Germination and seedling elongation of maize (Dekalb XL 72B), and soybeans (Williams) were measured at two temperatures (15 and 35$^{\circ}C$), three soil water potentials (-1.50, -0.5, and -0.05 MPa), and four polyethy-lene glycol 8000 (PEG) levels (0, 20, 30, and 50 percent). Twenty conditioned seeds of each cultivar were treated with 0.2% thiram and planted 2 cm deep in sterilized Mexico silt loam soil which was subsequently compacted to a bulk density of 1.20 g/㎤. Seedling moisture content, dry weight, and length were measured for each treatment combination. Osmoconditioning with PEG showed little effect at high temperature or low soil water potential conditions. Soybeans had higher seedling moisture content than corn and both crops in-creased moisture uptake as soil water potential and temperature increased. Seedling length of corn was longer than soybeans at 35$^{\circ}C$ but shorter at 15$^{\circ}C$. Seedling dry weight of corn decreased at 35$^{\circ}C$ and that of soybeans decreased as soil water potential increased.

This study was carried out to establish the informations on the optimum container for production of Larix leptolepsis container seedlings. Height growth of 1-year-old container seedling was highest in 250 mL of container (19.3 cm), and of 2-year-old seedling was in 500 mL (56.9 cm). On the other hand, the highest growth of root-collar diameter was observed in the both 1-year-old and 2-year-old seedlings grown in 500 mL. Dry mass production in both a whole seedling and each organs of 2-year-old seedling was significantly high in the container with larger volume and lower seedling density. According to the analysis using by WinRhizo program, the larger container in volume showed better root morphological traits such as total root length, root projected area, root surface area, root volume and average root diameter. Among the elements for analysis of root morphological traits, the root volume was the highest one affected by container volume. And it was observed that the root volume was 79.5% and 46.8% in 320 mL and 250 mL, respectively, compared to 500 mL.
The forest management paradigm has recently shifted from focusing on commercial production to focusing on ecosystem management. Accordingly, a natural seedling regeneration method that has a naturally high affinity has attracted much attention in recent years. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship among various environmental factors, lower stratum vegetation, and seedling regeneration in Pinus densiflora forests. The survey site comprised 50 sectors divided using the line transect method, and the survey data were divided into those from wet habitat (19 sites) and dry habitat (31 sites), depending on the soil humidity, and were analyzed separately to show the close relationship between soil humidity and natural seedling regeneration. As a result, the dry habitat exhibited high seedling density (157,419 trees/ha), with the main species being Quercus serrata, Zanthoxylum piperitum, Smilax china, and Pueraria lobata, while wet habitat exhibited low seedling density (57,895 trees/ha), with the main species being Stephanandra incisa, Castanea crenata, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Lysimachia barystachys, Aralia elata, and Styrax japonicus. The height and root-collar diameter under wet conditions exhibited faster growth than those under dry conditions. Height growth by the root-collar diameter in dry habitat increased faster than that in wet habitat. It was also confirmed that seedling regeneration in wet habitat exhibited a rapid growth pattern 5 years after germination. These results suggest that the seedlings begin to grow more rapidly after a period of suppression by competition with surrounding plants. Considering an ecosystem or ecological management approach, specific practices, such as bush control and vine clearing in wet habitats, should be more intensively conducted, especially at the beginning of the management operations.
This research was performed to estimate the influence of relative light intensity and planting density on the growth of dry weight of needles and other organs growth in Korean white pine seedlings raised in the transplanting bed. 1. As treated with various light intensities, relationships between needle dry weight and growth of other organs(dry weight of shoot, root and diameter of seedlings) had significantly positive correlations and linear regressions, but regression between needle dry weight and seedling elongation was a second degree polynomial. As treated with various planting densities, the second degree regression curve was found between needle dry weight and shoot dry weight, and seedling elongation, And linear regression between needle dry weight and root dry weight, and seedling dry weight could be estimated, while any regression between needle dry weight and diameter was not recognized. 2. As treated with various light intensities, linear regression between leaf area and shoot dry weight, and seedling dry weight, exponential regression between leaf area and seedling elongation were significantly recognized, while a tendency of logarithmic regression between leaf area and diameter appeared. According to the different density treatment, logarithmic regression between leaf area and shoot dry weight, linear regression between leaf area and root dry weight, and seedling dry weight, but quadric regression between leaf area and seedling elongation and diameter were significantly found.

