Life form of the Plants and Vegetation in the Habitat of Endangered Parnassius bremeri in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북의성 멸종위기종 붉은점모시나비 서식지 식물의 생활형 및 식생)

  • The present paper deals with a research of life form and vegetation of the plants extant in the habitat of endangered Parnassius bremeri in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do with a view to restore their habitat and create substitute habitats. The research found that there are a total of 130 vascular plants including 47 families, 96 genera, 113 species, 1 subspecies and 16 varieties. In terms of their life form, hemicryptophytes (H) is the majority of dormancy form with 41 species or 31.54%, while $R_5$ is majority of radicoid form with 72 species or 55.38%, gravitational disseminule form ($D_4$) is majority among the disseminule forms with 68 species or 52.31% and erect type (e) is majority of growth form with 57 species or 43.85%. Major constituents of the habitat are Sedum kamtschaticum, Selaginella tamariscina, Orostachys japonica, Arundinella hirta, Cymbopogon tortilis var. goeringii, Themeda triandra var. japonica, Carex humilis, Indigofera kirilowii, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Festuca ovina, Artemisia capillaris, etc., all of species which are in the initial stage of succession and show simultaneously features characteristic of vegetation on the rock. In the habitat 1. Sedum kamtschaticum- Selaginella tamariscina community and Pinus densiflora community are distributed whereas, in the habitat 2. Sedum kamtschaticum-Selaginella tamariscina community, Sedum kamtschaticum-Carex humilis community, Sedum kamtschaticum-Cymbopogon tortilis var. goeringii community and Sedum kamtschaticum-Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii community are growing and in the habitat 3. Sedum kamtschaticum-Selaginella tamariscina community, Selaginella tamariscina community, Sedum kamtschaticum-Indigofera kirilowii community and Quercus acutissima community are seen distributed there, too. Typical of food plants growing in the habitat is Sedum kamtschaticum, found mostly in the rocky area and its surroundings. Absorption plants are those that usually bloom in the season when imagoes emerge. From the research, it becomes evident that the blooming season of Sedum kamtschaticum, obviously a food plant, corresponds exactly to the emergence timing of imagoes. Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense, Rosa multiflora, Erigeron annuus, Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora are found to belong to these plants.

Pharmacognostical Studies on the Korean Folk Medicine 'Ki Rin Cho' (민간약 기린초의 생약학적 연구)

  • Korean folk medicine 'Ki Rin Cho' has been used to cure stanching and counteracting poison. The botanical origin of the crude drug has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Ki Rin Cho', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of Sedum species growing in Korea, i.e. S. aizoon, S. kamtschaticum and S. latiovalifolium were studied. As a result, 'Ki Rin Cho' was proved to be Sedum kamtschaticum and Sedum aizoon.

Effects of Soil Reaction (pH) of Culture Soil on the Growth of Sedum kamtschaticum in Pot Cultivation (토양반응(pH)이 분화재배 기린초의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to find out proper culture soil for the flowerpot cultivation of Sedum kamtschaticum. Peatmoss was used for the culture soil. pH of the culture soils were adjusted to 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 using calcium hydroxide. Young plants of Sedum kamtschaticum were planted in the pots of 10cm in diameter. The experiment was conducted by the completely randomized design with 3 replications. Growth characteristics were investigated at intervals of 30 days after planting. As the pH of culture soil is lower, growth of Sedum kamtschaticum showed longer plant height and more number of leaves and branches. pH 4.5 to 5.0 appeared to be optimum range as soil reaction of Sedum kamtschaticum cultivation.

  • Rooftop greening is the alternative of urban heat island. The purpose of this study is selecting Sedum to the effect of temperature reduction of the rooftop greening. Since the state of growth is excellent, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum surveyed as coverage. It was investigated that there is the effect of reducing the temperature. The effect of temperature reduction of Sedum counted compound was found to be associated with state of growth. When you construct a rooftop greening, planting Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum is helpful to the effect of temperature reduction. Also, the ingredients various types of Sedum in order to reduce the effective temperature, it must be densified. It must demonstrate an additional effect of temperature reduction of Sedum through complementary and continuous monitoring of the future temperature monitoring method.

Skin Whitening Effect of Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch. Solvent Fractions (기린초(Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch.) 추출 분획물의 피부 미백효과 연구)

  • Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch., a native plant of Korea, has been used in Korean traditional medicine in the form of water extract for its capacity to improve blood circulation and for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Since previous research suggests that S. kamtschaticum Fisch. has excellent antioxidant and mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activities, in this study, the root and stem parts of S. kamtschaticum Fisch. are extracted in 70% ethanol (SKS, SKR), fractionated with and in order of n-hexane (SSH), ethyl acetate (SSE, SRE), chloroform (SSC, SRC) and water (SSW, SRW) according to the polarity of each solvent, and tested for its applicability as a cosmetic material. According to the total polyphenol, flavonoid contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity of each fraction, the contents and scavenging activity of the root extractions (SKR) were higher than those of the stem extractions (SKS), ethyl acetate fractions (SSE, SRE) being the most effective. In addition, ethyl acetate fractions had the highest tyrosinase inhibition activity and melanin synthesis inhibition activity used on B16F10 melanoma cells, at the concentration of 10 ㎍/mL. HPLC analysis detected a variety of polyphenols including gallic acid and quercetin. This study suggests the potential role of S. kamtschaticum Fisch. as a natural cosmeceutical material.

