  • Functional neurology is a function-oriented clinical neurology with a focus on the viability, functionality, and balance of the neurologic system, which may be considered as a form of yin-yang balance medicine like Korean medicine. While it incorporates knowledge systems such as developmental neurology, neuropsychology, comparative neuroanatomy, and others, it views the neurologic system and the body as an individually different, self-regulating mechanism with the help of the active balancing mechanism within the nervous system and between the individual and the environment, which view is at the core of its effort to improve and serve the human dignity based on the best possible functioning nervous system. This article reviews core concepts of the functional neurology, discusses yin-yang balance medicine perspectives and clinical applications of it.

  • This paper presents a framework for decentralized control of self-organizing swarm agents based on the artificial potential functions (APFs). The framework explores the benefits by associating agents based on position information to realize complex swarming behaviors. A key development is the introduction of a set of association rules by APFs that effectively deal with a host of swarming issues such as flexible and agile formation. In particular, this paper presents an association rule for swarming that requires less movements for each agent and compact formation among agents. Extensive simulations are presented to illustrate the viability of the proposed framework.

  • Subcutaneous emphysema is an unusual and rarely reported complication of tonsillectomy. The more commen complications are hemorrhage, infection and following anesthesia, aspiration, cardiac arrhythmia, and laryngeal trauma can occur. Posttonsillectomy subcutaneous emphysema results directly from the introduction of air into the tonsillar bed either during the surgical procedure itself or in the postoperative period. This condition is generally benign and self limiting and usually requires treatment only for the primary respiratory disease. In this report, we describe a 40-year-old female patient in whom subcutaneous emphysema developed shortly after tonsillectomy. She was observed for 5 days, at which point subcutaneous emphysema was seen on the follow up soft tissue neck X-ray to disappeared.

  • The precast prestressed concrete girders of I-type section are frequently employed to design the short-to-medium span bridge. However, its beam depth is greatly increased as its span length is increased over than about 30m. Therefore, the economic and aesthetic effectiveness are rapidly decreased in case of the span length over 30m. The purpose of this paper is to verify the structural safety on the new spliced two span bridge and analyze the variation of member forces and stress distribution according to the construction stages and time. The new spliced technique is performed by partial post tensioning and release in the U-type girders. The structural characteristics of this technique is the introduction of secondary moment to reduce the bending moment by self weight of precast U-type girders constructed in simply supported beam type. So, it is expected that the structural efficiency of this spliced bridge may be improved more than other techniques.

  • In order to study the new curriculum, as well as to help teachers understand new textbooks well, the authors make horizontal comparisons between Editions A and B of Experimental Mathematics (2) textbook in ordinary senior high schools (Grades 10-12) of PEP Edition, which focuses on the topic of line slope. The interview was made with 11 selected teachers who are teaching the content in the light of Edition B. It was found that there are obvious differences in the introduction of concepts and the exercises. The interviews showed that teachers were familiar to the contents of Edition A and saw it reasonable, because few differences are found between Edition A and the old Edition. The teachers also viewed that though the contents of Edition B were easy and fit to self-educated, but its reasoning is not clear, and the examples are not enough so that the teachers need to add additional examples.

  • The study was done to find out if there's any correlation between the results of the state-run college entrance examination called "suneung," or college scholastic ability test (CSAT) and the frequency of errors of the medical and nursing students. These two groups of students were subjects for the research. The study was based on the writing of fresh year students who were required to take four-credit-hour English course. These students' writing, particularly their self introduction, was analyzed to see if medical students (the high-scored) made fewer errors on the writing and nursing students (the medium-scored) made more critical errors or vice versa, and furthermore, if the results of the scores had any correlation on the critical errors in writing. The concern of the study was also to explain the attributable factors of the outcome if the high-scored of CSAT actually made fewer errors as well as the types of critical errors made and ways to minimize them.

  • At present, agriculture in Korea is experiencing difficulties, such as a stagnation in farm income, an increase in imported agricultural products, a decrease in arable land, a decrease in the self-sufficiency rate of grain, a decrease in rural population, and aging. To solve these problems and vitalize the rural economy, our government is promoting its 6th industrialization policy, which links agriculture with primary industry, secondary, industry and tertiary industry, and as well as smart agriculture based on information and communication technology. Smart agriculture is an agriculture form used to improve the quality of life in rural areas through making greater efficiency and intelligence by applying ICT convergence technology to the whole entire process of agricultural production, distribution, and consumption in the areas of outdoor agriculture, facility horticulture, and livestock. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the policy, technology, and standardization trends of domestic and foreign smart agriculture, and suggest ways to apply them to domestic smart agriculture during the in the introduction stage.

  • Premed education in the college of medicine at the Catholic University of Korea aims to promote student creativity and excellence in accordance with the mission of the college: to have a sense of calling, leadership, and competency. The Catholic Medical College premed curriculum includes 75 credits which are composed of 65 credits for required courses and 10 credits for elective courses. It consists of courses in basic science, medical science, liberal arts and humanities (premedical OMNIBUS). It also involves community programs in 'Vision and Mission,' 'Leadership Training,' and 'Academic Conference.' In addition, students are allowed self-directed choice of their courses and learning for one quarter.

  • There has been a strong demand on more economic and lower depth girder bridges for short and medium span range, PRECOM, which is a new type steel-concrete composite girder, has been developed to realize a more economic bridge system with a lower depth girder. In the PRECOM girder bridge, a steel plate girder is simply supported and then concrete form is hung to girder. Thus, the self-weight of the concrete is loaded to the steel girder. To increase the resistance of concrete in the lower casing against tensile stress, compressive force is introduced by prestressed tendon To evaluate the manufacturability and performances of the completed bridge, four 15-m girders and a bridge specimen with two 20m girders wvere constructed. The camber during the construction and introduction of an appropriate compressive force was evaluated. Dynamic data were obtained through the modal testing of the completed girders. Static loading test was also conducted to examine cracks and evaluate the decrease in stiffness and failure behavior under extreme conditions.

  • In tobacco, in vitro pollination has been successfully applied to overcome interspecific incompatibility. The use of this technique will make it possible to introduce DNA into pollen tubes just before fertilization. In this study, we showed improvement of the efficiency of in vitro self-pollination and introduction of foreign genes into pollen tubes by the method of polycation. A plasmid harbouring the GUS gene was introduced into pollen grains and pollen tubes, which had incubated on pollen germination medium(PGM), by polyornithine method. Transient expression of the GUS in pollen grains and pollen tubes that were treated with 0, 2, 5 and $10{\mu}g/m\ell$ DNA was observed. In results, combination of the techniques of polyornithine and in vitro pollination was efficient new technique for genetic transformation through fertilization processes.
