Vortex tube is a simple device which splits a compressed gas stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reactions. The phenomena of energy separation taking place in a vortex tube has been investigated experimentally. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air conditioner of special purpose. In this study, experimental study on vortex tube efficiency was performed with various cold end orifices and nozzles type. The experimental results indicate that there is an optimum diameter of cold end orifice and nozzle type for the best cooling performance. The variation of the maximum wall temperature along the vortex tube surface provides useful information about the location of the stagnation point of the flow field at the axis of the vortex tube. The similarity relation for the prediction of the temperature of the cold exit air was obtained.
The unsteady flow structure and the related noise generation, which are caused by the separation of a two-dimensional, incompressible, laminar boundary-layer on the flat plate under the influence of local adverse pressure gradient, are numerically examined. The characteristic lines of the wall pressure are examined to understand the unsteady behavior of vortex shedding near the reattachment point of the separation bubble. Also, the generation and propagation of the vortex-induced noise in the separated boundary-layer are calculated by the method of computational aero-acoustics (CAA), and the effects of Reynolds number, Mach number and the strength of the adverse pressure gradient on the unsteady flow and noise characteristics are examined.
The aim of this study is to provide fundamental informations that make it possible to use a cool stream and a hot stream simultaneously. We changed the pressure of compressed air that flows into a tube, the inner diameter of orifice that a cold stream exits, and the mass flow rate ratio. And in each case, we measured the temperature of a cold stream and a hot stream in each exit of a tube. Also we measured the axial and the radial temperature distribution in internal spare of a tube. From the study, fellowing conclusive remarks 7an be made. First, As the number of nozzles increase, separation point move into the hot exit. Second, When we use guide vane type nozzle, the axial temperature distribution constant over the 0.75 of air mass flow rate radio. Third, When we use Spiral type nozzle, axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space is higher than another nozzle. Fourth, Axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space vortex-tube is determined by separation point. And separation point is moved by changing of air mass flow rate ratio. At last, A heating apparatus is possible far vortex-tube to use.
The experimental investigation on energy separation in a vortex tube has been carried out to sow the effect of inlet and outlet pressures with various working fluids(air,$O_2,\;and\; CO_2$). Those outlet pressure means cold outlet and hot outlet pressure which were set equally. The results showed that the total enthalpy variation became a maximum when the mass flow rate at the cold outlet was a half of the total mass flow rate in the vortex tube (y=0.5). The total enthalpy variation was quite affected by the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of vortex tube when the ratio of the inlet pressure to the cold outlet pressure remained constant. Although specific enthalpy differences between the inlet and the outlet (both cold and hot outlet) did not noticeably vary with the pressure difference, the specific enthalpy difference between the inlet and cold outlet was dominantly affected by physical properties of working gases.
Three-dimensional vortical flow and separated flow topology near the casing wall in an axial flow fan having two different tip clearances have been investigated by a Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes (RANS) flow simulation. The simulation shows that the tip leakage vortex formed close to the leading edge of the blade tip on suction side grows in the streamwise direction. On the casing wall, a separation line is formed upstream of the leakage vortex center due to the interference between the leakage vortex and main flow. The reverse flow is observed between the separation line and the attachment line generated downstream of the trailing edge, and increased with enlarging tip clearance. The patterns of a leakage velocity vector including a leakage flow rate are also analyzed according to two tip clearances. It is noted that the understanding of the distribution of a limiting streamline on the casing wall is very important to grasp the characteristics of the vortical flow in the axial flow fan.
Numerical Simulation was performed to investigate the role of vortex generator. Vortex generator installed on the upper surface of the wing, generates vortex flow, mimic the external flow with boundary layer flow and transfer energy from outside to wall boundary. Vortex generator, thus, retards the flow separation and increases the lift and drag of the wing.
Vortex generators are commonly used in mechanical engineering and the aerospace industry to suppress flow separation owing to their advantages of simple structure, economic viability, and high level of efficiency. Owing to the flow separation of the incoming wind on the leading edge, a suction area is formed on the roof surface, which results in a lifting effect on the roof. In this research, vortex generators were installed on the windward surface of a flat roof and used to disturb to roof flow field and reduced suction based on flow control theory. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed in this study to investigate the effects of vortex generators on reduce suction. It was determined that when the vortex generator was installed on the top of the roof on the windward surface, it had a significant control effect on reduce suction on the roof leading edge. In addition, the influence of parameters such as size, placement interval, and placement position of the vortex generator on the control effect of the roof's suction is also discussed.
Also we measured the axial temperature distribution and the radial temperature distribution in internal space of a tube. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. Average flow rate that flows into a tube is in proportion to square root of inlet pressure. As inlet pressure increases axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space of vortex-tube increase. As mass flow rate ratio change, separation point moves.
Horseshoe vortices are formed at the junction of an object immersed in fluid-flow and endwall plate as a result of three-dimensional boundary layer separation. This study shows preliminary results of the kinematics of such horseshoe vortices around a circular cylinder with a cavity (slot) placed upstream to disturb the primary separation line. Through the cavity, no mass flow addition (blowing) or reduction (suction) is applied. The upstream cavity weakens the adverse pressure gradient before the cavity. With the upstream cavity, a single vortex is found to form immediately upstream of the cylinder whereas a typical two vortex system is observed in the absence of the cavity. Furthermore, the strength of the single vortex tends to be reduced, resulting from the interaction with the separated flow convecting directly towards the leading edge of the cylinder.
In the present study the flow fields around pitching foils have been visualized by using a Schlieren method with a high speed camera in a wind tunnel at low Reynolds number regions. It has been observed that small vortices are shed discretely from the leading and trailing edge and that they stand in line on the integrated streakline of separation shear layer. By counting vortices in the VTR frames it was clarified that the number of vortex shedding from the leading and trailing edge during one pitching cycle strongly depends on the non-dimensional pitching rate.
