As the power grids are integrated into one big umbrella called a "smart grid," communication protocol plays a key role in successful operations. The successful deployment of smart grid interoperability is a major hurdle that must be overcome. The micro grid, a small power system that distributes energy resource, is operated in diverse regions. Different vendors use different communication protocols in the operation of the micro grid. Recently, the IEC 61850 has been legislated to solve the interoperability problems in power utility automation. The present paper presents a micro grid system based on the IEC 61850 protocol. It consists of a micro grid monitoring system, a protocol converter that transforms serial data to IEC 61850 data, and distributed energy resource controllers for diverse DER nodes. A developed communication gateway can be deployed for DER controllers with serial links to exchange data with IEC 61850-based devices. The gateway can be extended to IEC 61850-based distribution automation systems, substation automation systems, or SCADA.

Recently, many industrial devices are facing protocol compatibility problems with external monitoring and control systems. This paper designed an industrial communication gateway that can support the transformation of industrial communication protocol using multi-layered communication module. Industrial communication gateways have a structure that connects individual communication modules using rs485 serial communication to multiple layers. Each communication module consisted of analog data card, a digital data card LAN, and a CAN-enabled card. The main board processor used Atmega micro-processor, and the rs485 serial slot was placed to have a multi-layer communication module structure. These additive layer type communication modules support analog and digital I/O functions and LAN and CAN for wide use in industrial communication control and monitoring.
A portable multichannel functional electrical stimulation(FES) system for the fine control of the paralyzed extremities in spinal cord injury patients is described. This system is composed of a stimulation data creating system, a serial communication device, a 16-bit microprocessor, D/A converter of 32 channels and a display device. Stimulation patterns are created from analytical results of integrated EMGs during motion in normal subjects and are stored in the stimulation data creating system as data files. And then the stimulation patterns are sent to the memory in the portable multichannel FES system through serial communication interfacing device. Sophisticated fine control of paralyzed extrimities was realized by transmitting multichannel stimulation patterns to percutaneous intramuscular electrodes, which stimulate the motor function of paralyzed muscle simultaneously. Advantages of this system are as follws: 1) It is possible to modify stimulation patterns in accordance with the patient's situation. 2) This system is small and light.
In this paper, we propose new simple schemes for all-optical serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial data format converters based on a semiconductor laser amplifier in a loop mirror (SLALOM) for all-optical data processing. They have the advantages of simple and easily expandable structure, efficient operation and easy implementation. We implement the proposed all-optical data converters. and experimentally demonstrate their operation.

In this paper, GRS chip driven JNI code application SW design based on Android platform was designed and fabricated as motion gesture frame module based on Android platform. The serial data reception module design proposed by the application-based network support API technology was designed with Android-based module design, Android-based module implementation, and Android-based function module implementation design. The data information of the sensor could be checked through Android applications such as classes of serial communication drivers, libraries, and frameworks for receiving data from wireless communication devices through Android OS applications. In addition, applications in Android implement application SW that can judge motion gestures in four directions using Java.
This paper describes a high speed interface circuit using redundant multi-valued logic for high speed communication ICs. This circuit is composed of encoding circuit that serial binary data are received and converted into parallel redundant multi-valued data, and decoding circuit that converts redundant multi-valued data to parallel binary data. Because of the multi-valued data conversion, this circuit makes it possible to achieve higher operating speeds than that of a conventional binary logic. Using this logic, the proposed 1:4 DEMUX (demultiplexer, serial-parallel converter), was designed using a 0.35um standard CMOS technology. Proposed DEMUX is achieved an operating speed of 4.5Gb/s with a supply voltage of 3.3V and with power consumption of 53mW. The operating speed of this circuit is limited by the maximum frequency which the 0.35um process has. Therefore, this circuit is to achieve CMOS communication ICs with an operating speed greater than 10Gb/s in submicron process of high operating frequency.

In the area of factory automation (FA), a lot of researches are being executed about intelligent system using network. Conventional industry controllers are implemented the connection with other controllers by using asynchronous serial communications. These methods of communication have an advantage of easy implementation but have disadvantages of lack of real-time characteristics needed in motion control, slow baud rate too low to exchange required data sufficiently and low integrity because of different communication protocol. Serial real-time communication system (SERCOS) provides international standard communication specifications (IEC 61491) for interfacing between control units and drives from different manufacturers, has real-time ...

The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) system provides monitoring, data gathering, analysis, and control of the equipment used to manage most infrastructure. The SCADA Network is implemented in a various manner for larger utilities, and multiple types of protocol and communication interfaces are used to network the control center to remote sites. The existing SCADA equipment and protocols were designed and implemented with availability and efficiency, and as a result security was not a consideration. So, performance, reliability, flexibility and safety of SCADA systems are robust, while the security of these systems is often weak. This makes some SCADA networks potentially vulnerable to disruption of service, process redirection, or manipulation of operational data that could result in public safety concerns and/or serious disruptions to the infrastructure. To reduce the risks, therefore, there is a need to have a security device such as cipher devices or cryptographic modules for security solutions. In this paper we develop an embedded cipher device for the SCADA equipment. This paper presents a cipher device designed to improve the security of its networks, especially in the serial communication.

Recently medical and entertainment applications using conducting textile are suggested, but the data of conducting threads are not characterized, classified and verified. Only the data sheet published by manufacturing companies is available. Thus we need to verify the performances of the threading threads in communication. And we need a guideline if the existing communication protocols can be used for the conducting threads communication or the new specific communication protocols have to be developed for the communication. This paper classifies the characteristics of conducting threads made by domestic and overseas companies. Based on the criteria we classified conducting threads into three classes: class A, class B and class C. Further we carried out experiments to verify the adaptability of existing simple serial communication protocols such as RS232. Six different conducting threads are used in experiments and the length of each thread was 0.5m, 1m, 2m and 3m. The data transmission rate and error rate are collected and analyzed. RS485 is very prone to error due to static electricity from human and environment. So it may not be appropriate as long-distance communication protocol up to 12km which is possible in theory. RS232 shows stable and error-less data transmission ability even though every conducting thread didn’t show transmission capability over RS232. USB protocol shows high data rate transmission but the distance cannot be exceeded over 2m. Additionally, USB requires stable power supply. But if the power is supplied through conducting thread, its function is not.

This Paper deals with a design, making a prtotype and test methods of Real-time towed Line Array Sensor Data processing board for fast data communication and long range data transmission with SFM(Serial FPDP Module) through Optic-fiber channel. Towed line array sensors are installed in Frigate and the each LAS A, B, C group data from LAS is packed a previously agreed protocol and transmitted to the signal processing unit. Considering the limited space of VME 6U size, LAS Data processing board is designed with MPC8265 PowerPC Controller of Freescale for main system control and Altera's CycloneIII FPGA for sensor data packing, self-test simulation data generation, S/W FIFO et cetera. LAS Data processing board have VxWorks, the RTOS(Real Time Operating System) that present many device drivers, peripheral control libraries on board for real-time data processing.
