  • Despite the importance and uses of serials in public libraries, the present condition of serial management is still behind. The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems and proposes the ways of improving serials management. For the purposes, this study conducted a literature review, case study of collection management policies of 8 regional central libraries and 3 public libraries abroad, and online questionnaire survey of 31 public libraries in Gyeong-gi province. Based on the results, this research suggests the need for extending the number and scope of serials subscriptions, improving access points and establishing management guidelines.

  • SICI(Serial Item and Contribution Identifier) is intended primarily for use by those involved in the use or management of serial titles and their contributions. And SICI is a standard that is developed for interoperability and electronic data exchange because of increasing need of the unique resource identifier. This paper introduces metadata standard ANSI/NISO Z39.56 that relates serials management. And it examines applications and implementations of Z39.56 toward serials management.

  • This paper discussed which of the three basic entries of serials that changed their titles-earliest, latest, or successive entry cataloging-is the most efficient, informative, and economical in a manual and an online environment. The results of the study are as follow: 1. Earliest entry cataloging or as an alternative, successive entry cataloging advocated by Cutter in 1976 was replaced in ALA Cataloging Rules by latest entry cataloging and with AACR1 and AACR2, latest entry cataloging was replaced by successive entry cataloging again. 2. Entry method of serial cataloging should be determined in consideration of goals of catalog, efficiency of catalog retrieval, theoretical and practical standpoint of entry methods, average cataloging time and cost, the state of adaption. 3. In a card catalog environment, if the numbering and class number of the serial that title proper changed into initials itself continue and the title history must not be too complicated, the serial is desirable to entry under the latest title. Except for above case, successive entry cataloging enables serials to be more quickly and economically made available to users than with either earliest or latest entry cataloging. 4. In an automated catalog environment, successive entry cataloging has more potential of satisfying and impairs the efficiency of both accessing and processing a library's serials collection. However, when initial cataloging by MARC format is done, careful screen design and complex programming will be needed. And subfield containing the local record number should be added to the programming means to link the various records together, i.e., 780 (preceding title) and 785 (succeeding title) fields for all related titles.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of the Serials Union Catalog(UCAT) of KISTI. In examining both MARC records and bibliographic display records of 172 Japanese serials, AACR2R and KORMARC formats were used as the standard rules. Those records were described in the minimum or incomplete level ; but had repeated errors in various data fields, which included the incorrect choice of main headings, parallel titles and other titles, the improper use of language codes and related data fields, and the provision of incomplete information, etc. To improve the overall quality of bibliographic database, thorough comprehension and application of cataloging rules and MARC formats are strongly required.

  • Mansebo[만세보] contains a total of 111 old shijos under the title of Haedongyeongeon[해동영언]. This dissertation presumes Haedongyeongeon[해동영언] as early 20th century shijo text and surveys its literary characteristic and its significance in relation with anthological compilation. Haedongyeongeon can be seen as both newspaper serials and a short anthology. The basic pattern of the serials shows an organization of 'title. musical designation, author. text. and a brief review. Of these, the review is what most clearly shows the characteristic of the serials. The review is written in Chinese followed by Korean letters to designate the sound of the Chinese. which is presumably designed to attract more readers for the newspaper. On the other hand, Haedongyeongeon[해동영언], when seen as a collection of works printed in serials, clearly shows an intention of compiling an anthology, particularly in its way of overall classification of works or arranging works according to their authors, and thus may well be defined as a short anthology. This anthology somewhat excessively pursues perfection in formality, and is characterized by its strong intent to be read as popular literature, and therefore could be said to manifest the general characteristic of 20th century anthologies. The planner of the serial Haedongyeongeon[해동영언], or the compiler of the anthology is thought to be one of the core figures of Mansebo[만세보], that is, O Sechang[오세창], Lee Injik[이인직], Choi Yeongnyeon[최영년], Shin Gwanghui[신광희], but of them all, considering all circumstances, Choi Yeongnyeon[최영년] is most likely to be the one. Lastly, it is presently unknown what anthology was used as the basis of Haedongyeongeon[해동영언] and accordingly any judgement on that head has been deferred.

  • Looseleaf publications are truly a unique type of library material, partaking simultaneously of the nature of serials and monographs. Therefors, two disparate methods of cataloging looseleaf publications coexist today. But the decision to catalog looseleaf publications as serials as monographs affects the acquisition, budget allocation, receipt, record maintenance, and user access. In view of these aspects, this study analyzed the sources of information and seven areas of description (title and statement of responsibility ; edition ; publication, distribution, etc. ; physical description; series ; note ; standard number and terms of availability) of CRDLP2 as the exclusive cataloging rules of looseleaf publications. The results of the analysis were summarized in chapter 4 in detail. Finally, it is desirable that looseleaf publications for updationg are cataloged as monographs since the bibliographic description applied to looseleaf publications follows so colosely that of monographs. And, the cataloger must pay partioular attention to describe the physical description area because of numerous changes of the bibliographic records accompanied by frequent revisions or updates of the publications.

  • This paper focuses on a scheduling problem of military training. Repetitive and identical training over multiple serials is a common type of military education. A simple but systematic method is suggested to determine a training schedule for small groups divided from each serial. A satisfactory training schedule and the number of such small groups can be determined by iteratively solving assignment problems with additional constraints. With this method, loads of instructors can also be balanced without violating constraints associated with precedence and continuity relationships among lectures.