Effect of Different Irrigation Period on the Growth of Greenary Sedum Mat (삽목을 이용한 녹화용 Sedum 매트의 관수 간격에 따른 생육 특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate growth characteristics of irrigation period of greenary mats focused on management as a material to apply on rooftop. Using Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense, Sedum reflexum, Sedum album and Sedum burrito greenary mats were made. The irrigation periods were every 3 days, 7 days, and 10 days after made each greenary mats.1. All treatments on survival ratio of 5 Sedum species were over 96%. Especially, new individuals were emerged from naturally detached leaves. 2. Growth of S. kamtschaticum, S. takesimense, S. reflexum were good on 7 day irrigation treatment. 3. The highest covering ratio of S. burrito was 3 day irrigation treatment, and the hightest of the others were 7 day irrigation treatment. Considerations for species selection, mixture, ratio and management were obtained from this study.

Monitoring on the Soils and Plant Growth in Modular Sloped Rooftop Greening System (모듈형 경사지붕 녹화시스템의 토양과 식물생육 모니터링)

  • The major objective of this study was to quantify the effects of substrate depth and substrate composition on the development of sedum etc., in a sloped rooftop (6 : 12 pitch) environment during a 4-year period. The experiment was conducted from 2006 October to 2010 December under several conditions without soil erosion control : two substrate depth (5cm, 10cm), four substrate composition (A5N3C2, A3N3C4, A6C4, G5L3C2: A: artificial lightweight soil, N : natural soil, G : granite decomposed soil, C : leave composite, L : loess), four sloped roof direction ($E40^{\circ}W$, $W40^{\circ}N$, $S40^{\circ}W$, $N40^{\circ}E$). In this experiment 4 sedum etc., were used: Sedum sarmentosum, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum rupestre, Sedum telephium, flowering herbs (mixed seed : Taraxacum platycarpum, Lotus corniculatus, Aster yomena, Aster koraiensis), western grasses (mixed seed : Tall fescue, Creeping redfescue, Bermuda grass, Perennial ryegrass). The establishment factor had two levels : succulent shoot establishment (sedum), seeding (flowering herbs, western grasses). 1. Enkamat, as it bring about top soil exfoliation, was unsuitable material for soil erosion control. 2. Sedum species exhibited greater growth at a substrate depth of 10cm relative to 5cm. All flowering herbs and western grasses established only at a substrate depth of 5cm were died. A substrate depth of 5cm was not suited in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance. If additional soil erosion control will be supplemented, a substrate depth of 10cm in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance was considered suitable. 3. For all substrate depth and composition, the most abundant species was Sedum kamtschaticum. The percentage of surviving Sedum kamtschaticum was 73.4% at a substrate depth of 10cm in autumn 2007 one year after the roof vegetation had been established. But the percentage of surviving other sedum were 33.3%~51.9%, therefor mulching for soil erosion control was essential after rooftop establishment in extensive sloped roof greening was proved. To raise the ratio of plant survival, complete establishment of plant root at substrate was considered essential before rooftop establishment. 4. There was a significant interaction between biomass and substrate moisture content. There were also a significant difference of substrate moisture and erosion among substrate composition. The moisture content of A6C4 was highest, the resistance to erosion of A5N3C2 was highest among substrate composition. The biomass of plants were not significantly higher in A5N3C2 and A6C4 relative to A3N3C4 and G5L3C2, For substrate moisture and erosion resistance, A5N3C2 and A6C4 were considered suitable in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance. 5. There were significant difference among roof slope direction on the substrate moisture. Especially, the substrate moisture content of $S40^{\circ}W$ was lower relative to that of $N40^{\circ}E$, that guessed by solar radiation and erosion.

Optimum Media of Sedum kamtschaticum for Pot Culture in an Ebb & Flow System (Ebb & Flow 시스템에서 기린초 분화재배에 적합한 배지 선발)

  • Sedum kamtschaticum has been used as one of the native valuable plants for ornamental purpose. This experiment was conducted to find out the optimum media for pot cultured Sedum kamtschaticum using peatmoss and coir-based mixtures. Four mixtures such as peatmoss:perlite(5:5, v/v), peatmoss:perlite(7:3, v/v), coir:perlite(5:5, v/v), and coir:perlite(7:3, v/v) were used. Plants were irrigated with a Sonneveld solution in an ebb & flow system. The content of T-N, K, and Ca in the peatmoss-based media was higher than those of the coir-based media. The concentration of T-N, K, and Ca in the shoots of Sedum kamtschaticum increased when plants were cultured with peatmoss-based media. In the peatmoss-based media, plant growth, such as number of branches, leaf length and shoot fresh and dry weights, were significantly increased than those of plant grown in the coir-based media. As the results, the optimum media for pot cultured Sedum kamtschaticum in an ebb & flow system was considered to be the peatmoss-based mixtures.

A test of the hybrid origin of Korean endemic Sedum latiovalifolium (Crassulaceae) (한국특산 태백기린초(돌나물과)의 교잡 기원에 대한 검증)

  • Eighteen morphological characters from 40 populations and ten isozyme loci from 35 populations of Sedum latiovalifolium and related species were examined to investigate the degree of morphological and genetic variation. The high-frequency marker alleles $MDH-2^a$ and $PGI-1^a$ in S. aizoon, S. kamtschaticum, and S. zokuriense did not appear in the populations of S. latiovalifolium. In addition, the high-frequency allele ($MDH-2^c$) in S. latiovalifolium appeared at a very low frequency in other subg. aizoon species. Thus, the isozyme data did not support a hybrid origin of S. latiovalifolium from S. aizoon with S. kamtschaticum. The results of an unweighted pair-group method using the arithmetic average method and a principal components analysis using morphological data also did not support a hybrid origin of S. latiovalifolium. However, our data strongly suggest that some individuals from the populations found in the Gumdaebong area were most likely hybrids due to introgression between S. latiovalifolium and S. kamtschaticum or S. aizoon and S. kamtschaticum.
