  • An experimental study is described in which a 305-mm-diameter instrumented drilled shaft was installed in a moderately expansive clay soil during the dry season and monitored over a period of about 18 months. The purpose of the study was In investigate the effects of seasonal moisture changes in the soil on the shear stresses imposed on the sides of the drilled shaft and movements of the shaft head. The soil in the vicinity of the test shaft was instrumented to measure suction and ground surface movement and the relation between suction, total stress and shear strength of the soil at the test site was determined through laboratory triaxial compression testing. Daily rainfall and temperatures were also monitored at the test site, the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site at the University of Houston, where control on surface grading and vegetation existed. Over the course of the study induced unit side shear values of up to 54 kPa were measured in the test shaft. A simple computational model was developed that related observed suction changes to unit side shear induced by the expansion of the soil through the use of the laboratory suction-total stress-shear strength relation.

  • Generation and physico-chemical characteristics of municipal solid wastes are very important for sanitary management. However, that has not been investigated so far especially in chunchon. And so, we tried to examine many things in detail. It was resulted that density was $90{\sim}94kg/m^3$ in school and office zone and $290{\sim}298kg/m^3$ in apartment and market place. The compositional weight fraction was food, 40~54%, paper, 14~18%, vinyl and prastic, 14~20% in house zone and market place and paper, 42~70% in school and office zone. Moisture was estimated to be 54~57% in independent house zone, apartment and market place and 11~23% in school and office zone. And three composition was water content, 44.1%, incineration particle, 11.2%, volatile parts, 44.7% in respectively. That is because of seasonal effects and regional chracteristics. In the results of chemical composition and caloric value analysis, carbon(C) was 80% in vinyl and plastic and oxygen(O) was 54.4% in paper.

  • Background: Plants over-expressing Arabidopsis ABF3 (abscisic acid-responsive element-binding factor 3) have enhanced tolerance to various environmental stresses, especially drought. Using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis, we compared the rhizosphere-associated structures of microbial communities for transgenic potato containing this gene and conventional "Jopoong" plants. Results: During a 2-year field experiment, fungal richness, evenness, and diversity varied by year, increasing in 2010 when a moderate water deficit occurred. By contrast, the bacterial richness decreased in 2010 while evenness and diversity were similar in both years. No significant difference was observed in any indices for either sampling time or plant line. Although the composition of the microbial communities (defined as T-RF profiles) changed according to year and sampling time, differences were not significant between the transgenic and control plants. Conclusions: The results in this study suggest that the insertion of ABF3 into potato has no detectable (by current T-RFLP technique) effects on rhizosphere communities, and that any possible influences, if any, can be masked by seasonal or yearly variations.

  • It is observed that the cooling capacity of impinging water jet is affected by the seasonal conditions in steel manufacturing process with large scale. To confirm this phenomena, the cooling experiments of a hot steel plate by a laminar jet were conducted for two different initial ambient air temperature($10^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$) in a closed chamber, and an inverse heat conduction method is applied for the quantitative comparison. It is found that the cooling capacity under $10^{\circ}C$ air temperature is lower than that under $40^{\circ}C$, as is the saturated water vapor is more easily observed, and the amount of total extracted heat in the case of $10^{\circ}C$ is smaller by nearly 15% than that of $40^{\circ}C$ case. From these results, it is thought that the quantity of water vapor, which could be absorbed until saturation, effects on the mechanism of boiling heat transfer.

  • Forages were sampled from an orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow during two years in order to know both the characteristics of spring grass, which differ from those on other seasons, and the effects of potassium application on potassium. magnesium and water contents of forages. Their is a seasonal difference in the response of mineral and water contents to potassium. Minera] contents in forage possibly show their extremes in the early spring such as April on the present experiment. Namely, the K content of the forage was the highest, while the Mg content was the lowest in April. Other facts worthy to be described were the highest water content and the sensitive response of it to the K fertilization in spring time.

