The purpose of this study was not only to identify the level of health literacy, self-management knowledge and self-care behavior, but also to identify the relations those variables in elders with hemodialysis. The subjects of this study are 193 patients from dialysis clinics of nine hospitals in Incheon who aging over 60 years old. Data collection was conducted by using Health Literacy Scale, Self-Management Knowledge Scale, and Self-Care Behavior Scale. The data were analysed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS statistics 23.0 program. In the results, average score of subjects' health literacy, self-management knowledge and self-care behavior were 13.66(±2.09), 13.33(±1.85) and 63.95(±10.32), respectively. There were significant positive correlation between self-management knowledge and health literacy (r=0.37, p<.001) and reading comprehension part which is subscale in health literacy (r=.25, p=.001). Also, there was significant positive correlation between self-management knowledge and self-care behavior (r=0.15, p<.05). According to the above results, for improving the self-care behaviors in elders with hemodialysis, it is necessary to provide tailored education based on his/her level of health literacy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a face-to-face self-management educational program on knowledge, self-care practice and kidney function in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) before kidney replacement therapy. Methods: This study employed a nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized design. Data were collected from 61 patients with CKD visiting an outpatient department of nephrology in a university hospital in Seoul, South Korea. The experimental group (n=31) took the pre-test, then after 3 weeks, face-to-face education and individualized consultation (1st intervention), after a week of self-practice, the 1st post-test, followed by re-enforcement education and consultation (2nd intervention), and 4 weeks later, the 2nd post-test. The control group (n=30) took the pre-test and post-tests at 4 and 8 weeks. Results: Scores for knowledge of CKD and self-care practice over time improved significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. Kidney function did not improve significantly in the experimental group. Conclusion: Health care providers can identify various and individualized needs, and provide effective education and consultation through face to face self-management for patients with chronic irreversible illnesses. Nurses can coordinate for these program by designing and providing systematic and effective education.

This study was a descriptive research on the level of self-care available to continous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients (hereinafter referred to as 'CAPD patient') related to the specific area of infection management. The method employed for the collection of data was a modified instrument of the self-care survey essentially based on Young Sook Choi's instrument. The relevant data was collected from september 1, 1996 to september 30, 1996. The subjects were provided with an open-ended question regarding the reasons behind why they did not seek self-care. The answers provided about self-care compliance were analyzed by SPSS for frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, ANOVA. Reasons for non-compliance were analyzed by content analysis. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The percentage of patients engaging in self-care were according to the following self performed tasks : preparation of dialysis : 30.58 points Dialysate exchange procedures : 49.40 points - Two bag type : 50.50 points - Spike type : 48.80 points - Neo type : 48.90 points Catheter exit site care : 25.13 points More specifically, in relation to the preparation of dialysis as referred to above, those patients engaging in self care was relatively high with respect to the cleaning of the dialysis before use and for the preservation of peritosol. However, in dialysate exchange procedures, data revealed that those patients engaging in self-care are relatively low with respect to putting on a mask during the performance of peritosol exchange. Similary in peritosol exchange procedure and catheter exit care, low levels of self-care performance were found in the area of putting on a mask during the peritosol exchange procedures and catheter line testing procedures, respectively. 2. In general characteristics, there appeared to be no distinction in self-care compliance among CAPD patients. 3. The main reasons for non-compliance were based in the following factor : intellectual, attitude, enviromental surrounding and physical. As a result of the foregoing finding, nurses should provide adequate assistance to promote self-care compliance by CAPD patients by checking the preparation of dialysis, dialysate exchange procedure, and catheter exit site care which recieved low point in this research.
This study examined the relationship between the level of hardiness and self-care agency of persons with a colostomy. The purpose of the study was to explore the effect of hardiness on self-care agency of persons with a colostomy and to identity factors influencing on. The ultimate goal was to help nurses improve the person's self-care agency and to contribute theoretical base for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to increase the level of self care. The subjects for the study consisted of 43 persons aged above eighteen below seventy had had Miles operation and permanent colostomy. The data were collected from July, 1998 to September 15, 1998. The instruments used for this study were the Health-Related Hardiness (Pollock, 1984) and the Self-carer As Inventory Scale(Genden & Taylor, 1988). The Self-Carer As Inventory translated by So Hyang-sook and was modified by author of this study. The data were analysed by using SAS computerlized program and included number, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Hardiness was significantly related to Self-care agency(r=-0.531. p=0.0002). That is, the higher the hardiness, the higher the level of Self-care agency. 2. In the relationship between general characteristics and traits of persons with a colostomy and hardiness were significant difference in monthly income (F=2.79, p=0.03), problem in stoma management (F=3.29, p=0.01). 3. In the relationship between general characteristics and traits of persons with a colostomy and Self-care agency were significant difference in monthly income (F=2.93, p=0.03), problem in stoma management(F=2.93, p=0.01). Therefore, in order to increase the level of Self-care agency of ostomate Nurses should be helpful to provide them with hardiness training to strengthen their control, commitment and challenge(subconcepts of hardiness).
The purpose of this study was to investigate correlation with self-care behaviors and physiological index according to cognitive function of hemodialysis patients. The data were collected from 108 patients on hemodialysis in university hospital. The period of data collection was from January 4 to January 31, 2010. The instruments of research were MMSE, Self-care behavior scale for hemodialysis patients. The 17.6% of patients showed the cognitive disorder. Self-care behaviors of patients showed that normal cognitive function group was significantly higher than dysfunction group. Creatinine and parathyroid hormone of patients showed that normal cognitive function group was significantly lower than dysfunction group. The cognitive function of patients showed positive correlations with self-care behavior(r=.283, p=.003) and Kt/V(r=.214. p=.026), showed significant negative correlations with phosphorus(r=-.223, p=.020) and creatinine(r=-.318, p=.001). The results of this study can be used to develop nursing education program to improve self-care behaviors according to cognitive function of hemodialysis patients.

