Seismic design code has been performed since 1988 in Korea, so it has not been applied to low-rise reinforced concrete buildings which had been built before 1988. Those building have been designed only for gravity loads based on non-seismic code, Therefore, even minor earthquake occurred, those buildings might have serious damages. In this paper, to investigate the behavior of low-rise reinforced concrete moment resisting frame which had been built in according to the building code of Korea that had been published before 1988, two type of 1/2 scaled exterior beam-column subassemblies which have non-seismic detailing based on the building code of Korea were constructed and tested with reversed cycling loading under the displacement control method. The special features of joint with non-seismic detailing is that there is no transverse reinforcement in the joint. In tests, cracks pattern, strength degradation, loss of stiffness, energy dissipation and the slippage of beam and column bars were investigated. Cracks did not occurred in the joint even seismic loading of 0.12g which is considered as peak ground acceleration in Korea was applied. And increasing seismic loading above 0.12g shear crack happened in the joint which have not transverse beam.

This study examines the seismic failure of RC low-rise building structures having irregularities at the ground story during the 15 November 2017 Pohang, Korea, earthquake, $M_w=5.4$, which is the second strongest since the government began monitoring them in 1978 in South Korea. Some 2,000 private houses were damaged or destroyed in this earthquake. Particularly, serious damage to the piloti story of RC low-rise residential building structures of fewer than five stories was observed within 3 km of the epicenter with brittle shear failure of columns and walls due to severe torsional behavior. Buildings below six stories constructed before 2005 did not have to comply with seismic design requirements, so confinement detailing of columns and walls also led to inadequate performance. However, some buildings constructed after 2005 were damaged at the flexible side of the piloti story due to the high torsional irregularity. Based on these results, this study focuses on the problems of the seismic torsion design approach in current building codes.
Seismic upgrading of existing structures is a technical and social issue aimed at risk reduction. Sustainable design is one of the most important challenges in any structural project. Nowadays, many retrofit strategies are feasible and several traditional and innovative options are available to engineers. Basically, the design strategy can lead to increase structural ductility, strength, or both of them, but also stiffness regulation and supplemental damping are possible strategies to reduce seismic vulnerability. Each design solution has different technical and economical performances. In this paper, four different design solutions are presented for the retrofit of an existing RC frame with poor concrete quality and inadequate reinforcement detailing. The considered solutions are based on FRP wrapping of the existing structural elements or alternatively on new RC shear walls introduction. This paper shows the comparison among the considered design strategies in order to select the suitable solution, which reaches the compromise between the obtained safety level and costs during the life-cycle of the building. Each solution is worked out by considering three different levels of seismic demand. The structural capacity of the considered retrofit solutions is assessed with nonlinear static analysis and the seismic performance is evaluated with the capacity spectrum method.
A nonlinear finite element analysis using ANSYS is used to evaluate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints. The behavior of the finite element models under cyclic loading is compared with the experimental results. Two beam-column joint specimens (SH and SHD) with square hoop confinement in joint and throughout the column with detailing as per IS 13920 are studied. The specimen SHD was provided with additional diagonal bars from column to beam to relocate the plastic hinge formation from beam-column interface. The load-displacement relationship, joint shear stress and strain in beam obtained from numerical study showed good agreement with the experimental results. This investigation proves that seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete beam-column joints under reversed cyclic loading can be evaluated successfully using finite element modeling and analysis.

