  • In this paper, we propose a customized genetic algorithm (GA) to find the minimum-cost guideway network (GN) of personal rapid transit (PRT) subject to connectivity, reliability, and traffic capacity constraints. PRT is a novel transportation concept, where a number of automated taxi-sized vehicles run on an elevated GN. One of the most important problems regarding PRT is how to design its GN topology for given station locations and the associated inter-station traffic demands. We model the GN as a directed graph, where its cost, connectivity, reliability, and node traffics are formulated. Based on this formulation, we develop the GA with special genetic operators well suited for the GN design problem. Such operators include steady state selection, repair algorithm, and directed mutation. We perform numerical experiments to determine the adequate GA parameters and compare its performance to other optimization algorithms previously reported. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach for the GN design problem having up to 210 links.

  • An experimental apparatus for the removal of $SO_2$ gas using microporous hollow-fiber membrane G-L contactors was setup. Various performance experiments were carried out with commercial membrane modules and the membrane modules made by KIER. The $SO_2$ removal efficiency was outstanding. When the hollow-fiber membrane was used for the removal of $SO_2$, the selection of absorbers and additives, membrane material, operating conditions of membrane manufacture were significant variables to develop optimal G-L contactors. More experiment works will be done for the development of compact, cost-effective and better G-L contactors.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new combinatorial auction mechanism - N-Bilateral Optimized Combinatorial Auction (N-BOCA). N-BOCA is a flexible iterative combinatorial auction model that offers optimized trading for multi-suppliers and multi-purchasers in the supply chain. We design the N-BOCA system from the perspectives of architecture, protocol, and trading strategy. Under the given N-BOCA architecture and protocol, auctioneers and bidders have diverse decision strategies f3r winner determination. This needs flexible modeling environments. Hence, we propose an optimization modeling agent for bid and auctioneer selection. The agent has the capability to automatic model formulation for Integer Programming modeling. Finally, we show the viability of N-BOCA through prototype and experiments. The results say both higher allocation efficiency and effectiveness compared with 1-to-N general combinatorial auction mechanisms.

  • Piezoelectric materials can be used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. In this study, we investigated the possibility of harvesting from mechanical vibration force using a high efficient piezoelectric material-polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). A piezoelectric energy harvesting system consists of rectifier, filter capacitor, resistance. The experiments were carried out with impacting force to PVDF film with the thickness of 1 ${\mu}m$. The output power was measured with change in the load resistance value from 100 ${\Omega}$ to 2.2 $M{\Omega}$. The highest power was obtained under optimization by selection of suitable resistive load and capacitance. A power of 0.3082 ${\mu}W/mm^2$ was generated at the external vibration force of 5 N (10 Hz) across a 1 $M{\Omega}$ optimal resistor. Also, the maximum power of 0.345 ${\mu}W/mm^2$ was generated at 22 ${\mu}F$ and 1 $M{\Omega}$. The developed system was expected at a solution to overcome the critical problem of making up small size energy harvester.

  • For the effective disposal of organic food wastes, we seleted 4 strains of microorganism from 186 microbial candidate via enzyme activity test, salt tolerance, food decomposition rate, stability and safety of strains. The identity of these 4 strains are as follows : Fungi is Rhizopus sp., yeasts are Galactomyces sp., Pichia sp. and Hyphopichia sp., In the 50L fermenter scale, we tested various fermenting factor for the optimization of conditions of food waste decomposition using 4 selected strains. The optimum fomenting conditions were as follows : BIO-CHIP Volume 25-30 L, BIO CHIP size 2.0-6.0mm, air flow 200-280L/min, mixing intensity 2-4rpm, temperature $30-45^{\circ}C$. In these fermenting conditions, the efficiency of decomposition(rate of weight loss of food wastes) were 93%. Also the quality of fermenting output were assayed at the basis of fertilizer, and the results were as good as general compost.

  • As the result of reviewing the linked treatment of water quality for treating process at public livestock wastewater treatment facilities for fair selection of the proper linked process in case of linking sewage treatment plant for livestock wastewater, in case of wastewater processed by bio-reactor that is only biologically-treated, the load factor showed relatively high as 1.67%(base on design quality), 2.59%(base on operation quality) regarding COD and 3.69%(base on design quality), 7.67%(base on operation quality) regarding $COD_{Mn}$ but it is judged that there is nearly no influence on the operation of sewage treatment plan. And, in case of oxidized flotation-treated water & biofiltlation-treated water that are the advanced wastewater treatment, the load factor is approximately 1% and there is concern about the installation of excessive facilities in case of installing the advanced wastewater treatment. So, in case of considering the economic efficiency & stable operation of sewage treatment plant S, it is judged to be desirable to link with wastewater processed by bio-reactor that is biologically-treated.

  • To improve transformation efficiency, the callus of Lilium lancifolium Thunb. were bombarded by particles coated with pIG 121 Hm which include NPT II and GUS genes, and then cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA101 which contain pIG121Hm binary vector, carrying neomycin phosphotransferase (NPT II) and $\beta$-Glucuronidase (GUS) genes. Three days after cocultivation with Agrobacterium tumefaciens and particle bombardment, the callus clusters were transferred to MS medium containing 1mg/L 2,4-D, 0.1mg/L BAP, 100mg/L kanamycin and 200mg/L carbenicillin. Four weeks after transfer to the selection medium, GUS expression was detected and PCR analysis revealed the presence of NPT II fragment of the expected size (700 bp) in the transformed callus. The GUS expression from Agrobacterium-mediated transformants after particle bombardment increased to over 3-folds compared with that of callus cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens without particle bombardment. The callus clusters containing kanamycin resistant gene were transferred to MS medium containing 1mg/L NAA and 1mg/L BAP. Somatic embryos were developed in four weeks and microbulbs expressing GUS were formed.

  • For successful soil flushing process selection of appropriate flushing reagents is essential. Futhermore, obtaining operating parameters for site remediation application through various bench-scale tests is also important. In this research a series of organic acids (acetic, citric, oxalic, and succinic acids) were tested for flushing capability. Copper-contaminated natural soil was used as a test medium, and flushing experiments were performed with batch system. All the organic acids used did not provide effective flushing conditions at concentration of 1 mM. At the acid concentration of 50 and 100 mM copper was removed efficiently although 50 and 100 mM did not show any significant differences in removal efficiencies. Citric acid and oxalic acid removed copper more efficiently than the others, and especially, citric acid showed over 87% of removal efficiency of copper at near neutral pH of 5 to 7. Speciation of extracted copper using GEOCHEM simulation showed majority of extracted copper existed as complexed with organic acids and only small portion of organic acids were complexed with copper indicating promising application of soil flushing with organic acid to heavy metal-contaminated site remediation.
