Depositional Environments and Sequence Stratigraphy of estuary of the Nakdong River (낙동강 하구 점성토 지층의 층서와 퇴적환경)

  • Sedimentological, geochemical, geophysical and micropaleontological analyses of 10 borehole cores were carried out to understand depositional environment and sequence stratigraphy of late Quaternary sedimentation in the estuary of the Nakdong River. Holocene Formation in study area is classified into five sedimentary units. Early Holocene freshwater lower pebbly sandy deposit(Unit I), lower muddy deposit(Unit II), middle thin sandy deposit(Unit III), upper muddy deposit(Unit VI), and upper sandy deposit(Unit V), in ascending order contolled by global sea-level change since interglacial period(about 15,000 yrs B.P.). Unit I deposited in erosional environments before marine trangression. Unit II and Unit VI composed of clay were deposited in cold and worm currents for marine trangression., respectively.

A Study on Convergency of Tunnel Displacement using Control Chart Method (관리도 기법을 이용한 터널 변위수렴 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Tunnel deformation happens by excavation. After installation of support, tunnel is gradually stabilized over time. Effect of excavation on tunnel behavior decreases as increase of distance from face. If the time that the displacement converges by tunnel stabilization is estimated, processes after stabilization can be advanced and economic loss can be reduced. In this study, the distance of displacement convergent point from face in the tunnel constructed on sedimentary rock is estimated using control chart method. As the results of analysis using a control of chart, displacements in a sedimentary rock tunnel are converged within 100 m from each tunnel face.

The Origin of Food Sources for Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae by Fatty Acid Analysis (지방산을 이용한 Nuttallia olivacea 및 Nereidae의 먹이원에 관한 연구)

  • The spatial variability in the food chain structure of an estuary environment (Nanakita estuary, Japan) was investigated using fatty acid. Potential organic matter sources (terrestiral plants, macroalgae, benthic microalgae, dinflagellates and bacteria), sedimentary organic matters and benthic invertebrates (Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae) were sampled in four locations with different tidal flat type. The main objective of the present study was to determine the origin of sediment and the food sources of N. olivacea and Nereidae along with small-scale spatial variability. The origin of sedimentary organic matters were mainly the fatty acid of bacteria and benthic microalgae. Especially, The organic matter of terrestrial plant origin was found the highest in station C. The diets of N. olivacea and Nereidae were found to be dominated by diatoms and terrestrial plants. Whereas, macroalgae and dinoflagellates showed little influence to benthic invertebrates. Moreover, according to principal component analysis, it is showed that benthic invertebrates in the same region are using the same food without relation with species. On the other hand, the N. olivacea and Nereidae of station D clearly contrasts with station B in terms of main food sources. From these results, it is suggested that food competition of benthic invertebrates revealed high a connection between small-scale spatial variability and food source in estuary.

  • In september 2004 and 2006, topographical and sedimentological survey were carried out using multibeam echosounder, which were to investigate shape characteristics, temporal changes and control factors of the subaqueous dunes in the southern Gyeonggi Bay. The present tidal current and sedimentary characteristics of study area make conditions that the sizes (length and height) of large subaqueous dunes are developed and maintained sufficiently. The change of sedimentary characteristics over time, the decrease in grain size causes reduction in the height of very large subaqueous dunes. Therefore it shows that the grain size of surface sediments is a primary control factor in defining subaqueous dune sizes in the study area.

  • As an indirect method, Schmidt hammer test has been employed to investigate correlation between uniaxial compressive strengths and blow values. To conduct the experiment, researchers have examined 11 types (1,417 blocks) of rock, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea. Every kind of rocks shows different blow behaviors in which correlations of rocks have been analyzed, thus leading to results in new formulas for strength predictions. Cross-check for reliability demonstrates high confidence. Newly proposed test method is highly valued for future research on Korean rocks.

  • This paper deals with Poisson's ratio and volumetric strain behavior on loading-reloading terms under uniaxial condition targeting 404 individual rocks, which include sedimentary rocks as sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerate and tuff on Kyungsang basin. Poisson' ratio demonstrates increase, convergence and decrease behavior according to the increase in load, which results in preponderance of increase behavior. Volumetric strain demonstrates normal, positive and negative behavior according to the increase in load, which results in preponderance of normal behavior. On practice, Poisson's ratio can be indicative of high or low values with low values of design load. Consequently, a careful selection of results in in-situ sample experiment should be made and varying design conditions should be considered.

  • Schmidt hammer test as an indirect method has so far been widely applied for determining the physical properties of intact rock, and many researchers have developed procedures for its use on rock cores, blocks and in field. Though many methods have developed upto date for indirect using, the almost were single blow which has many errors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the established as for ASTM, ISRM, BSI, Poole & Farmer and Hucka method and to suggest a new optimum test method and statistical analysis on rocks. The finding has indicated that succeeding blow has served as an optimal to predict physical properties of rocks. To conduct the experiment, researchers have examined 150 rock blocks, which include igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in Korea nation wide.

  • The Gwangyang Bay, southern coast of Korea, is characterized by its semi-enclosed basin morphology and mesotidal regime. The Seomjin River, in particular, has a complex delta depositional system at its mouth, which has approximately 44$\textrm{km}^2$ in the total surface area. Various sedimentary environments, such as delta, intertidal flat, subtidal zone and major tidal channels are recognized based on sediment facies and depositional regime. However, the essential intertidal flat environments are developed mainly in the western parts of the bay which is generally low in energy, i, e. tidal current and wave action.

  • Elastic moduli and behavioral characteristics changes of very widely according to stress level resulting from uniaxial compressive test of sedimentary rock. This means that elastic moduli do not indicate constants but variables. More appropriate and reasonable outcome will be accepted through loading-reloading test in design and construction progress. An attention for behavioral characteristics of elastic moduli shown in low level of stress should be paid.

Chemical Properties of Sediment in Nanakita Estuarine Tidal Flat: Estimation of Sedimentary Organic Matter Origin by Stable Isotope and Fatty Acid

  • The spatial variation of organic matter sources in tidal flat sediment of the Nanakita River estuary, involving Gamo lagoon on the north-east coast of Honshu Island, Japan, was examined using carbon stable isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. The spatial variation of total organic carbon (TOC) contents and ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were highly variable in between the stations, such as sandy flat (1.3 mg/g, -21.0‰), sand-muddy flat (2.6 mg/g, -21.9‰), and muddy flat (24.9 mg/g, -25.9‰), respectively. Particularly, at the muddy flat, high TOC content and low ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of the sediments indicated that the surface sediment was composed largely of terrestrial organic matter. Whereas, at the sandy flat and sand-muddy flat, the high ratios of diatom and bacteria biomarkers indicated the high contribution of abundant microorganism along with marine organic matter in sediment composition. From these results, it considered that the amount and origin of transported sedimentary organic matter indicated different characteristics in this study stations.
