  • In this study, the artery's compliance model and the pulsation waveform model was proposed to estimate blood pressure without applying HPF (High Pass Filter) on signal measured by the oscillometric method. The method proposed in the study considered two ways of estimating blood pressure. The first method of estimating blood pressure is by comparing and analyzing changes in pulsation waveform's dicrotic notch region during each cardiac period. The second method is by comparing and analyzing morphological changes in the pulsation waveform during each cardiac period, which occur in response to the change in pressure applied on the cuff. To implement these methods, we proposed the compliance model and the pulsation waveform model of the artery based on hemodynamic theory, and then conducted various simulations. The artery model presented in this study only took artery's compliance into account. Then, a pulsation waveform model was suggested, which uses characteristic changes in the pulsation waveform to estimate blood pressure. In addition, characteristic changes were observed in arterial volume by applying artery's pulsation waveform to the compliance model. The pulsation waveform model was suggested to estimate blood pressure using characteristic changes of the pulsation waveform in the arteries. This model was composed of the sum of sine waves and a Fourier's series in combination form up to 10th harmonics components of the sinusoidal waveform. Then characteristic of arterial volume change was observed by inputting pulsation waveform into the compliance model. The characteristic changes were also observed in the pulsation waveform by mapping the arterial volume change in accordance with applied cuff's pressure change to the pulsation waveform's change according to applied pressure changes by cuff. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures were estimated by applying positional change of pulsation waveform's dicrotic notch region.

  • In this study, the compressive deformation behaviors of aluminum alloy under high strain rates were investigated by means of a SHPB test. An acoustic emission (AE) technique was also employed to monitor the signals detected from the deformation during the entire impact by using an AE sensor connected to the specimen with a waveguide in real time. AE signals were analyzed in terms of AE amplitude, AE energy and peak frequency. The impacted specimen surface and side area were observed after the test to identify the particular features in the AE signal corresponding to the specific types of damage mechanisms. As the strain increased, the AE amplitude and AE energy increased whereas the AE peak frequency decreased. It was elucidated that each AE signal was closely associated with the specific damage mechanism in the material.

  • Lane tracking and obstacle avoidance are considered two of the key technologies on an unmanned ground vehicle system. In this paper, we propose a method of lane tracking and obstacle avoidance, which can be expressed as vehicle control, modeling, and sensor experiments. First, obstacle avoidance consists of two parts: a longitudinal control system for acceleration and deceleration and a lateral control system for steering control. Each system is used for unmanned ground vehicle control, which notes the vehicle's location, recognizes obstacles surrounding it, and makes a decision how fast to proceed according to circumstances. During the operation, the control strategy of the vehicle can detect obstacle and perform obstacle avoidance on the road, which involves vehicle velocity. Second, we explain a method of lane tracking by means of a vision system, which consists of two parts: First, vehicle control is included in the road model through lateral and longitudinal control. Second, the image processing method deals with the lane tracking method, the image processing algorithm, and the filtering method. Finally, in this paper, we propose a method for vehicle control, modeling, lane tracking, and obstacle avoidance, which are confirmed through vehicles tests.

  • Malfunction of satellite launch vehicles with high speed and long range can be a major concern for operations. Flight safety system that monitor the trajectory and identify any failure of the launch vehicles. Tracking filters for the flight safety systems are different from common tracking filters since filter reliability is more emphasized than accuracy. Reliable estimation of instantaneous impact points requires reliable velocity estimates as well as reliable position estimates. A fusion filter for a flight safety system was developed with the tracking sensor models for the Korea Satellite Launch Vehicle I. The fusion filter performances were evaluated by analyzing the trajectory and instantaneous impact point estimates.

  • The procedures and relevant programs developed for analyzing mechanical load data of wind turbine generator systems, which are obtained through type certification tests, are verified. The following issues according to IEC 61400-13 are covered in the developed programs: data validation, time series analysis, summary load statistics, generation of fatigue load spectra, and estimation of equivalent loads. A capture matrix for normal power production is generated to determine whether the collected data sets are sufficient to carry out fatigue analysis. Fatigue load spectra are obtained through the rainflow counting method using 50 load ranges; finally, equivalent loads are calculated using different S-N curve slopes, m, according to the relevant materials. Case studies are performed using aero-elastic simulation data of the NREL 5 MW baseline wind turbine with a monopile foundation.

  • In this study, a new function with higher accuracy for fire heat release rate prediction was developed. The 'αt2' curve, which is the major exponential function currently used for fire engineering calculations, must be improved to minimize the prediction gap that causes fire system engineering inefficiency and lower cost-effectiveness. The newly developed prediction function was designed to cover the initial fire stage that features rapid growth based on logistic function theory, which has a more logical background and graphical similarity compared to conventional exponential function methods for 'αt2'. The new function developed in this study showed apparently higher prediction accuracy over wider range of fire growth durations. With the progress of fire growth pattern studies, the results presented herein will contribute towards more effective fire protection engineering.
