Automatic segmentation of brain tissues such as WM, GM, and CSF from brain MRI scans is helpful for the diagnosis of many neurological disorders. Accurate segmentation of these brain structures is a very challenging task due to low tissue contrast, bias filed, and partial volume effects. With the aim to improve brain MRI segmentation accuracy, we propose an end-to-end convolutional based U-SegNet architecture designed with multi-scale kernels, which includes cascaded dilated convolutions for the task of brain MRI segmentation. The multi-scale convolution kernels are designed to extract abundant semantic features and capture context information at different scales. Further, the cascaded dilated convolution scheme helps to alleviate the vanishing gradient problem in the proposed model. Experimental outcomes indicate that the proposed architecture is superior to the traditional deep-learning methods such as Segnet, U-net, and U-Segnet and achieves high performance with an average DSC of 93% and 86% of JI value for brain MRI segmentation.

Disease diagnostics based on medical imaging is getting popularity day by day. Presence of the atherosclerosis is one of the causes of narrowing of carotid arteries which may block partially or fully blood flow into the brain. Serious brain strokes may occur due to such types of blockages in blood flow. Early detection of the plaque and taking precautionary steps in this regard may prevent from such type of serious strokes. In this paper, we present an automatic image segmentation technique for carotid artery ultrasound images based on active contour approach. In our experimental study, we assume that ultrasound images are properly aligned before applying automatic image segmentation. We have successfully applied the automatic segmentation of carotid artery ultrasound images using snake based model. Qualitative comparison of the proposed approach has been made with the manual initialization of snakes for carotid artery image segmentation. Our proposed approach successfully segments the carotid artery images in an automated way to help radiologists to detect plaque easily. Obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper presents a novel texture segmentation method using multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks and Markov random fields in multiscale Bayesian framework. Multiscale wavelet coefficients are used as input for the neural networks. The output of the neural network is modeled as a posterior probability. Texture classification at each scale is performed by the posterior probabilities from MLP networks and MAP (maximum a posterior) classification. Then, in order to obtain the more improved segmentation result at the finest scale, our proposed method fuses the multiscale MAP classifications sequentially from coarse to fine scales. This process is done by computing the MAP classification given the classification at one scale and a priori knowledge regarding contextual information which is extracted from the adjacent coarser scale classification. In this fusion process, the MRF (Markov random field) prior distribution and Gibbs sampler are used, where the MRF model serves as the smoothness constraint and the Gibbs sampler acts as the MAP classifier. The proposed segmentation method shows better performance than texture segmentation using the HMT (Hidden Markov trees) model and HMTseg.

As deep learning technology advances and various high-resolution remote sensing images are available, interest in using deep learning technology and remote sensing big data to detect buildings and change in urban areas is increasing significantly. In this paper, for semantic building segmentation of high-resolution remote sensing images, we propose a new building segmentation model, Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM)-DRUNet that uses the DeepResUNet model, which has excellent performance in building segmentation, as the basic structure, improves the residual learning unit and combines a CBAM with the basic structure. In the performance evaluation using WHU dataset and INRIA dataset, the proposed building segmentation model showed excellent performance in terms of F1 score, accuracy and recall compared to ResUNet and DeepResUNet including UNet.

Video object segmentation is one of the core technologies for content-based real-time MPEG-4 encoding system. For real-time requirement, the segmentation algorithm should be fast and accurate but almost all existing algorithms are computationally intensive and not suitable for real-time applications. The MPEG-4 VM(Verification Model) has provided basic algorithms for MPEG-4 encoding but it has many limitations in practical software development, real-time camera input system and compression efficiency. In this paper, we implemented the preprocessing system for real-time camera input and VOP extraction for content-based video coding and also implemented motion detection to achieve the 180 : 1 compression rate for real-time and high compression MPEG-4 encoding.

We present a novel statistically adaptive method using the Minimum Description Length(MDL) principle for unsupervised segmentation of magnetic resonance(MR) images. In the method, Markov random filed(MRF) modeling of tissue region accounts for random noise. Intensity measurements on the local region defined by a window are modeled by a finite Gaussian mixture, which accounts for image inhomogeneities. The segmentation algorithm is based on an iterative conditional modes(ICM) algorithm, approximately finds maximum ${\alpha}$ posteriori(MAP) estimation, and estimates model parameters on the local region. The size of the window for parameter estimation and segmentation is estimated from the image using the MDL principle. In the experiments, the technique well reflected image characteristic of the local region and showed better results than conventional methods in segmentation of MR images with inhomogeneities, especially.

A laser scanner is widely used fur a device fur acquiring point data in reverse engineering. It is more efficient to generate a surface automatically from the line-typed data than scattered data of points clouds. In the case of a compound model, it is hard to represent all the scanned data into one surface maintaining its original line characteristics. In this paper, a method is presented to generate a surface by the segmentation of measured point data. After forming triangular net, the segmentation is done by the user input such as the angle between triangles, the number of facets to be considered as small segment, and the angle for combining small segment. B-spline fitting is implemented to the point data in each segment. The surface generation through segmentation shows a reliable result when it is applied to the models with curvature deviation regions. An useful algorithm for surface reconstruction is developed and verified by applying an practical model and shows a good tools fur reverse engineering in design modification.
Object segmentation is a demanding research area and not a trivial problem of image processing and computer vision. Tremendous segmentation algorithms were addressed on gray-scale (or biomedical) images that rely on numerous image features as well as their strategies. These works in practice cannot apply to natural color images because of their negative effects to color values due to the use of gray-scale gradient information. In this paper, we proposed a new approach for color object segmentation by modifying a geometric active contour model named distance regularized level set evolution (DRLSE). Its speed function will be designed to exploit as much as possible color gradient information of images. Finally, we provide experiments to show performance of our method with respect to its accuracy and time efficiency using various color images.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. In Korea, breast cancer is most common cancer in women followed by thyroid cancer. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of using deep - run model for segmentation of breast masses and to identify the best deep-run model for breast mass segmentation. In this study, data of patients with breast masses were collected at Asan Medical Center. We used 596 images of mammography and 596 images of gold standard. In the area of interest of the medical image, it was cut into a rectangular shape with a margin of about 10% up and down, and then converted into an 8-bit image by adjusting the window width and level. Also, the size of the image was resampled to $150{\times}150$. In Deconvolution net, the average accuracy is 91.78%. In U-net, the average accuracy is 90.09%. Deconvolution net showed slightly better performance than U-net in this study, so it is expected that deconvolution net will be better for breast mass segmentation. However, because of few cases, there are a few images that are not accurately segmented. Therefore, more research is needed with various training data.
In recent years, using Deep Learning methods to apply for medical and biomedical image analysis has seen many advancements. In clinical, using Deep Learning-based approaches for cancer image analysis is one of the key applications for cancer detection and treatment. However, the scarcity and shortage of labeling images make the task of cancer detection and analysis difficult to reach high accuracy. In 2015, the Unet model was introduced and gained much attention from researchers in the field. The success of Unet model is the ability to produce high accuracy with very few input images. Since the development of Unet, there are many variants and modifications of Unet related architecture. This paper proposes a new approach of using Unet++ with pretrained EfficientNet as backbone architecture for breast tumor cell nuclei segmentation and uses the multi-organ transfer learning approach to segment nuclei of breast tumor cells. We attempt to experiment and evaluate the performance of the network on the MonuSeg training dataset and Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) testing dataset, both are Hematoxylin and Eosin (H & E)-stained images. The results have shown that EfficientUnet++ architecture and the multi-organ transfer learning approach had outperformed other techniques and produced notable accuracy for breast tumor cell nuclei segmentation.
