Purpose: This study was aimed to compare nursing competency, self-esteem, and job stress between floating nurses and clinical nurses. Methods: The data were collected between October $1^{st}$ and December $31^{st}$, 2015, from 43 floating nurses and 57 clinical nurses working at a tertiary care hospital in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 23.0, using descriptive statistics and the t-test, $x^2$ test, ANCOVA, ANOVA, $Scheffe{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: The nursing competency of clinical nurses was significantly higher than that of floating nurses (F=4.370, p=.039). For both floating and clinical nurses, nursing competency was positively correlated with self-esteem (floating nurses, r=.47, p=.002; clinical nurses, r=.62, p<.001). Also, For both floating and clinical nurses, the most significant predictor of nursi ng competency was self-esteem(floating nurses, ${\beta}=0.45$, p=.001; clinical nurses, ${\beta}=0.60$, p<.001). Conclusi on: Efforts are needed to increase the nursing competency of the floating nurse through the improvement of the floating system, the nursing work environment, and continuous education. Also, as self- esteem is the most effective predictor of nursing competence, nursing intervention is needed to improve self-esteem of the floating nurse.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of demographic variables (gender, SES, period of residence in Korea, place of residence, type of program, Korean ability), self-esteem, and acculturative stress on the college adaptation of international college students in Korea. 346 (196 male, 150 female) students from three universities in Jeollanam province completed the Self-Esteem, Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students and The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). While gender had no influence on the college adaptation of international college students, SES, period of residence in Korea, place of residence, type of program and Korean ability had significant influences. Also it was found that acculturative stress, type of program, self-esteem and place of residence had significant influence on academic adaptation whereas self-esteem, acculturative stress, type of program, and Korean ability had significant influences on social adaptation. Related to emotional adaptation, acculturative stress, place of residence, and self-esteem were significant variables. Objectives: Suicide is the most frequent cause of death among Korean adolescents, and adolescents who have experienced trauma have an increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, and suicide attempts. However, resilience and self-esteem are protective factors. We examined the effects of resilience and self-esteem on the relationship among traumatic experiences, PTSD symptoms, depression, and suicidal ideation. Methods: Middle-school students (n=403) completed questionnaires assessing traumatic experiences, PTSD symptoms, depression, suicidal ideation, resilience, and self-esteem. Path analysis was performed to investigate the mediating effects of PTSD symptoms, resilience, self-esteem, and depression on the relationship between trauma exposure and suicidal ideation. Results: Traumatic experience was positively correlated with PTSD symptoms, depression, and suicidal ideation. PTSD symptoms and depression were positively correlated with suicidal ideation. The relationship between traumatic experiences and suicidal ideation was mediated by PTSD symptoms, which had both direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation; the indirect effect was mediated by resilience, self-esteem, and depression. Conclusion: Korean adolescents who had experienced trauma were more likely to develop PTSD symptoms, increasing their risk of depression and suicidal ideation. However, self-esteem and resilience may help protect against depression and suicidal ideation. Our findings could inform suicide prevention initiatives.
This study examines the effect of satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities on social withdrawal with a focus on the mediating effect of self-esteem and sense of community. We used data from the 3rd wave (2012) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) collected by the National Youth Policy Institute for path analysis. Participants were 1,139 first year middle school students who participated in adolescent extracurricular activities. First, the degree of satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem. Second, satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via a sense of community. Lastly, satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem and a sense of community. The research findings indicate that the level of social withdrawal is less when adolescents are satisfied with adolescent extracurricular activities and have a high level of self-esteem and sense of community. The results demonstrate that a satisfactory level of adolescent extracurricular activity would help adolescents decrease their social withdrawal by increasing the level of self-esteem and sense of community.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with career maturity among Korean high school students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted using secondary data from the 2012 Korean Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS). The participants were 496 high school students who completed the supplemental survey for children, which included items on career maturity, self-esteem, study stress, teacher attachment, relationship with parents, peer attachment, depression and anxiety. Descriptive statistics, the chi-square-test, the t-test, and a decision tree were used for data analysis. Results: The decision tree identified five final nodes predicting career maturity after forcing self-esteem as the first variable. The highest predicted rate of high career maturity was associated with high self-esteem, experience of career counseling, and high teacher attachment. The lowest predicted rate of high career maturity was associated with low self-esteem and low attachment to friends. Conclusion: Factors influencing career maturity were varied by levels of self-esteem in Korean high school students. Thus, it is necessary to develop different approaches to enhance career maturity according to levels of self-esteem.
Objective: This study examined the mediating effect of adolescents' self-esteem on the relationship between their childhood abuse experiences and school rule-breaking behavior. Methods: The research participants consisted of 1,748 adolescents aged from 15 to 16. Adolescents' school rule-breaking behavior and self-esteem were measured in 2016, whereas their childhood abuse experiences were measured in 2010. Panel data collected by the National Youth Policy Institute were analyzed using the bootstrapping technique and PROCESS Macro for SPSS. Results: The results of the study are as follows. First, the adolescents' childhood abuse experiences affected their school rule-breaking behavior. That is, the adolescents who were abused by their parents were at higher risk of breaking school rules later in life. Second, the adolescents' self-esteem mediated the relationship between their childhood abuse experiences and school rule-breaking behavior. The adolescents who were abused by their parents tend to have low levels of self-esteem and thereby break school rules. Conclusion/Implications: The present study shows the possibility that childhood abuse experiences lead to adolescents' problematic behaviors, such as school rule violation. It also indicates that it is necessary to provide counseling and therapeutic interventions for enhancing the self-esteem of adolescents of the at-risk group with childhood abuse experiences.