The objectives of this study were to provide experimental data on the behavior of interlocking spiral columns under cyclic loading, to compare the performance of columns with interlocking spirals to columns with U-type hoops with hook, to study the flexural detailing of interlocking spirals and other transverse steel configurations as the transverse reinforcement The oblong columns with interlocking spirals and with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. The oblong columns with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties showed better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. And this research were to make recommendations for the design of bridge columns incorporating interlocking spirals and U-type hoops with hook as the transverse reinforcement.
The efficacy of a galvanized steel wire mesh (GSWM) as an alternative material for the rehabilitation of RC beam-column connections damaged due to reversed cyclic loading was investigated. The repair mainly uses epoxy resin infused under pressure into the damaged zone and then confined using three types of locally available GSWM mesh. The mesh types used herein are (a) Weave type square mesh with 2mm grid opening (GWSM-1) (b) Twisted wire mesh with hexagonal opening of 15 mm (GSWM-2) and (c) welded wire mesh with square opening of 25 mm (GSWM-3). A reduced scale RC beam-column connection detailed as per ductile detailing codes of Indian Standard was considered for the experimental investigation. The rehabilitated specimens were also subjected to similar cyclic displacement. Important parameters related to seismic capacity such as strength, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation, and ductility were evaluated. The rehabilitated connections exhibited equal or better performance and hence the adopted rehabilitation strategies could be considered as satisfactory. Confinement of damaged region using GSWM-1 significantly enhanced the seismic capacity of the connections.
A reinforced concrete (RC) framed structure detailed according to non-seismic detailing provisions as per Indian Standard was tested on shake table under dynamic loads. The structure had 3 main storeys and an additional storey to simulate the footing to plinth level. In plan the structure was symmetric with 2 bays in each direction. In order to optimize the information obtained from the tests, tests were planned in three different stages. In the first stage, tests were done with masonry infill panels in one direction to obtain information on the stiffness increase due to addition of infill panels. In second stage, the infills were removed and tests were conducted on the structure without and with tuned liquid dampers (TLD) on the roof of the structure to investigate the effect of TLD on seismic response of the structure. In the third stage, tests were conducted on bare frame structure under biaxial time histories with gradually increasing peak ground acceleration (PGA) till failure. The simulated earthquakes represented low, moderate and severe seismic ground motions. The effects of masonry infill panels on dynamic characteristics of the structure, effectiveness of TLD in reducing the seismic response of structure and the failure patterns of non-seismically detailed structures, are clearly brought out. Details of design and similitude are also discussed.

Seismic regulations have been updated from time to time to accommodate an increase in seismic hazards. Comparison of seismic fragility of the existing bridges in Indonesia from different historical periods since the era before 1990 will be the basis for seismic assessment of the bridge stock in Indonesia, most of which are located in earthquake-prone areas, especially those built many years ago with outdated regulations. In this study, seismic fragility curves were developed using incremental non-linear time history analysis and more holistically according to the actual strength of concrete and steel material in Indonesia to determine the uncertainty factor of structural capacity, βc. From the research that has been carried out, based on the current seismic load in SNI 2833:2016/Seismic Map 2017 (7% probability of exceedance in 75 years), the performance level of the bridge in the era before SNI 2833:2016 was Operational-Life Safety whereas the performance level of the bridge designed with SNI 2833:2016 was Elastic - Operational. The potential for more severe damage occurs in greater earthquake intensity. Collapse condition occurs at As = FPGA x PGA value of bridge Era I = 0.93 g; Era II = 1.03 g; Era III = 1.22 g; Era IV = 1.54 g. Furthermore, the fragility analysis was also developed with geometric variations in the same bridge class to see the effect of these variations on the fragility, which is the basis for making bridge risk maps in Indonesia.

Scale model tests were performed to investigate the seismic behavior of the solid and hollow rectangular RC piers with 50% of lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge regions. Continuous bars and lap-spliced ones with a lap length of 39 times the bar diameter were arranged alternately in the sections. In order to clarify the influence of lap splice on a ductility the effect of axial force and lateral confinement were excluded in the test. The typical flexural failure conducting a ductile behavior were observed in both models. It is confirmed that the 50% of lap-spliced bars can be considered as an alternative of seismic detailing for longitudinal bars.
The behavior of beam-column joints in moment resisting frame structures is susceptible to damage caused by seismic effects due to poor performance of the joints. A good number of researches were carried out to understand the complex mechanism of RC joints considered in current seismic design codes. The traditional construction detailing of transverse reinforcement has resulted in serious joint failures during earthquakes. This paper introduces a new design philosophy involving the use of additional diagonal bars within the joint particularly suitable for low to medium seismic effects in earthquake zones. In this study, ten full-scale interior beam-column specimens were constructed with various additional reinforcement details and configurations. The results of the experiment showed that adding additional bars is a promising approach in reinforced concrete structures where earthquakes are eminent. In terms of overall cracking observation during the test, the specimens with additional bars (diagonal and straight) compared with the ones without them showed fewer cracks in the column. Furthermore, concrete confinement is certainly an important design measure as recommended by most international codes.