Purpose: This study was done to investigate the degree of self-care, family support and depression, and relationship among these variables for elder with diabetes mellitus. Method: Participants were 202 diabetic patients, 65 years or over, living in Seoul, Korea. Data were collected using the self-care tool for diabetic patients by Kim (1996), the family support tool for diabetic patients by Park (1984), and Korea's BDI scale by Lee (1995). Results: Of the patients, 43.1% showed HbAlc levels than higher 7%. The highest mean score was for self-care for medication compliance, and the lowest for blood glucose testing compliance. Factors affecting self-care were employment, education, HbAlc level, diabetic self-care education and complications. Factors affecting family support were living with family, diabetic self-care education, hospitalization and complications. Factors affecting depression were gender, living with family and complications. All of these factors were significant. Patients experiencing depression were 16.8% of patients. There was a significant positive correlation between self-care and family support, and significant negative correlations between self-care and depression, and family support and depression. Conclusion: For more effective management of diabetes mellitus in elders, improvement in self-care compliance, and family support are needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide nursing intervention with basic data extracted through investigating self-care and nursing of lymphedema in patient who have had a mastectomy. Method: The subjects for this study consisted of 214 mastectomy patients in 2 hospitals. The data were collected from December 1, 2004 to February 28, 2005. The instruments used for this study were both the Self-care Practice Scale by Cho, Myoung-Ok et al.(2003) which we modified and the Nursing Evaluation Scale developed by the researchers. Results: The mean score of self-care on lymphedema was $59.96{\pm}12.46$ The mean score of nursing was $25.64{\pm}9.25$ Factors influencing the self-care were the postoperative period (F=17.505, p<.001), the location of the tumor (F=3.826, p=.023), menstruation (t=7.333, p=.007), and complications (F=5.427, p<.001). Conclusion: Self-care and nursing care on the lymphedema management were shown to be lower than expected. Especially, the score of self-care was the lowest in the more than 3 year postoperative period. Therefore, the longer the postoperative period is, the more active management on lymphedema needs to be. Also, education should be given to both nurses and patients on the importance of self-care on lymphedema with mastectomies.

Purpose: Patients with chronic hepatitis B need lifelong health care because of progressive liver damage. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with self-management compliance among patients with chronic hepatitis B. Methods: The research was a cross-sectional, descriptive design using questionnaires. The participants were 118 patients with chronic hepatitis B from outpatient department in a tertiary hospital. Their ages ranged from 20 to 64. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression with PASW statistics 19.0 program. Results: There were statistically significant differences in self management compliance by gender, age, job, alcohol consumption, and smoking. A positive correlation existed between self-management compliance, awareness of the importance of management, and self efficacy. Stepwise multiple regression analysis for self-management compliance revealed that the most powerful predictor was self efficacy. Self efficacy, age, and alcohol consumption explained 37.5% of the variance. Conclusion: The results indicate a need to promote self-management compliance with these participants. The findings also suggest that consideration be given to characteristics of age and alcohol consumption in developing strategies for enhancing self efficacy and developing programs to promote self-management for patients with chronic hepatitis B.
Purpose: This study was done to verify the effects of a self-regulation program for management of hypertension. Method: Thirty patients with hypertension registered in a community health center were selected as the experiment group, and control group were patients in another community health center, matched for age and gender. The self-regulation program included daily blood pressure checks, periodic counseling, and health education. A self-check digital device with instructions was provided for self-monitoring of blood pressure, and the participants were interviewed before they took part in the program. Results: The first hypothesis was supported: There will be a greater reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure for patients with hypertension who participate in the self-regulation program compared to patients in the control group. The second hypothesis was also supported: Patients with hypertension who participate in the self-regulation program will perform self-care activities better than those in the control group. Conclusion: The findings indicate that a self-regulation program reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure and improves self-care in patients with hypertension. It is recommended that this self-regulation program be used in community health clinics for management of hypertension and prevention of complications.
