  • Graphene is a sp2-hybridized carbon sheet with an atomic-level thickness and a wide range of graphene applications has been intensely investigated due to its unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. In particular, hybrid graphene structures combined with various nanomaterials have been studied in energy- and sensor-based applications due to the high conductivity, large surface area and enhanced reactivity of the nanostructures. Conventional metal-catalytic growth method, however, makes useful applications difficult since a transfer process, used to separate graphene from the metal substrate, should be required. Recently several papers have been published on direct graphene growth on the two dimensional planar substrates, but it is necessary to explore a direct growth of hierarchical nanostructures for the future graphene applications. In this study, uniform graphene layers were successfully synthesized on highly dense dielectric nanowires (NWs) without any external catalysts. We also demonstrated that the graphene morphology on NWs can be controlled by the growth parameters, such as temperature or partial pressure in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. This direct growth method can be readily applied to the fabrication of nanoscale graphene electrode with designed structures because a wide range of nanostructured template is available. In addition, we believe that the direct growth growth approach and morphological control of graphene are promising for the advanced graphene applications such as super capacitors or bio-sensors.

  • In large scale environments like airport, museum, large warehouse and department store, autonomous mobile robots will play an important role in security and surveillance tasks. Robotic security guards will give the surveyed information of large scale environments and communicate with human operator with that kind of data such as if there is an object or not and a window is open. Both for visualization of information and as human machine interface for remote control, a 3D model can give much more useful information than the typical 2D maps used in many robotic applications today. It is easier to understandable and makes user feel like being in a location of robot so that user could interact with robot more naturally in a remote circumstance and see structures such as windows and doors that cannot be seen in a 2D model. In this paper we present our simple and easy to use method to obtain a 3D textured model. For expression of reality, we need to integrate the 3D models and real scenes. Most of other cases of 3D modeling method consist of two data acquisition devices. One for getting a 3D model and another for obtaining realistic textures. In this case, the former device would be 2D laser range-finder and the latter device would be common camera. Our algorithm consists of building a measurement-based 2D metric map which is acquired by laser range-finder, texture acquisition/stitching and texture-mapping to corresponding 3D model. The algorithm is implemented with laser sensor for obtaining 2D/3D metric map and two cameras for gathering texture. Our geometric 3D model consists of planes that model the floor and walls. The geometry of the planes is extracted from the 2D metric map data. Textures for the floor and walls are generated from the images captured by two 1394 cameras which have wide Field of View angle. Image stitching and image cutting process is used to generate textured images for corresponding with a 3D model. The algorithm is applied to 2 cases which are corridor and space that has the four wall like room of building. The generated 3D map model of indoor environment is shown with VRML format and can be viewed in a web browser with a VRML plug-in. The proposed algorithm can be applied to 3D model-based remote surveillance system through WWW.

  • Smear is a phenomenon that occurs when an extremely strong light source appears in the imaging system with CCD sensor. It occurs due to the signal charge transfer of CCD and appears as bright lines of noise emanating vertically (or horizontally) from the light source. For still images, smear can be reduced by using a mechanical shutter or special drive methods, but these techniques cannot be applied to image sequences. In this paper, we propose a smear removal method that can be applied to imaging systems for not only still images but also image sequences. The proposed method uses the optical black region(OBR) which is a group of pixels located in the boundary of CCD imaging sensors. Although the OBR is not exposed to light, it contains smear information caused by the charge transport. First, noise and the smear signal in the OBR is separated, and noise is removed to correctly estimate smear effect. Then, corrected OBR signal is uniformly subtracted to eliminate smear effect. Also, if saturation is occurred, the current pixel is substituted by weighted summation of neighboring pixels to improve the visual degradation. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional methods.

  • Recently the CPU performance of modem chipsets or multimedia processors of mobile phone is as high as notebook PC. That is why mobile phone has been emerged as a leading ICON on the convergence of consumer electronics. The various applications of mobile phone such as DMB, digital camera, video telephony and internet full browsing are servicing to consumers. To meet all the demands the image quality has been increasingly important. Mobile phone is a portable device which is widely using in both the indoor and outside environments, so it is needed to be overcome to deteriorate image quality depending on environmental light source. Furthermore touch window is popular on the mobile display panel and it makes contrast loss because of low transmittance of ITO film. This paper presents the image enhancement algorithm to be embedded on image enhancement SoC. In contrast enhancement, we propose Clipped histogram stretching method to make it adaptive with the input images, while S-shape curve and gain/offset method for the static application And CIELCh color space is used to sunlight readability enhancement by controlling the lightness and chroma components which is depended on the sensing value of light sensor. Finally the performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated by using histogram, RGB pixel distribution, entropy and dynamic range of resultant images. We expect that the proposed algorithm is suitable for image enhancement of embedded SoC system which is applicable for the small-sized mobile display.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective software education scheme for universities. The key idea of this software education scheme is to analyze software curriculum of QS world university rankings Top 10, SW-oriented university, and regional main national university. And based on the results, we propose five improvements for the effective SW education method of universities. The first is to enhance the adaptability of the industry by developing courses based on the SW developer's job analysis in the curriculum development process. Second, it is necessary to strengthen the curriculum of the 4th industrial revolution core technologies(cloud computing, big data, virtual/augmented reality, Internet of things, etc.) and integrate them with various fields such as medical, bio, sensor, human, and cognitive science. Third, programming language education should be included in software convergence course after basic syntax education to implement projects in various fields. In addition, the curriculum for developing system programming developers and back-end developers should be strengthened rather than application program developers. Fourth, it offers opportunities to participate in industrial projects by reinforcing courses such as capstone design and comprehensive design, which enables product-based self-directed learning. Fifth, it is necessary to develop university-specific curriculum based on local industry by reinforcing internship or industry-academic program that can acquire skills in local industry field.

