  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate the learning contracts based self-directed learning in a final clinical placement for senior nursing students. Methods: This study was a case study and 82 senior nursing students at a university participated in a learning contract based practice placement. Data were collected from written learning contracts and questionnaires after a clinical practice. Results: The students' learning needs were knowledge, clinical skills, and attitudes frequently encountered in a ward in which clinical skills were most common. The students' formulated learning contracts were varied but most of them were basic and simple. A self-directed clinical course was beneficial and a satisfactory experience to senior students. There was an increase in the students' motivation in learning, confidence in own capability, and satisfaction with the use of the learning contract. Conclusion: Self-directed clinical practicum would result in a degree of attitude change in the students. This study suggests that learning contract based self-directed clinical practice is effective to improve learning satisfaction, confidence in own capability, and competency.

  • Self-directed learning in mathematics education is crucial because it enables students to think creatively and critically while continuously improving. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of class attitude and class satisfaction in mathematics on the relationship between mathematics teacher characteristics and self-directed learning. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine whether these structural relationships differ between male and female student groups. To achieve this, the theoretical model was tested using the 9th-year data (high school 3rd grade) of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study (SELS) 2010, comprising 2,325 students (1,187 males and 1,138 females). The results revealed that the mediating effects of mathematics class attitude and class satisfaction on the relationship between teacher characteristics in mathematics and high school students' self-directed learning were significant. At this time, the direct effect of mathematics teacher characteristics on selfdirected learning was not significant, indicating that mathematics class attitude and class satisfaction had full mediating effects. Multi-group analysis results showed no significant differences in path coefficients between male and female student groups. Based on the research findings, implications for teacher education were presented to improve high school students' self-directed learning abilities in mathematics education, focusing on the mediating effects of affective factors in the classroom.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between parental attitudes, teachers' autonomy support as perceived by high school students, and the self-directed learning abilities of high school students. A total of 341 high school students from South Korea participated in the study. A survey instrument was used to measure parental attitudes, teacher autonomy support, and students' self-directed learning ability. The results of the study are as follows. First, the rearing attitudes of parents were perceived by the participants as oriented more toward being attainable and relatively less self-directed. There were no significant differences between male and female students, though male students were more likely to perceive their parents' attitudes as more attainable-oriented. The results also show that, in terms of self-directed learning skills among high school students, the more goal-oriented, compassionate, and autonomous the parental attitudes are, the likelier are students to have developed self-directed learning skills. Second, the male students were more aware of the autonomy support of teachers than were the female students. This shows that the results have significant predictive power over the self-directed learning ability among high school students. Accordingly, the perception of autonomy support by teachers affects the development of self-directed learning among students. We can therefore conclude that self-directed learning skills develop most effectively in students who are supported by their teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of PBL (Problem-based Learning) strategy applied to the "Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory" class. Especially, the changes in 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitudes toward science' of undergraduate students were examined. In addition, perception on PBL problem and the PBL classes were investigated. The results of this study were as follows: First, after the course, 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitude toward science' of students were significantly improved (p < .05). There were significant improvements in every sub-categories except 'self-confidence as a learner' for 'self directed learning ability' and every sub-categories except 'usefulness of science' for 'attitude toward science'. Second, the students expressed that PBL strategy provided opportunities to learn self-directively and responsibly, but the process of defining the problem was difficult. Finally on the survey toward PBL strategy, the students responded that PBL problems were authentic and helpful to learn problem solving ability. In conclusion, PBL laboratory course is effective for developing self-directed learning ability and positive attitude toward science.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mathematical instruction using GSP program on the symmetrical figures learning and self-directed learning attitude. According to the pretest result, the experiment group and the comparison group showed to be homogeneous groups. The experiment group has learned symmetrical figures for 9 hours using the GSP program and the comparison group has learned for 9 hours using the traditional method(paper and pen lesson). As the posttests, self-directed learning attitude test and symmetry figure understanding test were performed. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, there was a significant difference in symmetry figure understanding test between the experiment group which learned through GSP program and the comparison group which learned through traditional method. Since there showed a very high achievement in the experiment group which learned using GSP, it can be inferred that GSP was very effective in the lessons of symmetrical movements. Second, there was a significant difference in self-directed learning attitude test between the experiment group and the comparison group. This seems to be because the length of the sides of the figures, size of the angles of the figures etc can be verified instantly and the students can correct by themselves and give feedbacks when they use GSP program. Students preferred drawing using the GSP over drawing using rulers and pencils, and they showed interest in the GSP program and they did not have burden in being wrong in their study and studied in various methods. And as they become familiar with the GSP program, they even studied other contents beyond the scope presented in the textbook.

  • In this study, after Library-Assisted Instruction is set out and executed, it is surveyed and verified the connection between Learning Attitude and Life competence. This study indicates that Learning Attitude and Life skills of Library-Assisted Instruction have close correlation and the extension of Life competence(Communication, Problem Solving. Self-Directed Learning) is under the influence of Learning Attitude. This study suggests that cooperative learning, Information Processing Model and constructivism learning theory have to be adopted as a means of increasing more educational effects and extensions of Library-Assisted Instruction.

  • Compared with other subjects, mathematics has great differences in achieve-ment. In hope of solving this problems, most schools try the level-movement learning. Although they say it may have some effect because of its homogeneous group, the level groups still have differences in achievement in their students abilities. So, this study aims to present an appropriate tasks for the advanced, intermediate and beginner groups and to help self-directed learning by selecting an appropriate tasks for the students' own level. To achieve thiese goals, a great deal of level tasks were developed and given to the students. After lettins them an select appropriate tasks for their own level and perform self-directed learning, the tasks were measured carefully for their interest, attitude and achievement in learning. Consequently, we tried a new method to improve uniformity and to turn teacher-centered learning into student-centered learning. The following is the conclusion to this study. First, self-directed learning based on the selection of level tasks has meaningful effects on learning achievement in mathematics, especially for the beginner group. Second, though the above method did not improve an interest for mathematics, but was very effective in the improvement of learning attitudes.

  • The aim of this study was to improve the 'self-directed learning ability and attitudeselementary school students by applying a brain education-based learning program based on brain science in the form of a short term camp in consideration of the elementary school students' brain characteristics and mechanisms. For this purpose, this study was conducted on 4, 5, and 6 elementary school students in Korea. The brain training based learning camp program was conducted for two nights and three days. The camps were conducted twice from February 3 to 5, 2017 with 45 students from grade 6 and from February 22 to July 24, 2017, with 56 students from grades 4 and 5, 101 students in total. The conclusions of this study are as follows. The brain education-based learning camp program was found to be effective in improving the elementary school students' self-directed learning ability and learning attitude. First, the brain education-based learning camp program can increase the learning concentration through brain gymnastics, breathing, and meditation. Second, brain training called 'Brain Screen' among the brain education-based learning camp program can improve the brain ability of memory. Third, it can establish a self - directed learning philosophy of 'My study is done by me' by giving reason and motivation to study through the brain education-based learning camp program.
