  • To investigate the variation of marine environments due to set up of artificial structure, we carried out field observations. High temperature and salinity waters near the south frontal area were distributed clearly in the southeastern part of study area during summer season The variation of current structure was also occurred around study area where artificial structure set up. In 2005 after set up of artificial structure, the nutrient concentration increased greater than that in 2002 before set up artificial structures. To illustrate the characteristics of marine environment due to set up of artificial structure, quantitative analyses on the effect of artificial structure are important.

  • This study aims to identify the warm and cold periods(WP, CP) of November appeared in the daily normals of daily minimum temperature of Seoul for 1941~1970 and 1971~2000 and to investigate synoptic characteristics of the temperature changes of WP and CP. The WP temperatures are increased clearly(p value 0.000), the CP temperatures are also warming but not significant statistically. In WP, there are not apparent trends corresponding the warming of WP temperature, in the Siberian High, Sea Level Pressure(SLP), 925hPa surface wind(U925, V925) around the Korean peninsula. In high period(1972~1979) of WP temperature, there are positive SLP anomaly and anomalous anticyclonic circulation pattern of 925hPa wind field over the Korean peninsula then the winter monsoon is weakened and the WP temperature is ascending. In CP, the Siberian high are weakening, the Hokkaido eastern low are strengthening and the westerlies(U925) over the Korean Peninsula are enlarging. So CP temperature are suppressed in rising trend or shows weak descent.

  • Recently, unmanned systems are largely utilized in various fields due to the persistency and the least operational risk and an unmanned surface vehicle(USV) is the one of the representative application in the naval field. To assign multiple roles to an USV, we developed a sonar system which consists of a forward detecting sonar for the long-range detection, a downward detecting sonar for the small target scan and identification, and a strut type body for mounting sonar systems. In this paper, we described the developed sonar system for USV and the sea test results for verifying system performance. The test results showed that the developed sonar system was able to detect the underwater target about several kilometers away and could recognize a small object at the downside of the sonar system. We expect that the developed sonar system will be easily applied to other unmanned platforms without serious consideration.

  • Marine traffic engineering is the technical field that observe flows of vessel traffic in accurate and describe the features of ships' movement statistically or analytically, then contribute to the improvement of the traffic flow and safety of traffic. Recently, marine traffic engineering has been developed until that possible to estimate a changes in traffic flow caused from some transformations of the traffic condition, and to assess the feasibility and validity of the changes by computer simulation. This paper aims to assess the present traffic safety at the sea area adjacent to Pusan harbour, and the validity of the suggested roundabouts traffic separation scheme at the Pusan approaching water(by Park in 1998) using environmental stress aggregation model There are couple of steps to describe the marine traffic situation and to assess it's safety by computer simulation. The first step is observe the movement of vessel traffic concerned waters and to obtain the relevant data for computer simulation. Second step is to carry out computer simulation to assess the simulated traffic flows by using suitable indexes of assessment model - environmental stress aggregation model. Eventually, this paper conclude that the environmental stress aggregation model is a useful technique to assess the traffic safety and the suggested roundabouts traffic separation scheme could make the concerned area safer than present traffic situation.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic research about Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus), and to establish a conservation area into Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park, South Korea. We recorded Siberian roe deer field signs (bedding sites, feeding areas, feces and tracks etc), and habitat variables such as nearest distance to the watercourse, trails, slope, aspect, forest type and land cover etc. from Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2007 in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. According to the research of habitat characteristics of Siberian roe deer inhabited in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park preferred mixed forest consisted of aged forest and middle-aged forest on the gentle slope which was close to hydrosphere in the middle elevation area of altitude of 400~600m above sea level in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. The results indicated that Siberian roe deer appeared to prefer south slope or north slope during the snow season and west or east slope during the non-snow season. The area of most suitable habitat for Siberian roe deer in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park was $128.5km^2$ (32% of the total area) followed by $244.3km^2$ buffer area (62.2% of the total area), and $22.9km^2$ unsuitable habitat area (5.8% of the total area), which means environmentally unsuitable habitat for Siberian roe deer was rare in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park. Thus, the area classified as major area in Seoraksan(Mt.) National Park appeared to be most important for the protection of Siberian roe deer.

