The Study of Discriminant Validity for the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) of Children with and without Sensory Processing Disorder (아동감각처리척도(Sensory Processing Scale for Children; SPS-C)의 판별타당도 연구)

  • Objective : The objective of this study was to determine a discriminat validity of the Sensory Processing Scale-Children (SPS-C) for children with and without Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Method : The SPS-C was completed by parents of 151 Korean children including 68 typically developing children (control group), 83 children with SPD (known group) in the age range 3-5 years, in South Korea. ANCOVA with sex as covariable was used to identified the difference between the children with typically development and SPD. Results : Sensory processing differences in sensory domains and sensory factors were detected and the gender differences were not effective between typically developing children and children with SPD. Significant differences were found in all sensory domain score and total score except proprioceptive processing in sensory domain. In sensory factors, significant differences were found in overrsensitivity, underresponsivity, and discrimination, but sensory seeking was not significant. SPS-C was a valid assessment tool to identify or screen of SPD in Korea. Conclusion : The psychometric characteristics for the standardization study of SPS-C were presented, and the discriminant validity to screen the children with sensory processing problems was presented as a verified evaluation tool. SPS-C will be helpful in screening, analyzing and interpreting characteristics of sensory processing, and establishing an intervention plan.

A Pilot Study for Standardization of the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) (아동감각처리척도(Sensory Processing Scale for Children; SPS-C)의 표준화를 위한 예비연구)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to define a standard score of Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) and its concurrent validity by correlation with the Short Sensory Profile (SSP). Methods : The subjects were children enrolled in nurseries and kindergartens in Busan and Gyeongnam. We defined the standard score of the SPS-C and identified its concurrent validity for 337 children. Both the SPS-C and SSP instruments were used to assess the children's sensory processing ability. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0. A statistical analysis was used to define the standard score for SPS-C based on the mean and SDs of -1 and -2. To identify the concurrent validity of the SPS-C, the correlation between it and SSP was measured using Pearson's correlation analysis. Results : The ranges of total standard scores on the SPS-C were classified as follows: 115~160 indicated "Typical Performance"; 105~114 indicated "Probable Difference"; and finally, 50~104 indicated "Definite Difference." Concurrent validity was ascertained using the Pearson correlation between the total scores of the SPS-C and the SSP; the Pearson correlation coefficient was .755, indicating a statistically significant correlation. Conclusion : This study suggests the standard score of the SPS-C for interpreting results in clinical settings and confirms that it is a valid tool for evaluating children's sensory processing ability.

A Study for Construct Validity and Reliability of the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) (아동감각처리척도(Sensory Processing Scale for Children: SPS-C)의 구성타당도 및 신뢰도 연구)

  • Objective : The purpose of the study is to examine the construct validity and internal consistency of the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C). Method : 117 participants who are aged 3 to 5 years old has been evaluated by the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) for this study and the period is from November 2014 to June 2016. Statistics used for data analysis is factor analysis for construct validity and Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency. Results : In the factor analysis, the items in auditory, visual, and tactile showed a high factor loading, respectively. The items in vestibular and proprioceptive were overlapped. For internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha was .728 for whole scale which is high level. And Cronbach's alpha of each factor was range within .326~.636. Conclusion : The results of the psychometric test in this study evidence that the SPS-C is valid and reliable to be utilized. Further study need to examine various validities and reliabilities as well as standardization.

A Preliminary Study to Development of an Assessment to Measure Sensory Processing of Children, 'Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C)' (아동감각처리척도(Sensory Processing Scale for Children: SPS-C) 개발을 위한 예비 연구)

  • Objective : Purpose of this study is to develop a Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) to screen sensory processing problems for children aged 3 to 5, and examine validity of the assessment. Method : A draft version of Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) has been developed and it was utilized to 138 caregivers of children who are 3 to 5 years old. Rasch analysis was used to test construct validity of SPS-C. Through the Rasch analysis, unidimensionality and adequacy of the rating scale were examined. Results : Based on the Rasch analysis, it was found that six items out of 56 items (10.7%) are misfits. And the results also showed that 3-points rating scale is more adequate than 5-points scale for SPC-C. Conclusion : The construct validity of a newly developed assessment, Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C), was established through this study. Further studies are needed to examine other psychometric properties of the assessment, using the one modified based on the results in this study.

A Study of Test-Retest Reliability and Interrater Reliability of the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) (아동감각처리척도(Sensory Processing Scale for Children; SPS-C)의 검사-재검사 신뢰도와 검사자간 신뢰도 연구)

  • Objective : This study examined the test-retest reliability and interrater reliability of the Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C). Method : Senventy primary caregivers of children with sensory processing difficulties and 3 years old participated in the study. The subjects were recruited through child development centers, welfare centers, and acquaintances located in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Busan, and Gyeongsang-do. The test-retest reliability verification targeted 20 main caregivers of children with difficulty in sensory processing. Re-evaluation was performed within 7 to 14 days after the initial evaluation, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to confirm the relevance between the two time points, and the Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to confirm the degree of agreement. The interrater reliability verification was conducted with 18 primary caregivers and 18 subsidiary caregivers of children with sensory processing difficulties. Each caregiver evaluated the same child, and the Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to confirm the agreement between the two sets of caregivers. Results : The test-retest reliability was Pearson's correlation coefficient r=.914 and intraclass correlation coefficient ICC=.939, indicating a high level of relevance and agreement. The interrater reliability was an Intraclass correlation coefficient ICC=.727, which showed a moderate level of agreement, but the tactile area (ICC=.455) and proprioceptive area (ICC=.439) were not statistically significant and showed a low degree of agreement. Conclusion : Through this study, it was confirmed that the children's Sensory Processing Scale for Children (SPS-C) is a stable evaluation tool with test-retest reliability and interrater reliability verified, and it will be able to provide help in standardization studies for future clinical use.
