  • This paper proposes a power management scheme for sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks based on sensor node operating system supporting the sensor transparency, which can turn off the sensors when the MCU is in sleep mode. We classify the sensors in two types, that is, event sensors and polling sensors, to be able to decide whether the sensor is a type of sensors whose power supply can be turned off or not, and we design a new scheduler to support recognition of those different types of sensors. Implementing and evaluation of the scheduler and the power manager supporting sensor transparency are shown based on Nano-Q+.

  • Reducing the energy consumed by sensor node is a critical issue in wireless sensor networks. In particular, energy in each sensor node is too limited to waste on overhearing of packets that are not relevant. In this paper, we propose a wakeup scheme to reduce overhearing energy through the wakeup time difference between neighboring nodes. Other research papers on wakeup schemes usually focus on decreasing the latency. We propose a technique to reduce wasted energy for overhearing using the wakeup scheme. Simulation results indicate that our proposed wakeup scheme improves the sensor network lifetime.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks consist of small, inexpensive, low-powered sensor nodes that communicate with each other. To achieve a low communication cost in a resource constrained network, a novel concept of signcryption has been applied for secure communication. Signcryption enables a user to perform a digital signature for providing authenticity and public key encryption for providing message confidentiality simultaneously in a single logical step with a lower cost than that of the sign-then-encrypt approach. Ring signcryption maintains the signer's privacy, which is lacking in normal signcryption schemes. Signcryption can provide confidentiality and authenticity without revealing the user's identity of the ring. This paper presents the security notions and an evaluation of an ID-based ring signcryption scheme for wireless sensor networks. The scheme has been proven to be better than the existing schemes. The proposed scheme was found to be secure against adaptive chosen ciphertext ring attacks (IND-IDRSC-CCA2) and secure against an existential forgery for adaptive chosen message attacks (EF-IDRSC-ACMA). The proposed scheme was found to be more efficient than scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks reported by Qi. et al. based on the running time and energy consumption.

  • Broadcasting in multi-hop wireless sensor networks is a basic operation that supports many applications such as route search, setting up addresses and sending messages from the sink to sensor nodes. The broadcasting using flooding causes problems that can be mentioned as a broadcasting storm such as redundancy, contention and collision. A variety of broadcasting schemes using wireless sensor networks have been proposed to achieve superior performance rather than simple flooding scheme. Broadcasting algorithms in wireless sensor networks can be classified into six subcategories: flooding scheme, probabilistic scheme, counter-based scheme, distance-based scheme, location-based schemes, and neighbor knowledge-based scheme. This study analyzes a simple flooding scheme, probabilistic scheme, counter-based scheme, distance-based scheme, and neighbor knowledge-based scheme, and compares the performance and efficiency of each scheme through network simulation.

  • Severe energy constraints and the low power consumption require the significance of the energy efficient error control mechanisms in wireless sensor network (WSN). In this paper, an automatic repeat request (ARQ) methodology for the analysis of error control schemes in WSN is presented such that the effects of packet length, the modulation scheme and the interference effect of the wireless channel are investigated. Moreover, an analyis of ARQ error control is provided by considering two major architectures for wireless sensor network, i.e., Mica2 and MicaZ sensor nodes. And the throughput performance of WSN with asynchronous FSK signal and DSSS-OQPSK signal with selective repeat ARQ scheme are analyzed in multiple interference environment, and the probability of receiving a correct bit and packet from target node to sink node is evaluated as a function of the channel parameter, the number of wireless sensor node, and the spreading factor.

  • This paper describes a novel power management circuitry for reducing the sleeping mode power dissipation. Based on the proposed power management circuitry, the sensor module can be activated by RF wake-up signal, perform designated process and deactivate itself. There is absolutely no power dissipation at the sleeping mode which takes almost time of the operation. The temperature sensor module using solar cell as energy source has been fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that the sensor module with 3300 ${\mu}$F for storage capacitor can transmits RF temperature data to a receiver at a distance of 20 m every 15 second in a normal indoor light condition and keep the capacitor voltage over 9 V. And the sensor module can operate 100 times with a single charging, that means it is possible for the sensor module to transmit every 5 minute for 8 hours without light or any other power input during the night time.

  • Wireless sensor network may be installed where it is hard to access or where one has to constantly gather data without any human's monitoring. Sensors which compose a sensor network are usually small with poor battery capacities and thus energy-efficient usage is very important because of difficulties in replacing or recharging the batteries to make the lifetime of the whole sensor network longer. LEACH protocol, a well-known hierarchical routing protocol, may resolve this problem by distributing the role of cluster header evenly to the sensor nodes in the whole area of network at each round. In this thesis, we introduce a variant of LEACH protocol which considers the distance between base station and sensors in the way that if a node is far from the base station then the probability that this node becomes a cluster header is low. Experiments to evaluate the energy efficiency and the ability to collect the information show that the proposed method in this paper has maintained much wider sensing area while keeping the energy efficiency same as LEACH.

  • Data redundancy has high impact on Wireless Sensor Network's (WSN) performance and reliability. Spatial and temporal similarity is an inherent property of sensory data. By reducing this spatio-temporal data redundancy, substantial amount of nodal energy and bandwidth can be conserved. Most of the data gathering approaches use either temporal correlation or spatial correlation to minimize data redundancy. In Collective Prediction exploiting Spatio Temporal correlation (CoPeST), we exploit both the spatial and temporal correlation between sensory data. In the proposed work, the spatial redundancy of sensor data is reduced by similarity based sub clustering, where closely correlated sensor nodes are represented by a single representative node. The temporal redundancy is reduced by model based prediction approach, where only a subset of sensor data is transmitted and the rest is predicted. The proposed work reduces substantial amount of energy expensive communication, while maintaining the data within user define error threshold. Being a distributed approach, the proposed work is highly scalable. The work achieves up to 65% data reduction in a periodical data gathering system with an error tolerance of 0.6℃ on collected data.

  • In this paper, we design and implement a automatic control system of wireless sensor network based sprayer for hog barns. The proposed control system is driven by events from sensor nodes. It gathers various sensor readings such as temperature, humid, water level and water temperature, and controls the sprayer in real time by analyzing the sensor readings. Through experiments, we show that the proposed control system manages temperature and humidity steadily. Our proposed system enhances the existing system about 33% for temperature management and 37.3% for humidity management.

  • Wireless sensor nodes have limited energy, so it is important to optimize energy consumption to preserve network lifetime. Various protocols have been proposed for this purpose. LEACH protocol and SEP are the representative protocols. These protocols become less effective as the Sensor Field becomes wider. To improve this, MR-SEP and L-SEP were proposed. These protocols increase the energy efficiency by dividing the Sensor Field into layers and reducing the transmission distance. However, when dividing a layer, there are cases where it is divided inefficiently, and a node within a certain range from a Base Station has a better transmission efficiency than a direct transmission method using a cluster method. In this paper, we propose a Single-hop layer for L-SEP to improve inefficient layer division and near node transmission efficiency. When the larger the Sensor Field, the better the performance of the proposed method by up to 87%. The larger the sensor field, the more efficient the proposed method is over the conventional method. That is, the proposed method is suitable for the wide Sensor Field.