This study evaluated the effects of the dimensional characteristics of containers on the nitrogen status of Quercus serrata, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, and Zelkova serrata in the container nursery stage. Seedlings were grown using 16 container types [four growing densities (100, 144, 196, and 256 seedlings/m2) × four cavity volumes (220, 300, 380, and 460 cm3/cavity)]. Two-way ANOVA was performed to test the differences in nitrogen concentration and seedling content among container types. Additionally, we performed multiple regression analyses to correlate container dimensions and nitrogen content. Container types had a strong influence on nitrogen concentration and the content of the seedling species, with a significant interaction effect between growing density and cavity volume. Cavity volumes were positively correlated with the nitrogen content of the three seedling species, whereas growing density negatively affected those of F. rhynchophylla. Further, nutrient vector analysis revealed that the seedling nutrient loading capacities of the three species, such as efficiency and accumulation, were altered because of the different fertilization effects by container types. The optimal ranges of container dimension by each tree species, obtained multiple regression analysis with nitrogen content, were found to be approximately 180-210 seedlings/m2 and 410-460 cm3/cavity for Q. serrata, 100-120 seedlings/m2 and 350-420 cm3/cavity for F. rhynchophylla, and 190-220 seedlings/m2 and 380-430 cm3/cavity for Z. serrata. This study suggests that an adequate type of container will improve seedling quality with higher nutrient loading capacity production in nursery stages and increase seedling growth in plantation stages.
One of the most common needle leaf species used in planting in Korea is korean pine (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.), and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) is one of the test species for suitability. The relation of nursery bed density of 2-1 korean pine and 1-1 jack pine was studied at the Kwang Nung Nursery, Central Branch Station of Forest Research Institute, and about 40km north of Seoul. Nursery bed density of 2-1 korean pine, which ranged from 36 to 324 trees per square meters and of 1-1 jack pine, which ranged from 25 to 169 trees per square meters, had a marked effect on caliper, height, dry weight and percent and amount of plantable stock. The soil physical and chemical properties is silt plus clay, 50.55 percent; organic matter, 2.09 percent; total nitrogen, 0.13 percent; available phosphorus, 253.25 ppm; exchangeable potash, 0.46 m.e/100g; and pH, 5.58. As the density of the nursery seedling stand of 2-1 korean pine increases, the average tree height increases (Fig. 1A), but in 1-1 jack pine density do not affect to increase or decrease the average tree height. As the density of nursery bed increases, the average stem caliper (at 2cm above ground line) and dry weight decrease (Fig. 1B), but the decreasing rate is more seriously in 1-1 jack pine than 2-1 korean pine (Fig.5). As increasing the density of nursery bed, the T/R ratio of trees of the test species increase. Also the dry weight of leaf, stem and root parts are decreasing in proportion to the increase of stand density, but the drop rate of jack pine is more rapid than korean pine (table. 1) The patent facts of difference of growth characteristics between 2-1 korean pine and 1-1 jack pine were studied. These facts should be used to select the scale of stand density at the nursery bed or the plantable site. Korean pine is demanded high density, on the other hand in jack pine low density are more suitable to manage the stand density. Stands of comparatively low density had the greatest percentage of high-quality stock, and the stands of high density had less than the high quality trees of low density. An important criterion of the best density is percent and number of high-quality trees produced per square meter of bed area. Stem caliper and stem height of seedling is used in most public nurseries to sort seedling into plantable grades. The stock grade standard has set at 4.5mm caliper and 16cm height of 2-1 korean pine as the minimum desired stem caliper and height. By the result studies, the plantable stock grade standards of 2-1 korean pine used at stem height 16cm and stem caliper 4.5mm from public nurseries should be reformed to stem height 18cm and stem caliper 4.0mm by the growth characteristics and the tree distribution of stem height and caliper of relation to density. For the 2-1 korean pine, best density should be about 160 to 200 trees per square meter according to soil fertility. For the 1-1 jack pine, the suitable standard of plantable stock should be at stem height 25cm and caliper 6mm (at 2cm above ground line) and best density was about 100 to 120 trees.
This experiment was carried out to estimate the appropriate seedling stand and to find out the factors of good establishment and the reason of the reduction of yield by water foxtail. The seedling stands was improved by the ice straw mulching and treading by the tracks of combine. The effect of mulching was higher than the treading. The appropriate seedling stands for example yield were estimated about 507 plants per $m^2$ and its yield was 24kg/10a. The higher density of water foxtail, the less the grain yield; 21.8% by 17 to 22 water foxtail stands per $m^2$ and 11.0% by 6 to 11 plants.

