  • Determining the correct word sense among ambiguous senses is essential for semantic analysis. One of the models for word sense disambiguation is the word space model which is very simple in the structure and effective. However, when the context word vectors in the word space model are merged into sense vectors in a sense inventory, they become typically very large but still suffer from the lexical scarcity. In this paper, we propose a word sense disambiguation method using word embedding that makes the sense inventory vectors compact and efficient due to its additive compositionality. Results of experiments with a Korean sense-tagged corpus show that our method is very effective.

  • While many studies on early algebra have been conducted, there have been only a few studies on the operation sense as the fundamental element of algebraic thinking, especially the fraction operation sense. This study explored the dimensions of fraction operation sense and then investigated students' fraction operation sense. A total of 183 of sixth graders were surveyed and 5 students who showed high operation sense were clinically interviewed in order to analyze their algebraic thinking in detail. The results showed that students had a tendency to use direct calculation or employ inappropriate operation sense rather than to use the structure of operation or the relation between operations on the basis of algebraic thinking. This study implies that explicit instruction on early algebra is necessary from the elementary school years.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of calf muscle Kinesio taping on ankle joint reposition sense (JRS) and force sense (FS) in healthy elderly. Methods: Thirteen healthy elderly subjects were participated in this study. The error of ankle JRS and FS was evaluated by 3D motion capture device and digital dynamometer depending on three different taping conditions (Kinesio taping, sham taping, and no taping) respectively. All of subjects were asked to perform a proprioceptive task of ankle JRS and FS. One-way repeated ANOVA test was used to compare the error of JRS and FS depending on three different taping conditions. Results: With Kinesio taping over calf muscle, ankle joint reposition sense error and force sense error significantly decreased, if compared with a sham taping or no taping condition. Conclusion: To apply Kinesio taping over calf muscle could enhance ankle proprioceptive sense in the elderly people.

  • Despite the importance of number sense, computational skills have been emphasized in elementary mathematics curriculum. There is lack of research on number sense. Against this background, this study analyzed the way 137 sixth grade students coped with routine computation problems and with problems requiring number sense. Students performed better on the computation tasks than on the number sense tasks. With regard to the number sense tasks, many students had a tendency to implement direct computation rather than to use number sense appropriate to the given contexts. Students also had difficulties in making use of effective benchmarks or applying the knowledge of number and operation to various problem contexts. An implication is that students should explore multiple tasks requiring number sense as an integral part of their mathematics learning in order to develop number sense.

  • This paper is a research about the expression and characteristics of sense space by a phenomenological approach through body from an anthropocentric point of view. The phenomenological expression elements of sense space have been abstracted by putting the characteristics of body perception into shape through the phenomenological approach. This research aims to provide the expression and characteristics of sense space that can be applied by phenomenological elements of emotional expression, and analyze their application level by phenomenological body perception in space through corresponding examples. As a result of this research, the expressions of sense space approach - such as migration of moving lines, reiteration and segmentation of region, spatial flexibility, transferal of sense, stimulation of combined senses, symbolic abstraction of memory, perception of environment and space, time by light, phenomenal water space, time expression by surrounding environments etc. - and the characteristics of sense space according to each expression have been obtained through the phenomenological expression elements in sense space such as expansive perception by consecutive scenes, spatial and sensory experience, embodiment of place, phenomenal change by time. It aims to grope for a new approach and possibility to the embodiment and expression of sense space through the expression of sense space approach based on the phenomenological body perception.

  • The aim of this study is to look into sub-factors of spatial sense that can be contained in spatial sense of solid figure of mathematics curriculum and offer suggestions to improve teaching spatial sense of solid figures in the future. In order to attain these purposes, this study examined the meaning and sub-factors of spatial sense and the relations between spatial sense of solid figure and sub-factors of spatial sense through a theoretical consideration regarding various studies on spatial sense. Based on such examination, this study compared and analyzed textbooks used in South Korea, Finland and the Netherlands with respect to contents of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in grades, sub-factors of spatial sense, and realistic contexts for spatial sense of solid figure. In the light of such theoretical consideration and analytical results, this study provided suggestions for improving teaching spatial sense of solid figures in elementary schools in Korea as follows: extending contents regarding spatial sense of solid figures in mathematics curriculum and considering continuity between grades in textbooks, emphasizing spatial orientation as well as spatial visualization, underlining not only construction with blocks but also mental activities in mental rotation and mental transformation, comparing strength and weakness of diverse plane representations of three dimensional objects, and utilizing various realistic situations and objects in space.

  • The study aims to extract the framework of sub-factors of spatial sense, to develop test instruments based on the framework to investigate the actual spatial sense ability of fourth to sixth graders in elementary school and to analyze the results. According to the framework of sub-factors of spatial sense of the study, spatial sense has two factors of spatial visualization and spatial orientation. Spatial visualization is divided into mental rotation, mental transformation and figure-ground perception while spatial orientation is categorized into direction sense, distance sense, and location sense. Based on the framework, the test instrument for spatial sense ability was developed and the test was conducted to 430 fourth to sixth students in five elementary schools in capital areas. The following conclusions were drawn from the results obtained in the study. Firstly, the higher school year gets, the more spatial sense grows. However, spatial visualization is developed much more than spatial orientation and their order is reversed with higher graders. Secondly, the most insufficient abilities among fourth to sixth elementary school students' spatial sense were mental transformation of spatial visualization and location sense of spatial orientation. Thirdly, the reasons of differences in sub-factors of spatial sense and graders seem to be from effects of students' learning experiences of spatial sense of mathematics curriculum and the complexities of test items.

  • Recently, various researches have been attempted to effectively display pseudo-aural senses to the hearing-impaired or the deaf, using vibro-tactile stimulus as well as visual sense. Particularly, it is reported that as complementary senses to support the visual sense, tactile senses displayed by either speakers or vibration motors improve the reality sense significantly but do not nearly improve the emotional sense. Thus, in this study, the thermal sense is selected as another complementary sense to support the pseudo-aural sense display and it is investigated whether the thermal sense could generate a pseudo-aural sense or not. For this purpose, a thermal display module which could effectively display the desired thermal sense is implemented. Then, experiments have been conducted to subjects, which provide them with various types of stimuli combined with the aural, the vibrotactile, and the thermal stimuli along with the visual information. It can be confirmed, through statistical analysis on the data collected from experiments, that subjects could feel a pseudo-thermal sense closer to the real thermal sense which the normal subject feel from both the visual and the aural information, particularly either i) with the thermal stimulus along with the visual information or ii) with both the thermal and the vibrotactile stimuli along with the visual information than only with the visual information. Conclusively, it can be confirmed that the thermal stimulus applied to the skin of the subjects could play a role of effectively displaying pseudo-aural sense related to the thermal sense, as an complementary media for the pseudo-aural display.

  • Mathematics education emphasizes on nurturing number sense, but researches on this have been scarce, and most of them has been confined to elementary level students. This thesis, therefore, tried to analyze how elementary students solve mathematics sense problems in order to give some insight into how to teach number sense. For this, this thesis categorized into two ways of using number sense and algorithm as problem solving, and analyzed students' responses using test sheets. Accordingly, middle school students showed higher score on the number sense test and higher rates of using number sense than elementary students. In addition, students showing higher achievement used both number sense and algorithm, but those of lower achievement were more likely to use only algorithm. Plus, among students showing higher achievement, middle school students used more number sense than elementary school students, but there was not meaningful difference among those showing lower achievement. Lastly, It was shown that there was difference in the rate using number sense according to the number sense components.
