Purpose: This is a descriptive survey research study that identifies the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational and community factors affecting the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in community-dwelling seniors. Methods: The study used data from a 2017 national survey of senior citizens, and includes 10,299 subjects aged 65 years or more. Complex sampling was performed to increase accuracy of the population, and hierarchical logistic regression was performed to identify the factors affecting IADL in seniors. Results: Amongst the organizational and community factors, we determined that the number of health centers, welfare facilities for senior citizens, hospital beds, and community sport facilities affected IADL in seniors, even after adjusting for intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. Conclusion: Helping seniors to maintain IADL independence for a longer duration is essential for their physical and social independence. Therefore, when establishing and developing policies for health promotion programs, efforts should be undertaken to actively reflect the level of IADL functions, and to create an accessible health and medical welfare environment by considering characteristics of senior citizens for operating programs.

Wearable biosensors have the potential to non-invasively and continuously monitor seniors' stress in their daily interaction with the urban environment, thereby enabling to address the stress and ultimately advance their outdoor mobility. However, current wearable biosensor-based stress detection methods have several drawbacks in field application due to their dependence on batch-learning algorithms. First, these methods train a single classifier, which might not account for multiple subjects' different physiological reactivity to stress. Second, they require a great deal of computational power to store and reuse all previous data for updating the signle classifier. To address this issue, we tested the feasibility of online multi-task learning (OMTL) algorithms to identify multiple seniors' stress from electrodermal activity (EDA) collected by a wristband-type biosensor in a daily trip setting. As a result, OMTL algorithms showed the higher test accuracy (75.7%, 76.2%, and 71.2%) than a batch-learning algorithm (64.8%). This finding demonstrates that the OMTL algorithms can strengthen the field applicability of the wearable biosensor-based stress detection, thereby contributing to better understanding the seniors' stress in the urban environment and ultimately advancing their mobility.
Purpose: This study is to analyze the preferences for future senior housing that reflects the characteristics of the new generation of seniors and to consider the direction of future senior housing. Methods: Data from an online survey of a new generation of older adults and group interviews with professionals and baby boomers were analyzed. The data collected from the survey and interview have been using quantitative analysed method. Literature surveys also have been carried out. Results: The results show that future senior housing requires a change in perception through conceptual expansion from the Aging in Place (AIP) to the Aging in Community (AIC) paradigm. The preferences of the new generation of seniors for future senior housing were examined to determine their preferences for location, facility size and type, unit floor plans and services, and living costs. Implications: The direction of senior housing services and architectual plans for seniors aged 55 to 65 years old were discussed.
It is expected that the market of residential facility for retired seniors will be a new investment field for construction firms. This study describes the questionnaire survey analysis results of potential customers' demand for the facility. For comparison purpose, direct construction cost was estimated by estimation experts. In addition, a case analysis was conducted to compare direct cost and indirect project cost with the experts' estimation. According to the questionnaire survey analysis, it is observed that there were significant differences in demand between groups which are classified by the regions, living expenditures, the level of property ownership and the scales of residence. From an investor's perspective, investment decision on residential facility for retired seniors should be made considering bothe the level of returns which can be generated from the investment and the customers' needs.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the LOHAS tendency of new seniors' and its effects on the attitude and purchase intention for environmental-friendly food materials. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from random sample of 162 senior customers in Seoul and Kyunggi area. The LOHAS tendency of new seniors can be divided into three factors; environmental-friendly, sustainability and sociality. Environmental problems affected the environmental-friendly factor the most while manufacturing techniques for sustainable products and recycling habits were key variables for the sustainability factor. The idea of companies sharing their value system of LOHAS tendency was the most significant for the sociality factor. Each of these LOHAS tendency factors influenced the purchase intention of the new seniors.
The study aims to examine how everyday life skills of disabled seniors in rural areas affect their depression and self-esteem through their quality of life and explores how to improve the quality of life of disabled seniors. To achieve this, 238 participants who were registered as disabled and aged 65 or over took part in this research. Results showed that the quality of life among disabled seniors decreased when their everyday life skills were relatively more advanced than those of non-disabled people. It was also found that the high level of everyday life skills possessed by disabled seniors caused more severe depression and lower self-esteem. Their quality of life negatively affected self-esteem and depression and their everyday life skills were a key factor that influenced depression and self-esteem.
Purpose: This study examined the socio-demographic and health factors affecting the quit-smoking plan in smoking seniors. Methods: Data were obtained from the Seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (VII-1, VII-2, VII-3). The sample consisted of 369 smoking seniors. The complex sample was analyzed thought an independent t-test, Chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: The influential factors on the quit-smoking plan were daily smoking (OR=0.30, CI=0.11-0.78), age of start smoking (OR=1.06, CI=1.01-1.11), daily smoking amount (OR=0.95, CI=0.90-1.00), quit-smoking trial (OR=2.63, CI=1.32-5.23), and cognitive stress (OR=2.13, CI=1.01-4.54). Conclusion: This study revealed the variables that should be considered when setting up a smoking cessation plan for smoking seniors. Based on this, an elderly cessation intervention program can be developed.
We examined the decision-making capacity of seniors of consent to oriental clinical research. This study was performed in order to improve the quality of ethical aspects before obtaining informed consent. Oriental investigators interviewed 251 seniors who participated in Sasang clinical research. The questionnaire was about the capacity of consent and the subjective awareness of informed consent. Two hundred fifteen out of 250 questionnaires were collected. One hundred thirty four(62.3%) seniors had the capacity of consent to research and 81(37.7%) seniors did not pass. The subjective awareness of informed consent in having the capacity group is $78.02{\pm}12.92$ and not having group is $72.17{\pm}9.17$. The investigation of senior capacity of consent was aimed at protecting seniors' interests and completing investigators' ethical responsibilities. This study found that only 62.3% of senior participants had the capacity of consent. This investigation will be expected to raise the importance of seniors' capacity of consent. Also we expect methods and procedures for capacity assessment of informed consent to be followed for increasing quality of clinical research.
Objective : The objective of this study is to develop a Qigong exercise program to reinforce musculoskeletal system of seniors appropriate for physical strength and conditions of seniors aged 65 years or above based on health Qigong exercise of oriental medicine. Method : Qigong exercise motions that can improve strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance of seniors were developed by primarily performing literature review of Qigong experts on the fields like oriental medicine, Qigong exercise, physical education and health science and secondarily using motion training for increased validity of motions. Results : The Qigong exercise program for musculoskeletal system of seniors was designed with 12 motions repeated 8 times and 20 minutes per session, including shoulder exercises (alternate turning of left and right shoulders, turning both arms back and forth, holding and lifting elbow to put it aside), waist exercises (wrapping the head with hands to bow, twisting waist while looking at the tip of hand, large spinning of ball, putting hands together to pull back), and knee exercises (going up a down while lifting a rock, balancing the body while lifting a knee, lifting and spreading knees while drawing circle with arms, raising both arms to the side while lifting heels, breathing). Conclusion : Once the effects of Qigong exercise for musculoskeletal system of seniors developed in this study are tested, the program is expected to contribute to development of Qigong exercise, a core part of oriental medicine health improvement project.
