Research outputs of science and engineering fields including Life Sciences were analyzed using KOSEF's Database. The total number of Life Sciences scientists participating in KOSEF's Database was 7,413(33.1 percent), and during the latest five years(2001 to 2005), the number of articles published in SCI(Scientific Citation Index) journals and Non-SCI journals by them was 47,740(37.7 percent) and 72,115(39.9 percent), respectively. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals during the latest five years was 5.0 in Biology, 4.1 in Agricultural Sciences, and 7.5 in Medical Sciences. The average number of articles per capita published in SCI journals within Life Sciences was 12.1 in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, 10.3 in Allergy and Immunology, 10.0 in Physiology and Pharmacology, 9.7 in Anatomy and Cell Biology, in order. The results of this survey will be used as a reference in comparisons of research output between Life Sciences and other sciences both in quality and quantity.

[ $T_EX$ ] is a typesetting system created by Donald E. Knuth for producing publication-quality scientific books and journals. It is famous for the line breaking algorithm, the formatting of complex mathematical formula, and the powerful macro programming capability. Recently $T_EX$ plays a new role of an automatic typesetting engine. The paper describes $T_EX$ in the framework of typography by comparing with DTP softwares and word processors.

We analyzed the author's productivity and cited literatures to assess research activities of medical scientists and scientific properties of medical research in Korea by bibliometric research methods. We tested applicability of Lotka's law and analyzed the author's productivity by means of Brookes graphic model. And we measured core journals, aging factors and half-life in medical literatures by the Bradford's law and the law of obsolescence.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the present state and evolution of scientific research with regard to the scientific production generated on Facebook. Good analysis proves challenging due to the large number of publications about the topic. That is why we concentrate on Scopus as the information service with the highest coverage on this topic. We performed a bibliometric analysis on Facebook-related research from 2005 to 2016. We identified publication output, subject areas, journals, and countries in order to assess the publication trends and research hotspots in this field. Moreover, an author network graph and a geo map were applied to visualize some research trends. These results provide a basis for better understanding of the development of global Facebook research.

This first part of a series provides some data on the quick growth, high importance and increasing cost of scientific research which leads to a doubling of the amount of research literature in about every eight years. The importance of periodicals is emphasized and some figures on the growth of abstract journals demonstrate how difficult it has become for the scientist to keep up with the current development in his subject field without using documentation. The second part, in KORSTIC's next issue, deals with the scope and methods of scientific documentation, the third part with the devices and machines for information processing and with the problem of automation, whilst the fourth part throws some light on the organization of documentation work all around the world.

A journal listed by the Thompson Reuters for Scientific Citation Index Expended(SCIE) is important to be recognized internationally. There is no domestic journal related the exercise or sports discipline in spite of some domestic journals related other disciplines are recently listed in the SCIE. To be listed our Korean Journal of Exercise Nutrition(KJEN) on the SCIE, it is important to satisfy the criteria of SCIE. The criteria for journal evaluation and selection by Thompson Reuters include four main aspects. Evaluation of basic journal standards include timeliness of publication, international editorial conventions, bibliographic information in English and application of the peer review process. The editorial contents, international diversity and citation analysis are also evaluated. This study will propose the key points for listing the KJEN at SCIE journal.

The importance of data publishing in the open-science era is increasing as it can contribute to other scientific discoveries by accelerating the sharing of research data, improving accessibility and citability, and providing standardized technical documentation for research data. In addition, the need for data papers is emerging as a way for data papers to maintain a status equivalent to research papers, and the publication of data journals is on the rise as a new type of scholarly publishing. In particular, the field of Ecology is a field where large-scale research data are produced and managed, thus the data journal publishing in this field is active worldwide. On the other hand, the research on data journal is in its early stages in Korea, and there is no data journal in the field of Ecology. Thus, this study explores and presents strategies for publishing data journals in the ecological field. First, we investigate the publishing status of domestic and international data journals and the publication status of domestic journals. Then, we conducted a focused group interview with experts of scholarly publishing, open access policy and journal publishing in the field of Ecology. Finally, based on the survey and the expert FGI's results, strategies are suggested in terms of publishing data journals in the field of ecology, organizing and publishing journals, organizing journal editors, and receiving manuscripts.

Research fields are mainly invertebrate palaeontology, palaeobotany and palynology, micripalaeontology, and stratigraphy, which are being studied by the 223 researchers and graduate students (October, 2005). Since its foundation 50 years ago, the institute has published more than 6,200 research papers in national and international scientific journals, 300 volumes of scientific monographs in various fields. 200 scientific research projects have received awards from the state, Chinese Academy of Sciences, province and ministry level-government. Of them the "Project of the Chengjiang Biota and Cambrian Explosion" won the Frist class of National Natural Science Award from Ministry of Science and Technology in 2003.

Last review papers on Korean geomorphology and physical geography had been published in 1997 and 2000 respectively. A proposal to publish a book on Korean geomorphologists' achievement resulted in series of review papers in Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association. This article aims to summarize these papers and introduce their findings to foreign scholars. On remarkable achievement is a fierce debate on the effectiveness of traditional mountain concept to explain the shape of Korean peninsula, which made the public's understanding of geomorphology widen to the general public. Reflecting public demands, concerns for the effects of coastal facilities on coastal erosion and conservation mind and scientific researches for the coastal sand dunes have increased so much. Geomorphological hazards such as debris flow attracted many concerned scientists, and geotourism-related papers in scientific journals increased thanks to the designation of first geopark in Korea. Research papers submitted to the famous foreign academic journals are increasing in numbers these days.

Though the SNA (social network analysis ; SNA) has been used for various fields, esp. social science field, ig. politics, journalism, and science of public administration as well as natural science field, there are few studies about the introduction of analysis tools. In order to perform the SNA, collecting data which are fit for the purpose, statistical values deduction and visualized results made by analysis tool are necessary, but the studies, which explain them systematically, are not sufficient yet. So, in this study, we are intended to introduce the analytic process, from the data input to the interpretation, with proven data. using the R program, which is free, in order to help researchers who have any plan to study using the SNA. The proven data in this study are quoted ones in the domestic scientific journals of food, which are those supplied citation index DB of Korean scientific journals. As a study methodology, the SNA is a new paradigm to substitute existing research methods as well as a complement of statistical analysis. Therefore, this study would contribute to vitalization of the SNA.
