  • Using gel filtration chromatography (GFC), pure separation of high molecular silk fibroin was obtained and silk fibroin microsphere particles (SFMP) could be simply made by spray dryer method. Also, some of its physicochemical properties and morphology were investigated. The average molecular weight (Mw) of pure silk fibroin protein dissolved in calcium chloride is about 61, 500 g/mol as measured by gel permeation chromatography(GPC). (omitted)

  • We proposed a transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with high aperture ratio using an electrophoretic particle layer (EPL). The transflective LCD consisted of the stacked LC layer and EPL which was acted as a switchable mirror under in-plane electrode structure. Without separation of reflective part and transmissive part in one pixel, a modeselectable display device can be obtained.

  • This work is the basis research to apply Hydrocyclone for the separation and the thickening to the reservoir sediment. Chemical analysis result showed that organic contaminants were abundantly found in smaller sediment particles. As a result of the experiment device that higher reduced efficiency was obtained under the high velocity and low concentration with the small cyclones.

  • Virtual cyclones have been the subject of aerosol separation studies since they were first developed by Torczynski and Rader (1996). In the virtual cyclone (originally referred to as the anticyclone), the main particle-laden flow follows a wall that curves away from the original flow direction rather than curving into the original direction, as in a cyclone. Although a wall forms the inner boundary of the main flow, its outer boundary is formed by an adjacent flow, often a confined recirculating flow, into which particles are transferred by centrifugal action. • A magnetic separation study was conducted for a soil sampled from a landfill site where steel slag had been dumped for a long time. Heavy metal concentrating effect was evaluated by analyzing heavy metal content of magnetically separated soil and passed through soil. The effect was compared between soil after soil-washing process and original landfill soil and the effect was also tested between wet condition-magnetic separation and dry condition-magnetic separation. Separated ratio was relatively higher in non-soil washed sample. The water content has no significant effect on the separation rate. The concentrating effect of Fe, Pb, Cu, and Cd were 3.2, 2.1, 12.1, 2.5, 1.5 and 17.4, 7.0, 15.7, 9.6, 7.0 respectively for non-soil washed sample and soil washed sample. We can expect a bigger volume reduction effect from soil-washed samples. The volume reduction effect was obtained from the separation in dry condition. However, when the separation ratio is too high the volume reduction effect decreases. The magnetic separation leads to a volume reduction and concentration of heavy metals into a portion of soil in case of paramagnetic particles contained soil.

  • Appropriate removal of pollutants from combined sewer overflows(CSOs) and stormwater runoff is of primary concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality standards even under a wet weather condition. Harmful substances associated with particles besides TSS and BOD are subjected to removal prior to discharge into the natural waters. Effectiveness of five major hydrodynamic separation technologies, Vortechs, Downstream Defender including Storm King for CSOs control, CDS, Stormceptor, and IHS, were evaluated in this study. There is not sufficient information for accurate evaluation of the removal efficiency for the pollutants from the stormwater runoff and CSOs. Based upon limited engineering data, however, all technologies were found to be effective in separation of heavy particles and floating solids. Technologies utilizing screens seem to have advantage in the treatment capacity than the other technologies relied fully on hydrodynamic behavior. The IHS system seems to have a strong potential in application for control of CSOs because of unique hydrodynamic behavior as well as a flexibility in opening size of the screens. Size of the particulate matter in the CSOs and stormwater runoff is found to be the most important parameter in selection of the type of the hydrodynamic separators. There exists an upper limit in the solids removal efficiency of a hydrodynamic separator, which is strongly dependent upon the particle size distribution of the CSOs and stormwater runoff.

  • Gravitational SPLITT fractionation (GSF) provides separation of colloidal particles into two subpopulations in a preparative scale. Conventionally, GSF is carried out in a thin rectangular channel having two inlets and two outlets at the top and bottom of the channel, respectively. And the channel is equipped with two flow-splitters, one between the top and bottom inlets and another between the top and bottom outlets. A large scale splitter-less GSF system had been developed, which was designed to operate in the full feed depletion (FFD) mode. In the FFD mode, there is only one inlet through which the sample is fed, thus preventing the sample dilution. In this study, the effect of the sample-loading (in the unit of g/hr) on the fractionation efficiency (FE, number% of particles in a GSF fraction that have the sizes expected by theory) of the new large scale splitter-less FFD-GSF system was investigated. The system was tested in the sample-loading range of 3.0-12.0 g/hr with polyurethane latex beads (PU) and sea-sediment. It was found that there is an optimum range in the sample-loading for a FFD-GSF separation. It was also found that there is a general tendency of FE decreasing as the concentration of the sample suspension increases.

  • Swelling of starch granules by water-sorption causes a progressive or sometimes abrupt change in sorption behavior as a result of structural alterations and the possible exposure of new sites with high affinity for water. It is thus of interest to examine the time-dependent change in the size or shape of the starch granules. Gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) utilizes the earth's gravity as the external field, and is useful for separation of micron-sized particles with larger particles eluting earlier than smaller ones. In this study, GrFFF was used to monitor the swelling of two starch granules, potato starch and sweet potato starch during contact time of 11-12 days at room temperature in water. Results from GrFFF were compared with those obtained from optical microscope (OM). For both starch granules, the mean sizes were increased with time spent in water.

  • In this research, a purifying system using a centrifugal filter equipped with a water separation component has been studied. Oil utilized for lubrication and cooling in marine engines becomes unable to achieve its original purpose over time as the accumulation of solid particles and water increases. Therefore, methods applying the Bernoulli equation to eliminate water in oil were investigated and proposed. As a result, a practical purifying system was designed and tested by an officially certified organization. The new purifying system is anticipated to contribute to the extension of the lifetime of oil in addition to damage reduction methods of mechanical parts.

  • For the separation of olefins/paraffins, $Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3/Ag_2O$ composite membranes were prepared. When $Ag_2O$ was introduced, the initial selectivity and permeance of composite membranes were observed to be 13.7 and 21.7 GPU, respectively. The increase in performance compared to the initial performance of $PEO/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ membrane (selectivity 13 and permeance 7.5 GPU) was thought to be due to the increase of Ag ion activity due to the addition of $Ag_2O$. However, performance degradation over time was observed, which was thought to be due to the polymer matrix PEO. Since the PEO polymer could not stabilize the $Ag_2O$ particles, the $Ag_2O$ particles becmae aggregated together as the solvent evaporates, and $Ag_2O$ acts as a barrier. As a result, the permeance decreases over time.
