  • This paper deals with a control technique of eliminating the transient vibration of a twin-drive geared mechanical system. This technique is based on a model-based control in order to establish the damping effect at the driven machine part. The control model is composed of reduced-order electrical and mechanical parts. This control model estimates a load speed converted to the motor shaft. The difference between the estimated load speed and the motor speed is calculated dynamically and it is added to the velocity command to suppress the transient vibration generated at the load. This control technique is applied to a twin-drive geared system with backlash. In the previous work, the performance of this control method is examined by simulations. In this paper, the effectiveness of this control technique is verified by experiments. The settling time of the residual vibration generated at the loading inertia can be shortened down to about 1/2 of the uncompensated vibration level.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of linear magnetic actuator for active vibration control. The newly developed linear magnetic actuator consists of permanent magnets and copper coils. On the contrary to the voice-coil type actuator, the linear magnetic actuator utilizes magnetic flux to generate the shaft movement. In this study, experiments on the prototype linear magnetic actuator were carried out to investigate its dynamic characteristics. Block and inertia forces generated by the actuator were measured. The experimental results show that the actuator can be used as both actuator and active tuned-mass damper. The linear magnetic actuator was attached to a cantilever as the active-tuned mass damper and active vibration control experiment was carried out. The experimental results show that the newly developed linear magnetic actuator can be effectively used for the active vibration control of structures.

  • Vibration/noise analysis as well as strength of gear teeth, roller bearing life. joural bearing design are considered in order to develop the high-speed machine centrifugal pump which had a speed increaser. A Campbell diagram, in which the excitation sources caused by the mass unbalance of the rotors and the transmitted errors of the gearing are considered. shows that. at the operating speed. there are not the critical speed. A high-speed machine centrifugal pump was made in order to evaluate developed speed increaser. Also, strict API standard were introduced for reliability evaluation of developed speed increaser, and performance evaluation were carried out. The result that evaluation items about bearing vibration, shaft vibration, noise, and lubrication temperature were selected, and were tested. a high-speed machine centrifugal pump were able to know what were satisfied with API standard all.

  • A spin coater is a machine to coat wafer or LCD display with thin film. Vibration in the spin coater may be one of main troubles in the coating process. In this paper, we focus on the difference between two spin coaters. Vibration sources are identified by experimental approach and are compared to find the difference between the two spin coaters. Also, the particle concentration is observed by laser particle counter (LPC) for the two spin coaters, when the spin coaxers are working. It is also considered whether the defect rate is proportional to the particle concentration. The result shows that particle generation in the coating process is related to excessive vibration of the spin coater shaft and the particles influence the defect rate of the thin film product.

  • The natural frequency of lateral vibration for ship's propulsion shafting tends to become lower as the relative stiffness of supproted system of the propulsion shafting decreases and the weight of shafting increases. Especially, the propulsion shafting of high-power ships such as car ferries, roll-on/roll-off, and container ships are susceptible to lateral vibration for their resonant speeds are happened to be in ordinary operating speed ranges. So far, many papers on the lateral vibration of ship's propulsion shaftings are published but they treated mainly special cases and not explained explicitly the calculation process. In this paper, the calculation processes of undamped and also forced damped lateral vibration by the transfer matrix method are presented and the calculation programs are developed. With the developed computer programs, a ship's propulsion shafting which was introduced on the published paper is analyzed for its lateral vibration and also the lateral vibration of the main drive shaft for a lathe is calculated to show the availiability of developed computer programs.

  • Power driving shaft systems with reduction gear are frequently equipped with elastic couplings to protect reduction gears and to relieve the torsional vibration problems. In this study, torsional vibration characteristics for the engine shafting system with elastic couplings are investigated and the calculating program is developed. It is confirmed that torsional vibration can be controled by careful selection of a elastic coupling with suitable characteristics and the suitability of a elastic coupling can only be determined as a result of a complete torsional vibration analysis including engine conditions such as misfring for shafting system.

  • The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the bearing of induction motors. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of an induction motor with superconducting bearings using HTS bulks. The bearing had eight hexahedron type YBCO bulks. Height, width and thickness of the HTS bulk were 30mm, 30mm and 10mm, respectively. Single phase induction motor was used to drive the shaft made of aluminum and the rotor of a conventional induction motor. To estimate the performance of the HTS bulk magnetic bearing, no load test, load test and Impact test were carried out. Load tests were performed by using air resistance caused by the shaft-mounted thin cylinder with buckets. Impact tests by axial direction and vertical direction impact showed that the vibration of the shaft gradually decayed. The induction motor with HTS bulk magnetic bearing rotated silently and smoothly throughout the tests. According to the test results, conventional bearings can be replaced with superconducting magnetic bearings made of HTS bulks.

  • Propellers operating in a given nonuniform ship wake generate unsteady loads leading to undesirable stern vibration problems. The skew is known to be the most proper and effective geometric parameter to control or reduce the fluctuating forces on the shaft. This paper assumes the skew profile as either a quadratic or a cubic function of the radius and determines the coefficients of the polynomial function by applying the simplex method. The method uses the converted unconstrained algorithm to solve the constrained minimization problem of 6-component shaft excitation forces. The propeller excitation was computed either by applying the two-dimensional gust theory for quick estimation or by the fully three-dimensional unsteady lifting surface theory in time domain for an accurate solution. A sample result demonstrates that the shaft forces can be further reduced through optimization from the original design.

  • This paper present an analysis method of crankshaft of four cylinder internal combustion engine for studying dynamic characteristics of the shaft. For simple analysis, uniform sections of journal, pin and arm parts were assumed. Transfer Matrix Method was used, considering branched part and coordinate transformation part. Natural frequencies, natural modes and transfer functions of crank shaft were investigated based upon the Timosenko beam theory: It was shown that the calculated natural frequencies, modeshapes agree well with the experimental results.

  • A critical speed analysis of a pump shaft has been investigated. Among various methods in the shaft critical speed calculation, a transfer matrix method has been examined in this research. After a brief review on the transfer matrix method, a modeling procedure for a continuous structure has been discussed. Then, a critical speed of a multistage pump shaft has been estimated up to several low modes. Throughout an analysis, parametric effects on the bearing stiffness, a degree of the modeling order, and attachmant of the impeller have been investigated. As an application example, a critical speed analysis of a verical pump which has been implemented in domestic electric power plants for cooling water circulation has been conducted in order to provide a safe operation as far as a pump vibration is concerned.
