanning profilometer. Surface roughness values of the top and vertical face increased as the alignment angle increased, while the other roughness values and shape elements variation were not depending on the alignment angle. The resolution of the shape realization was enhanced as the layer thickness became smaller. The minimum diameter of the hole, common in jewelry design, was 1.2 mm, and the shrinkage became 12% at the 1.6 mm-diameter hole, Our results implied that we face down the proposed design elements with $0^{\circ}$ alignment angle, and consider the shrinkage effect of each shape element in DuraForm RP jewelry modeling.

  • Effects of the circular and non-circular pad shapes on self-alignment in BGA soldering are predicted using Surface Evolver, and the calculated results are compared with experimental data. While the pad shape has minor effects on self-alignment in the vertical direction, self-alignment in the lateral direction depends on the pad direction and length ratio of the non-circular pad. Larger restoring force is obtained in the minor-axis direction than the major-axis direction, which suggests a possibility of reducing misalignment in the specific direction. The restoring force of the circular pad is between those of the non-circular pad in the major and minor-axis directions. The calculated results of Surface Evolver show reasonably good agreements with experimental data using the shear loading system.

  • Using a three-dimensional (3-D) FE analyses, this paper provides the shape optimization of the standard test specimen for the torsion test, as well as a method for analyzing effects of misalignment under the angular and concentric misalignment. For verification, FE analysis is performed, which is designed for the perfectly full-model. To optimize the design shape of the torsion-controlled fatigue test specimen, we performed sensitivity analysis using shape parameters. Additionally, two kinds of misalignment (angular misalignment and concentric misalignment) are applied to the circular and tubular specimens to show effects of misalignments in the FE analysis. The present results will provide valuable information for designing shafts for every kind of mechanical system under torsional force.

  • In this paper, the effect of electrical characteristics and electrode shape on the alignment and attachment of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) has been studied. The attraction and alignment of MWNTs between the gaps has been investigated by applying electric field which is called electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis. According to the frequency of electric field, positive or negative dielectrophoretic force can be determined. The concentration of MWNTs solution was $5\;{\mu}g/ml$, and a droplet of $1.0{\sim}1.5\;{\mu}l$ was dropped between two electrodes. Through the repeated experiments, the optimal electrical conditions for aligning and attaching MWNTs in the desired places were obtained. Since the frequency range of 100 kHz~10 MHz generated positive dielectrophoretic force, MWNTs were attracted and aligned between the gaps with this frequency range. For generating enough force to attract MWNTs, the appropriate voltage range was $0.3{\sim}1.3\;V_{rms}/{\mu}m$. Furthermore, the effect of electrode shape on the alignment of MWNTs was investigated. A single MWNT attachment was accomplished on the round shaped with 70% yield.

  • Ferrule is widely used as fiber optic connecters. In fiber-optic communications, the shape accuracy such as coaxiality and cylindricity of ferrule affects insertion loss. When coaxial grinding of ferrule supported by two pin, pin alignment and chucking accuracy are very important. In this research, the kinematic behavior of the ferrule center is investigated in the case where cone-shaped center pins and round circle hales which make contact with each other near the edge of the holes, using homeogenous coordinate transformation and numerical analysis. The obtained results are as follows: The alignment errors between center pins alone do not affect the rotation accuracy of ferrule. The alignment errors between center holes cause a sinusoidal displacement of ferrule. And the maximum displacement of ferrule centers increase in proportion to the center pin angle in the case of a fixed alignment errors

  • Patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode requires multi-domain to exhibit wide viewing angle whereas the transmittance is sacrificed. To overcome the demerit, a fine pattern was formed at folded region in PVA Z-shape electrode structure. In the present work fine patterns were formed near domain boundary regions where the unwanted field direction which causes the LC to tilt down in unwanted direction exists. Thereby transmittance is improved near those fine patterns. This method is very simple and more cost-effective process than the other methods. In this article, we show the method of fine pattern formation and its influence on LC molecule in PVA mode with Z-shape electrode structure.

  • Since chevron alignment sign provides a user with information of road's alignment, it plays an important role in improving the safety aspects of the highway. Currently, it is installed without reasonable design specifications and maintained under insufficient labor and working time. This study, therefore, reviewed the current specifications involving design, installation, shape, and color and several alternatives were generated. The readibility and visibility were chosen as measure of effectiveness to compass these alternatives. Furthermore, spacing of sign was evaluated. The field study resulted that yellow background with black sign was more realible and visible than the other alternatives.