  • Char gasification is affected by operating conditions such as reaction temperature, reactants gas partial pressure, total system pressure and particle size in addition to chemical composition and physical structure of char. The aim of the present work was to characterize the effect of coal particle size on $CO_{2}$ gasification of chars prepared from two different types of bituminous coals at different reaction temperatures(1,000-$1,400{^{\circ}C}$). Lab scale experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure in a fixed reactor where heat was supplied into a sample of char particles. When a flow of $CO_{2}$(40 vol%) was delivered into the reactor, the char reacted with $CO_{2}$ and was transformed into CO. Carbon conversion of the char was measured using a real time gas analyzer having NDIR CO/$CO_{2}$ sensor. The results showed that the gasification reactivity increased as the particle size decreased for a given temperature. The sensitivity of the reactivity to particle size became higher as the temperature increases. The size effects became remarkably prominent at higher temperatures and became a little prominent for lower reactivity coal. The particle size and coal type also affected reaction models. The shrinking core model described better for lower reactivity coal, whereas the volume reaction model described better for higher reactivity coal.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 is the one of the protocols for radio communication in a personal area network. Because of low cost and low power communication for IoT communication, it requires the highest optimization level in the implementation. Recently, the studies of location aware algorithm based on IEEE802.15.4 standard has been achieved. Location estimation is performed basically in equal consideration of reference node information and blind node information. However, an error is not calculated in this algorithm despite the fact that the coordinates of the estimated location of the blind node include an error. In this paper, we enhanced a conventual maximum likelihood estimation using weighted coefficient and implement the hardwired location aware engine for small code size and low power consumption. On the field test using test-beds, the suggested hardware based location awareness method results better accuracy by 10 percents and reduces both calculation and memory access by 30 percents, which improves the systems power consumption.

  • MODIS (Moderate Resolution Image Spectrometer) is a core satellite sensor boarded on Terra and Aqua satellite of NASA Earth Observing System since 1999 and 2001, respectively. MODIS LAI, FPAR, and GPP provide useful means to monitor plant phonology and material cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, LAI, FPAR, and GPP in Korea were evaluated and errors associated with cloud contamination on MODIS pixels were eliminated for years $2001\sim2003$. Three-year means of cloud-corrected annual GPP were 1836, 1369, and 1460g C $m^{-2}y^{-1}$ for evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, and mixed forest, respectively. The cloud-originated errors were 8.5%, 13.1%, and 8.4% for FPAR, LAI, and GPP, respectively. Summertime errors from June to September explained by 78% of the annual accumulative errors in GPP. This study indicates that cloud-originated errors should be mitigated for practical use of MODIS vegetation products to monitor seasonal and annual changes in plant phonology and vegetation production in Korea.

  • Iris recognition is that identifies a user based on the unique iris texture patterns which has the functionalities of dilating or contracting pupil region. Iris recognition systems extract the iris pattern in iris image captured by iris recognition camera. Therefore performance of iris recognition is affected by the quality of iris image which includes iris pattern. If iris image is blurred, iris pattern is transformed. It causes FRR(False Rejection Error) to be increased. Optical defocusing is the main factor to make blurred iris images. In conventional iris recognition camera, they use two kinds of focusing methods such as lilted and auto-focusing method. In case of fixed focusing method, the users should repeatedly align their eyes in DOF(Depth of Field), while the iris recognition system acquires good focused is image. Therefore it can give much inconvenience to the users. In case of auto-focusing method, the iris recognition camera moves focus lens with auto-focusing algorithm for capturing the best focused image. However, that needs additional H/W equipment such as distance measuring sensor between users and camera lens, and motor to move focus lens. Therefore the size and cost of iris recognition camera are increased and this kind of camera cannot be used for small sized mobile device. To overcome those problems, we propose method to increase DOF by iris image restoration algorithm based on focus value of iris image. When we tested our proposed algorithm with BM-ET100 made by Panasonic, we could increase operation range from 48-53cm to 46-56cm.

  • This paper proposes an illuminant-adaptive reproduction method using light adaptation and flare conditions for a mobile display. Displayed images in daylight are perceived as quite dark due to the light adaptation of the human visual system, as the luminance of a mobile display is considerably lower than that of an outdoor environment. In addition, flare phenomena decrease the color gamut of a mobile display and de-saturating the chroma. Therefore, this paper presents an enhancement method composed of lightness enhancement and chroma compensation. First, the ambient light intensity is measured using a lux-sensor, then the flare is calculated based on the reflection ratio of the display device and the ambient light intensity. To improve the perceived image, the image's luminance is transformed by linearization of the response to the input luminance according to the ambient light intensity. Next, the displayed image is compensated according to the physically reduced chroma, resulting from flare phenomena. This study presents a color reproduction method based on an inverse cone response curve and flare condition. Consequently, the proposed algorithm improves the quality of the perceived image adaptive to an outdoor environment.