For the mass production of plug seedlings in cultivar ‘Dejima’ potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) the optimal apical cutting diameter for rooting and rapid multiplication of stem cuttings in hydroponics were determined. In addition, the best planting date was predicted to increase tuber yield of plug seedlings at fall cropping in Cheju-Do, Korea. Days to initial rooting decreased as the cutting diameter was reduced. Plant height, leaf number, root length and root weight per plant were favorable as the cutting diameter was small. The ideal cutting diameter was 1-2 mm in this experiment. In the hydroponic cultures, the Japanese standard (JS) nutrient solution was the most effective for multiplication of stem cuttings. It was able to propagate more than 20 times a month from a single mother plant. Viability of plants, which were derived from plug seedlings using stem cuttings, was excellent when transplanted to the field. The number of tubers and tuber yield in both of the plug seedlings and seed potato planting plots were high when planted on 25 August. The number and yield were reduced when planted on 15 August, 5 September and 15 September. The degree of decrease of tuber yield in the plug seedling planting plot however, was lower than that of seed potatoes when the planting date was late. In the case of small tubers (under 30 g), the number of tubers and tuber yield were evidently increased in the seed potato tuber planting plot; the yield of large tuber (over 80g) in the plug seedling planting plot was higher than that of the seed potato. The total tuber yield per plant in the plug seedling planting plot was less than that of the seed potato; therefore, in order to increase tuber yield it was necessary to increase field plant density.
The study of this experiment is focused on labor saving of healthy rice seedling production using PSF (polypropylene spunbonded fabrics) as thermal protection material. Several factors such as different compositions of nursery soil and PSF materials were tested to produce healthy rice seedlings. The inner thermal protection material in PE film (polyethylene film) showed $0.9-1.7^{\circ}C$ higher than that of PSF 40-100 $\textrm{gm}^{-2}$. The light transmittance-ratio also showed similar trends. It is considered that the appropriate PSF material density was 40 gm$\textrm{gm}^{-2}$ in accordance with economic values and healthy rice seedlings. Plant height and dry weight according to various nursery soil showed the rang-es of 8.5-14.2cm and 5.5-10.0mg, respectively. In composition of nursery soil, artificial soil combined with paddy soil was effective in producing healthy seedling for rice seedling production. The total sugar content also showed the difference between PSF 40, 60 $\textrm{gm}^{-2}$ PE film (0.43-0.52mg FW $\textrm{g}^{-1}$) and PSF 80, 100 $\textrm{gm}^{-2}$ (0.28-0.35mg FW $\textrm{g}^{-1}$) and it showed the same tendency among varieties as well as various nursery soil. These results demonstrate that PSF 40 $\textrm{gm}^{-2}$ economically affordable, and can be recommended as thermal protection material for producing good healthy rice seedling.
In order to obtain a standard reference for designing an adequate power rice transplanter, the cutting forces depending upon variety of seedling, sowing density, seedling age and soil moisture content of mat-type seedling were measured by the rice transplanter installed with force measuring device of dynamic strain gage system in the laboratory. The result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Cutting velocity and acceleration transplanting hoe obtained from jinematic analysis of planting mechanism was 1.32m/sec and 81.5m/$sec^2$ when planting crank-shaft rpm was 160. 2. Little difference between cutting forces on 30-days old seelings of japonica and Indica type was observed, as the cutting forces determined were 2.0kg per hill for Japonica type and 2.1kg per hill for Indica type. 3. Cutting forces determined on 40-days old seedlings were 2.5kg, 2.3kg, 3.1kg and 2.9kg per hill for Milyang No.15, Tongil, Akibare and Milyang No.23 compared to the other varieties. 4. The cutting force was not greatly affected by the sowing densities , only five percent of differences were observed epending upon the sowing densities. 5. Cutting forces were 2.7kg and 2.0kg per hill on 40-days old seedlings and 30-days old seedlings respectively. About 38 percent of more forces was required in cutting 40-days old seedling than in cutting 30-days old seedlings. 6. More cutting forces were required as soil moisture content of mat-type seedling was decreased. 7. Root length after cutting by the planting hoe and their relationships with soil moisture content on 30-days old seedlings, are as follows ; $y=4.147-11.384x+ 28.854x^2$ where , $y$=root length after cutting. (cm) , $x$=soil ture content of mat type seedlings.(%, d.b.) 8. Cutting forces were varied with the width of cuttings ; those on 40-days old mat type seedlings were 2.7kg and 2.2kg per hill when cutting with 14 mm and 10mm of width respectively, about 32 percent of more forces was required when cuting with 14mm of width compared to 10mm of width.