  • The changes of sea bottom configuration, which may cause the coastal disasters, have been considered as social problems. It is obvious that the beach deformation is attributable to the sediment transport associated with erosion and siltation in coastal areas such esturies, channel and harbors. The prediction method and countermeasures far them, however, are not on the level of satisfaction, which indicates that make efforts should be made on developing them. Groin was constructed at Hak-Dong gravel beach to embark ship at 1996, as a result region of right of groin, severe erosion of beach is proceeding till now 1999. In this study, based on the field measurements, involved the one-line theory model which was selected for the prediction of shoreline change to prepare coastal protection methods of Hak-Deng gravel beach. Author found that the storaged sediment estimation model by Sonu and Beek(1971) is useful model at the Hak-Dong gravel beach by the use of topographical survey data from September, 1998 to September, 1999.

  • Long period waves were measured at two stations outside and inside Chukpyon Harbor using two pressure-type wave gauges for one week that covers storm sea period. Based on the collected data the characteristics of long-period resonant oscillations were analysed: the resonant period corresponding to the peak spectral density are slightly different from one to the component wave period with the largest amplification ratio, and the latter period is suggested as that of the first resonant mode. From the analysed field data and numerical modeling, the first resonant mode of Chukpyon Harbor region appeared to be around 12 minutes with amplification ratio of 7, whose amplitude varies 10-20 cm inside of the harbour, and also the second mode appeared to be around 6 minutes. The waves of 2-3 minute periods were resonated apparently in the harbour, which is considered to be generated from group-bounded irregular waves and non-linear wave-wave interaction etc. The linearly decreasing reflection coefficients used in the numerical modeling appeared to be an alternative in calculating reflected waves in harbor.

  • Some CMP gathers acquired from shallow marine seismic reflection survey in offshore Korea do not show the hyperbolic trend of moveout. It originated from so-called swell effect of source and streamer, which are towed under rough sea surface during the data acquisition. The observed time deviations of NMO-corrected traces can be entirely ascribed to the swell effect. To correct these time deviations, a residual statics is introduced using Genetic Algorithms (GA) into the swell correction. A new class of global optimization methods known as GA has recently been developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence and has a resemblance with the genetic evolution of biological systems. The basic idea in using GA as an optimization method is to represent a population of possible solutions or models in a chromosome-type encoding and manipulate these encoded models through simulated reproduction, crossover and mutation. GA parameters used in this paper are as follows: population size Q=40, probability of multiple-point crossover P$_c$=0.6, linear relationship of mutation probability P$_m$ from 0.002 to 0.004, and gray code representation are adopted. The number of the model participating in tournament selection (nt) is 3, and the number of expected copies desired for the best population member in the scaling of fitness is 1.5. With above parameters, an optimization run was iterated for 101 generations. The combination of above parameters are found to be optimal for the convergence of the algorithm. The resulting reflection events in every NMO-corrected CMP gather show good alignment and enhanced quality stack section.

  • We developed a CASE-II water model that will enable the simulation of remote sensing reflectance($R_{rs}$) at the coastal waters for the retrieval of suspended sediments (SS) concentrations from satellite imagery. The model has six components which are: water, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter (DOM), non-chlorophyllous particles (NC), heterotrophic microorganisms and an unknown component, possibly represented by bubbles or other particulates unrelated to the five first components. We measured $R_{rs}$, concentration of SS and chlorophyll, and absorption of DOM during our field campaigns in Korea. In addition, we generated $R_{rs}$ from different concentrations of SS and chlorophyll, and various absorptions of DOM by random number functions to create a large database to test the model. We assimilated both the computer generated parameters as well as the in-situ measurements in order to reconstruct the reflectance spectra. We validated the model by comparing model-reconstructed spectra with observed spectra. The estimated $R_{rs}$ spectra were used to (1) evaluate the performance of four wavelengths and wavelengths ratios for accurate retrieval of SS. 2) identify the optimum band for SS retrieval, and 3) assess the influence of the SS on the chlorophyll algorithm. The results indicate that single bands at longer wavelengths in visible better results than commonly used channel ratios. The wavelength of 625nm is suggested as a new and optimal wavelength for SS retrieval. Because this wavelength is not available from SeaWiFS, 555nm is offered as an alternative. The presence of SS in coastal areas can lead to overestimation chlorophyll concentrations greater than 20-500%.