  • This field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of grazing and cutting management on the forage production and botanical composition at different legumes sown swards of the experimental field of Livestock Experiment Station. in Suweon, from Aug. 1985 to Oct. 1988. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Dry matter yield of cutting management (1213.0 kg/lOa) was higher by 19% than that of grazing management (1016.8 kg/lOa). Yield of pasture mixtures including alfalfa both cutting and grazing were higher than those including ladino clover and red clover. Yield under grazing was inferior to cutting in the first year but superior in the second year. 2. Seasonal dry matter production under grazing showed 5 1% in spring, 33% in summer and 16% in autumn, but under cutting showed 46% in spring, 42% in summer and 12% in autumn. 3. Daily dry matter production per 10a under grazing is decreased 5.9 kg in spring, 5.5 kg in summer and 3.7 kg in autumn. But under cutting is decreased 8.7 kg in summer, 6.6 kg in spring and 3.4 kg in autumn. 4. Botanical compositions of mixtures swards involving ladino clover and red clover were not influenced by method of defoliation. But mixtures swards including alfalfa were highly influenced by method of defoliation. Alfalfa ratio at the time of final utilization under grazing was about 30%, but under cutting was about 70-80%.

  • In this paper, we establish a two-competitive-prey and one-predator Holling type II system by introducing a proportional periodic impulsive harvesting for all species and a constant periodic releasing, or immigrating, for the predator at different fixed time. We show the boundedness of the system and find conditions for the local and global stabilities of two-prey-free periodic solutions by using Floquet theory for the impulsive differential equation, small amplitude perturbation skills and comparison techniques. Also, we prove that the system is permanent under some conditions and give sufficient conditions under which one of the two preys is extinct and the remaining two species are permanent. In addition, we take account of the system with seasonality as a periodic forcing term in the intrinsic growth rate of prey population and then find conditions for the stability of the two-prey-free periodic solutions and for the permanence of this system. We discuss the complex dynamical aspects of these systems via bifurcation diagrams.

  • We have examined seasonal and annual means of clear-sky solar noon and daily erythemal ultraviolet-B irradiances measured in Anmyeon. The intensity of the EUV-B irradiance is mainly dependent on solar zenith angle (SZA) and total ozone amounts on clear day conditions. The daily maximum occurs near solar noon time and the highest monthly accumulated EUV-B is seen in July in Anmyeon. The maximum daily variation occurs in June and July due to precipitation and clouds. The 7-year trend of EUV-B irradiance shows that it is slightly increasing. Additionally, we could confirm that aerosol effects such as Asian Dust decreases the EUV-B irradiance reaching the ground surface by 35% to 60%. For more than 45% of the summer days, EUV-B irradiacne was high enough that the UV index registered higher than category Extremely High. This information will be very important for evaluation of the UV index for prevention of both skin cancer and ecosystem damages as well as to understand UV climatology over the Korean Peninsula.

  • Since cultural eutrophication has the detrimental effects on estuarine and coastal ecosystems, recognition of early stage of nutrient over-enrichment is critical for effective managements of the ecosystems. Since released nutrients into coastal ecosystems are diluted and dissipated through tidal action and rapid uptakes by marine plants, monitoring of in situ nutrient concentrations may not be useful for detecting early eutrophication on coastal and estuarine ecosystems. To develop an effective indicator of cultural eutrophication using marine plants, tissue N content and area normalized leaf mass of eelgrass, Zostera marina were examined in Kosung Bay and Koje Bay on the south coast of Korea from June 2001 to April 2003. Eelgrass tissue N content exhibited obvious seasonal variations. Leaf N content was highest during winter and early spring and lowest during summer. Eelgrass tissue N content was higher at Kosung Bay site, which has higher sediment organic content, than at Koje Bay site. Area normalized leaf mass showed reverse trend of leaf N content, and consequently, eelgrass leaf N content and leaf mass exhibited strong negative correlation at both study sites. The results of the present study suggested that the ratio of eelgrass leaf N content to area normalized leaf mass can be applied to assess environmental nitrogen conditions on the coastal and estuarine ecosystems.

  • In this study the main purpose is to reduce non-point source pollution and improve water quality of Hoeya reservoir using constructed wetlands. As part of the efforts to improve water quality of the reservoir, cattail and reed-wetland cells were constructed in front of the reservoir to remove nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P). Also, effects of hydraulic and seasonal variation on removal efficiencies of N and P were investigated. Total P and N removal efficiencies of the wetland system were approximately 20.7% and 42.7%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of N and P during the growth season (july to august) and blooming season of cattail and reed (september to october) were higher than other seasons. These results suggest that wetland system could be an effective alternative for control of non-point source pollutnat such as N and P of reservoir.
